Early last year this building was supposed to become home to Mama Put “serving Asian & African inspired food, with an atmosphere for lounging and listening to DJ music or Live Bands”. Recently a new liquor license placard was posted for Hush Restaurant & Lounge saying:

“Tavern specializing in intercontinental food with seating capacity of 250 and total occupancy of 350. Summer garden with 100 seats. Entertainment Endorsement to include cover charge and dancing.”

And just a few storefronts south that proposed tavern with ping pong tables looks to be making progress in the former Ma Ma’s Southern Cuisine space:

Looks like the bar is getting framed out:

Back in August we learned that there were plans to bring back Crow Bar [closed in ’98 at 20th and K St, NW] to the former Ghana Cafe space on 14th Street just south of Rhode Island Ave in the former Ghana Cafe space. In following up on the progress, one of the partners now tells me that the deal fell through. Updates when we learn who next takes over the space.

A few weeks ago we heard some scuttlebutt that The Passenger would be moving to 9th Street/Blagden alley when they would close in January. We were close – it’s Columbia Room. Washington Post reported yesterday:

The Passenger and the Columbia Room are closing to the public on Jan. 1. The two trailblazing cocktail bars will then take different paths: Derek Brown is moving the Columbia Room a few blocks north to Blagden Alley, where it will occupy the space above chef Jeremiah Langhorne’s forthcoming restaurant, the Dabney. The Passenger, meanwhile, will go dark until Tom Brown, Derek’s brother, is able to find the perfect place for it in Shaw.

Updates on both as they get closer to opening.

From an email:

“For the rest of November until World Giving Day Tuesday December 2nd, Ivy & Coney will be doing a big charity push for The Washington Humane Society.

It’s really simple. Bring in either a blanket or pillow or give a minimum $10 using the #donate on our Twitter or Facebook Page, and as a thank you we will give you a Free Hot Dog & Beer! It’s one time per customer during the period so we encourage people to spread the word to others. We really want to raise as much money as possible or get as many blankets/pillows as possible for the animals.”

From an email:

“We’re excited to announce the opening of McClellan’s Retreat TODAY at 4pm. The former Veritas space on the corner of Florida Avenue & S Street NW has been transformed from wine bar to a cozy neighborhood watering hole complete with craft cocktails, a curated list of bourbons and ryes, beer and wine. A menu of bar snacks by Jan Van Haute, which includes finger food, spreads and charcuterie, complements the drink list. The full list of cocktails is available here.”

Duffy’s abruptly closing after eight years was a dagger to many. I think part of it was because it was so sudden but the other part was because “regular” non themed bars are seemingly such a rarity – so it is particularly painful to lose one of the early ones. And that too – Duffy went out on a limb and opened in a spot back in 2006 that was off the beaten path (at that time, hard to believe now). And finally the proprietor, Andy Duffy, was and is just a really nice guy. Anyway it got me thinking about bars that I would be crushed to learn of their sudden closure. Ed. Note: we’ll revisit restaurants some other time but for today let’s just focus on neighborhood bars that would be brutal to lose. I’m thinking, what in my mind I will call ‘regular’ non themed bars that are at least 5 years old. Following is my list of the best “regular” bars left in DC – this doesn’t mean that there aren’t other bars out there that I like or even love (All Souls, Boundary Stone, KBC, DC Reynolds, Meridian Pint) – these are just some of the older ones that I’d be shocked and saddened to lose:

13. Chads Friendship Heights (5247 Wisconsin Ave, NW)
12. Nanny O’Briens (3319 Connecticut Ave, NW)
11. Trusty’s (1420 Pennsylvania Ave, SE)
10. Murphy’s (2609 24th St, NW)
9. The Raven (3125 Mt Pleasant St, NW)
8. The Big Hunt (1345 Connecticut Ave, NW)
7. Wonderland (1101 Kenyon St, NW)
6. Capitol Lounge (229 Pennsylvania Ave, SE)
5. Looking Glass Lounge (3634 Georgia Ave, NW)
4. The Pug (1234 H St, NE)
3. Angles (2339 18th St, NW)
2. Red Derby (14th and Quincy St, NW)
1. Solly’s (llth and U St, NW)

Which ‘regular’ bar would you be most devastated to lose?

I started hearing rumors about Duffy’s abrupt closure around 4pm today and sadly have now confirmed from Duffy’s owner – Andy Duffy:

Duffy’s will be closing its doors tonight at midnight. We just could not make it out of the financial hole we got in the first several years we were open. I would like to thank all of you who have supported us over the years. I have met some truly wonderful people. I also would like to thank my staff, they are the best.

Tonight we open at 6pm and all drinks / beers will be $5. We will have free wings while they last. Come by and enjoy one last evening.
