Yesterday we were stunned by the seemingly sudden closures of L’Enfant Cafe, Irish Whiskey and the 1st floor of Policy. The jaw dropping continues today.

Rachel reports:

“RFD closes suddenly as well. None of the staff seems to have been notified in advance.”

“After 15 years, 4.9 MILLION BEERS, & 30k Brick Burgers, @RFDLoveTheBeer & the Brickskeller family are closing our doors. Cheers & God Bless.”

1207 19th Street, NW. Some still recovering from Porter’s abrupt closure in 2010.

Elayne reports last night:

“Breaking DC Irish bar news. 🍀->🌷”

I’m guessing we’ll see a decent amount of f/rosé.

Irish Whiskey’s Facebook page says:

“We would like to thank all of our loyal patrons for five years of wonderful support. We have decided it is time to close our doors and change direction. Please stay tuned as we give the venue a face lift and concept change.

Stay tuned.

1315 14th Street, NW at N Street

Woah this is a huge one. For those keeping score I give this scuttlebutt a 98% accuracy rating. So long story short – the space below the coming Hando-Medo sushi spot is slated to be a basement bar according to a Douglas Development Flyer. The legendary Reef, one of D.C.’s first to focus on craft beer, closed in Adams Morgan back in August 2013 gutting many. Well, I’m hearing the former owner, Brian Harrison, is gonna be bringing this new spot to Logan Circle. Stay tuned for many more details. Baruch Ha’shem.

“Dear PoPville,

The $2 to-go fee post reminded me of the following story that I wanted to forget… but here it goes…

The obvious benefit of living off U Street allows for a unique opportunity to explore an abundance of new places/new dishes.

Sadly, a while back I got to experience a new way of being charged. :-/

Have you ever heard of a $1 surcharge for being served a drink “Neat?”

Three drinks we ordered and three times were charged a buck!

So I asked as to why and the waitress who was lovely and did a fine job told me that she would ask her manager.

There were a few of us at the table and we decided that we’ll pay the $3, if only to find out a logical answer.

We were curious and there must be one, right?

Our waitress returned and to our collective chagrin, there wasn’t.

And so our embarrassed waitress explained…

Because of the lack of ice to our order, the bartender supposedly added some extra booze to each drink.

Hmmmm, okay…

What if we ordered our Macallan on the rocks then? (A cardinal sin in my book, but for the sake of argument)…

Well, because of the addition of ice, the bartender actually adds even more alcohol to his drink order, thus our surcharge would have been $1.50 per each beverage.

“Oh. [beat]. Okay. Thank you. Happy to pay… Have a good night… It’s cool, really… Thanks for asking on our behalf.”

iPhones were out 10 seconds later to snap an image of our receipt — which I now pass on to you. (more…)

2009 8th Street, NW (off Florida Ave) courtesy Town

Whoa. Thanks to everyone who messaged me about the big Town news:

Ed. Note: Recently three gay bars have opened nearby – Trade (below Black Whiskey), Dirty Goose on U Street, and Uproar on Florida Ave. (Not to mention Nellie’s.) But this is gonna be a tough one to digest for many.

5th and F Street, NW

From a press release:

“Hill Country Barbecue Market is excited to revive the Backyard Barbecue, a summer pop-up at the National Building Museum (5th & F St) on Thursday, July 6. After a brief hiatus last summer, the Backyard Barbecue returns to the West Lawn for the third summer season, making it the place to chow down on authentic central Texas-style barbecue, imbibe and enjoy live music. 1909 K Street, NW

Thanks to all who emailed. Amanda reports:

“It appears that the 19th street wave of closures has spilled over to K st. Cities (formally LOOK, the rumored Icelandic restaurant) has closed. Cities was located on K st NW in between 19th and 20th st.”

Cities’ website is still active so we’ll see if this is a refresh or if a new restaurant is coming. Since their phone number is disconnected and they haven’t tweeted since March 14th I’d guess that latter. Stay tuned.
