Of course, as with all scuttlebutt, the following is not 100% confirmed. This comes from a very trusted source and I’m going to standby my record of previous scuttlebutt that has turned out to be true. Ok, you ready?

The folks behind the highly successful restaurant/bar, Marvin, located on 14th Street just north of U, are planing to open up another spot. In Petworth!!! I wasn’t able to confirm the exact location but suffice it to say it will be near the metro (not in the Park Place building above the metro). But likely on Georgia Avenue.

Given that this is still in the scuttlebutt phase I don’t want to get too excited but I’ll say I’m super optimistic about the prospects. Now, I know some folks are going to say that it is too expensive. And believe me, I’m an aspiring full time blogger that will surely be eating a lot of ramen noodles when it opens but I still think this is a phenomenal addition to Petworth. If you told me a place like this would open up on Georgia Ave in Petworth 5 years ago, I would’ve looked at you like you were absolutely crazy. Now, it makes perfect sense to me. This is going to be a great sit down dining option and bar that will surely signal Georgia Ave’s return to greatness. Ok, great, now I’m crying. Tears of joy but still…

Update:  I can now say the location is 3815 Georgia Avenue, NW.

As mentioned on Saturday a taxi cab crashed through the front window of Solly’s located at 11th and U. 6 folks were hurt but fortunately none seriously. Credit to Solly’s for patching up the window the very next day and even having a bit of a sense of humor about it. Just to clear the record I spoke with Solly on Sunday and though DCist had reported that Solly was upstairs at the time of the accident he was actually in Kansas City and immediately flew back the next morning. A small silver lining from this ordeal is that Solly told me the new window they put in will open up onto the patio (previously the windows didn’t open). Once again, props to Solly’s for opening so quickly.

Red Derby (3718 14th St. NW) is having a brunch on Monday (MLK Day) and on inauguration day itself (Tuesday) they’ll be having an all day event where you can watch the inauguration and parade on the big screen. Plus they’ll be having a documentary film crew filming the scene so you’ll be immortalized!

It’s nearly gone. I think they’re still digging out the basement a bit. It’s wild to see this transformation.

For those that have missed some discussions on what the building will be you can read an old discussion here though be warned there are an insane amount of comments. And for those who forgot what it’s gonna look like here’s the artist rendition.

Sounds pretty sweet! Sadly, my head feels like it was stepped on by an elephant so I won’t be able to make it tonight. I do look forward to future Thursdays. If anyone goes tonight be sure to let us know how it goes. From a press release:

With the future of the Warehouse Theater and Cafe still up in the air, owners Paul & Molly Ruppert were looking for ways to enliven the space in the new year. So Paul and his partners in the coming-soon-but-still-under-construction Columbia Heights wine bar Room 11, have created a weekly event to help chase away the winter blues.

Room 11 partners Dan Searing, Nick Pimintel, and Ben Gilligan have hatched a weekly party to take place on Thursday nights at the Warehouse, starting on New Year’s Day, called Punch Club. Anchoring a tightly curated beverage selection will be classic and original punches. “I was fortunate to have the opportunity to fill in a few times at the short lived speakeasy Hummingbird to Mars earlier this year and anyone who drank there knows they served some delicious punch” relates Room 11 Bar Manager Searing “It would have been hard not to be inspired.”

Punches have continued to inspire patrons at such cutting edge cocktail sources as Central Michel Richard and Bourbon Adams Morgan. “Punch is really a precursor to the modern cocktail” continues Searing “so the resurgence of interest in a style of drink over three centuries old is a natural extension of the mania for classic cocktail culture that’s sweeping the globe right now.”

Joining the punches on the menu will be a small rotating selection of classic and original cocktails, wine and beer. Searing promises a first taste of some of the house-made ingredients, cocktails, and wine that will make their way to Room 11’s menu. “We intend to have fun mixing up the drinks and the selections,” he says.

Room 11 chef Ben Gilligan will also offer a rotating menu including bar snacks, cheese, charcuterie and sandwiches. Guests attending the Punch Club debut on New Year’s Day can anticipate noshing on one of Gilligan’s favorite hangover cures, grilled cheese sandwiches, with their Bloody Marys, Black Velvets and Corpse Revivers. The event’s regular hours will be from 6 pm to midnight every Thursday but to accommodate recovering bon vivants the debut will begin at 4 pm.

Reanimated New Year’s Eve revelers can leave their bow ties and cocktail frocks at home, however. The hosts promise an atmosphere both convivial and casual. “This is a club in the gentleman’s tradition minus the exclusivity—a retreat in which to enjoy fine food and drink apart from the cares of the world.” says Searing. Speaking of those cares, value will be a focus of Punch Club as well, with no cover charge and drinks ranging from $5 to $8 and bar snacks starting at $1.

