Update 10am: No damage to Fado – opening today on time!

A reader reports just after 9:30am:

“Just walked by to see three fire trucks pull up and firemen running in with the hose. No visible smoke from outside.”

Update: A reader notes this could be the offices upstairs as Fado’s door is the left of this photo.

We’ve been waiting a long time to see what the heck is going on with the old cleaners at 14th and Colorado Ave, NW. Brightwood Bar and Restaurant out – Swampoodle in! Their Facebook page says:

“Hey ‪#‎DC‬! We are working hard to bring you an exciting new restaurant to the area! Follow along as we bring you updates from the ground up. ‪#‎new‬ ‪#‎localfood‬ ‪#‎comingsoon‬”

“We are eager for you to come join us at the bar for brunch! Delicious food and brunch cocktails await you.”

“On a bright and sunny DC day you and your family will love enjoying a meal on our outside patio!”

“Although it may not feel like it today, Spring is here and that means we are that much closer to opening our doors! We can’t wait for you to sit in our chairs and have a burger at Swampoodle DC!”

Nevermind that Swampoodle was an old neighborhood name nowhere near here (by Union Station today) – this sounds promising! Stay tuned.

cafe st ex bricks falling
14th and T Street, NW

From an email:

“On Saturday evening, March 21, 2015 around 5pm, a section of brick fell off of the upper facing of the building that houses Cafe Saint-Ex on 14th St NW. The cause of the incident is unknown, and thankfully no one was injured.

Representatives from DCRA were on site shortly after the event to inspect the area and removed any remaining loose bricks. They determined that the building is secure and cordoned off the corner of 14th & T Streets as a safety precaution. The restaurant reopened at 10pm that same night, using a side door along T Street as its entrance.

The building’s owner, Ron Renchard, is working with officials to erect scaffolding in front of the building for a full inspection.

The owners & staff of Cafe Saint-Ex take the safety of our guests very seriously and will continue to work closely with our landlord to ensure the building remains secure.”

@dcprintchick tweeted us Saturday around 4:30pm:

“@PoPville Huge chunk of brick @ top of St Ex bldg just crashed down. Giant noise; no injuries but beware sidewalk!”

@AbingdonSciGuy also tweeted us yesterday:

“@PoPville I saw (and heard) this earlier… The people below were very lucky.”

I stopped this morning and was told St. Ex has reopened but the front entrance obviously remains cordoned off so enter through the side.

What’s the word on the highly anticipated (by me anyway) wine bar coming to Georgia Ave? Well a reader hears they’re no longer coming. I’ve sent an email for confirmation but haven’t heard back yet. The fact that their Facebook page hasn’t been updated since March of last year is not a good sign either. Hoping I’m wrong.

Update: The owners say they are now shooting for a summer 2015 opening! Great news. Updates as they get closer.

Whoa – a reader passes on from DCRA:

“A transfer of ownership was approved to 520 Florida Avenue Restaurant LLC for Shaw’s Tavern’s license on Wednesday, March 11; however, the license has not yet been issued. Several outstanding documents still need to be provided to ABRA, including a certificate of occupancy, before the license can be issued to the new owner.”

The reader says the new ownership group are the same folks who own Front Page, located in Dupont at 1333 New Hampshire Ave, NW. Updates when more info is known.
