New Liquor License Placard Posted at Rice in Logan Circle – New Bar Coming Downstairs?

Now this is a curious one. Rice, which by the by is a phenomenal restaurant of the old(ish) school (anyone know what year they opened?), has posted a new liquor license for a Rice Market:

“New Class “B” retail store selling beer and wine for off – premise consumption.”

When I stopped by to talk to an employee on site he said, he thought a new bar (from the owners of Rice) was coming to the basement space downstairs. Sounds similar to Sotto at Ghibillena next door. So either, a new retail store is coming downstairs which is possible but odd, or a new bar is coming downstairs. Either way, Rice is awesome and deserves your love. See their menu here.

Some days the Gods are angry with you and some days the Gods smile upon you. I just got a big old smile walking around downtown. I noticed some construction going on next to Joe’s Seafood and spotted Tony Tomelden from The Pug (1234 H St, NE) walking out (who’ve I’ve known for ages so he couldn’t hide.) First of all holy crap – I knew he was looking to open something new but I had no idea it would be downtown.

Which if you think about it, is freaking brilliant. How sweet to have a – The Pug downtown. But of course it won’t be a replica of The Pug (no disrespect to 1234 H Street but this is uh, let’s say, quite a different space) and what’s even better is that he’s opening it up with his Brookland’s Finest co-owner John Solomon (also owner of Solly’s at 11th and U St, NW.) But unlike Brookland’s Finest (12th and Jackson Street, NE) there will be no food component here – this is gonna be a straight up bar. A proper bar. Oh and the name of that bar will be Union Trust, in homage to the Union Trust Building. If all goes well they hope to open this fall so STAY TUNED.

Thanks to Grant for sending an update on the former Vendetta space (previously Palace of Wonders/Red & the Black):

“I hear it is now a coffeeshop pastry joint named Kyss Kyss. There was a golden pineapple on one of the tables…”

Frozen Tropics posted a sign last week announcing their grand opening. The sign said “Free Cupcake when you buy a drink.”

Well, good news for drinkers with a sweet tooth…

Wonderland Killing It for 13 Years!!?! Celebrate August 6th

None of us at the bar understand how it is that city officials and humanity’s collective conscience have allowed us to remain open this long, but such are the mysteries of life, and we’re celebrating!

We’ll be running happy hour ALL DAY after brunch, and polite society is invited to come pay respects starting at 4:00 PM. Things get somewhat coarser starting around 7:00, and the earnest descent into something out of Dante begins around 8:00. Please plan accordingly. “Dacha Reveals New 14th St. Venue Design, Seeks Community Support”

“Today, the owners of Dacha Beer Garden announced a major revision in plans for a second bar and restaurant venue to be located at the southwest corner of 14th and S streets in northwest D.C. The venue is planned for one of the few remaining undeveloped parcels along the bustling commercial corridor recognized as among the city’s most vibrant areas.

The updated building design was posted online today by Dacha proprietors Ilya Alter and Dmitri Chekaldin in their months-long effort seeking approval of a pending liquor license application. The D.C. Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) Board will consider the proposal in the coming weeks. A prominent component of the new design is a significantly expanded enclosed interior space. Nearly two-thirds of the total occupancy is now enclosed in response to concerns about noise. (more…)