Ed. Note: If like me you are too lazy/unskilled to make your own glogg Robyn has some options you can purchase around town. What’s your favorite hot winter drink?

I’m not a fan of summertime-themed drinks. I’d rather drink my vodka on ice rather than a sickly sweet pina-daiquiri-melon-ruby red- tini sprinkled with pomegranate seeds and adorned with a mini-umbrella. So I celebrate when winter rolls around. Not the biting cold, the frigid life-doubting AM walks to the metro under darkened skies, or the emergency Kleenex runs to the Columbia Heights CVS…I celebrate warm winter drinks. Depressing weather turns even the most sober of folks into seasonal boozers, and thankfully, DC has plenty of winterized warm drinks to accommodate.

Fado: While I’ve never fared well on their popular pub quizzes, I’m a pro at consuming Fado’s signature Irish Coffee. It’s simple solution for cold weather – no frills, no sugar-coated, caramelized trimmings. Just whiskey, coffee, and cream. Fado’s version includes Bushmills Irish Whiskey and brown sugar and cinnamon. It’s the perfect drink to sip slowly while you figure out “Which Pseudonym was used by the writer Hector Hugh Munro and is also the name for a Japanese drink?” Who comes up with these questions? I curse the inventor of the pub quiz.

Bourbon: You see them in masses. The sniffling, coughing, Robitussum-IVed sickly of DC crawl to Bourbon (both in Glover Park and Adams Morgan). But not because Bourbon has any sort of medical facility. What they do have is an alcoholic elixir that is designed to relieve a cold and mental anguish over being ill: the hot toddy. While I don’t like to throw around the term ‘mixologist,’ I do trust Bourbon with my booze. Their hot toddy, made with Evan Williams bourbon, honey, and lemon juice, is served piping hot from a sympathetic bartender with extra napkins to blow your nose into.

Old Europe: Even if you don’t have a cold, you can still enjoy the taste of cough syrup with a sip of Gluhwein, a mulled wine drink served by Old Europe restaurant in Glover Park. The German themed – and I mean THEMED – restaurant has all kinds of Deutschlander flags and trinkets on the walls, friendly servers to help you get through the menu (items include Bauernfrühstück, Zwiebelrostbraten, and Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte), and even a little old woman on a piano. They also have Gluhwein, which doesn’t taste entirely of grape cough syrup, but rather a warm, thicker, sweeter, red wine with spices. It’s an acquired taste,

Open City: If you think there’s no limit to caloric intake during the holidays (as I do), be sure to visit Open City in Woodley Park for their choice in hot drinks. Choose from the Snow Drift Tryst Coffee with Godiva White Chocolate and Mint, the Winter Break Rich Hot Chocolate with Navan Vanilla Flavor or the Almond Joyfulness Caramel Latte with Amaretto and Godiva Chocolate. I think I gained a pound just typing that. Each one is rich, tasty, guilt-ridden goodness.

I’ve been asked by a number of folks some options for new years. So I had Raz, Tina, Nichole as well as myself put a few together. If you have any recommendations please put them in the comments. Thanks.

Some people are going to hate me for writing about this but hell if it’s on Yelp then I figure I can share it with y’all as well. So 6 weeks ago a new Cocktail Lounge opened up at 2009 14th St NW right next to Marvin. There is no signage at all so just look for the buzzer or a gentleman standing out front. I’d have never of known about it if a friend of mine didn’t recommend it for drinks on Friday so I walked past it tonight. Lots of positive talk over at Yelp. Here are some samples:

“I let the cat out of the bag……
But I just had to share with my fellow Yelpers!

I just wanted to let you know that The Gibson has become more wonderful with time!

After many a night introducing my friends to a great cocktail and a place where we can hear each other and enjoy each others company everyone agrees hands down the best place in the city to hang out with friends and have a drink.”

“The protective metal grate on the only street facing window is permanently drawn, so there is no indication of the lounge from the street. The transformation wrought on the other side of the metal grate by the new owners simply astounds. Upon pressing the buzzer, a dapper and smiling gentlemen in a lovely tweed suit asks for the number in your party. If there is room to sit at the bar or a banquet, he escorts you inside and it’s time to begin. There’s a wide array of thoughtfully created cocktails to choose from; I opted for a whiskey and absinthe concoction. My friend ordered a wine. The bartender is extremely gracious and friendly.”

“I was tempted to write a less than 5-Star review, only because this place makes you leave after an hour and a half. It’s like getting kicked out of the Garden of Eden except the bouncer has a clipboard and not a flaming sword.”
