From a press release:

“As temperatures hit triple digits in DC, The Royal in LeDroit Park has introduced a new menu of boozy shaved ice cocktails to help Washingtonians beat the heat. Churned from the bar’s vintage Guatemalan ice shaver, four fruit-centric slushies refresh guests, taking creative inspiration from classics like the Negroni and sangria. And the restaurant’s new Executive Chef Anna Miller has revamped the morning and daytime menus for summer, introducing ceviches, grilled meats and other bright, seasonal fare.

Bar Manager Lee Carrell has concocted four unique shaved ice cocktails for summer (ranging from a reasonable $8-$11) such as the Arctic Sunrise with vodka, lychee, Cappelletti and lime; the Tiki-inspired Trade Winds with dark rum, pineapple, lime and cinnamon; the house Sangria made with wine, brandy, fruit and spices. He’s also offering a Negronicello on special, a citrusy spin on the classic Negroni with Campari, Dolin Dry Vermouth and limoncello ($8). These will be available through summer. Classic cocktails are also available on shaved ice by request. (more…)

argonaut
1433 H Street, NE

This could be a terrible dagger for H Street if permanent:

“Dear PoPville,

Thought you’d be interested in news from H Street that the Argonaut was closed and padlocked with a no trespassing sign last night (Sunday). No official word, but the manager Shaaren’s latest tweet suggests it could be bad.”

dacha
7th and Q Street, NW

Update from Dacha:

“We are required to apply for change of hours for the license, but that does not mean the hours for the outside component of our operations will change.

The indoor component, which had no hours of operations previously, gets customary hours that we agreed upon in the last neighborhood agreement. The outdoor component – sidewalk cafe – will have exactly the same hours as it has now. This will be stipulated in the license when it is issued. It would be impractical (if not impossible) for us to apply for change of hours for the outdoor component because that would violate our agreement with the neighborhood.”

From a liquor license application change for Dacha Beer Garden:

“Applicant requests a Change of Hours of operation and alcoholic beverage sales and consumption.

CURRENT HOURS OF OPERATION
Sunday through Thursday 7:00 am- 10:30 pm, Friday and Saturday 7:00 am –11:59 pm

exiles
1610 U Street, NW

From a press release:

“First time owner/operators Donagh Gilhooly, Brian Hillery and Danny Price opened Exiles Bar, a neighborhood restaurant located at 1610 U St., NW, formerly Stetsons Famous Bar & Grill. The trio has worked at various locations throughout the metro-area since 2006, most recently at a pub in Arlington, Virginia.

Joining them is Chef Emer O’Rourke, the accomplished head chef of Northside Social in Arlington since 2010. Chef O’Rourke, whose award-winning style is straightforward in approach, offers modern touches on traditional comfort foods. Steven Fedorchak, owner of the Liberty Tavern Group, is also involved with the project as a consulting partner and advisor.

After a massive renovation, including construction of a new kitchen, second-floor bar/restaurant area, the addition of a billiards room and five brand new bathrooms, Exiles Bar is excited and honored to join the U Street Corridor. Much of the building has been stripped back to its original brick and stone. New windows and lighting provide warmth and clarity to this historic building, which has operated as a restaurant continuously since the 1930s.

Join Exiles Bar for its grand opening celebration on July 21, 2016, at 7:00 PM. The evening will feature live music, complimentary menu samples, and drink specials.

Exiles Bar will be open Monday-Thursday, 4pm-2am, Friday & Saturday, 11am-3am, and Sunday, 11am-2am. The new upstairs bar/restaurant area seats 45 and is available for private events.”

Way back in 2013 we heard some scuttlebutt that the owners of Federal and Palace5ive (2216 14th St, NW) would be opening a neighborhood tavern in the former Dynasty Ethiopian Restaurant space but there seemed to be very little progress since then.  No more – finally serious action has returned.  Stay tuned for more details as they get closer to opening.
