From a press release:

“Washington, DC-based founders Lisa Gerben and Melissa Gerben announce the launch of RAKO Coffee Roasters, a specialty coffee collective focused on sustainably sourced single origin coffees, environmentally friendly roasting practices, and advanced brewing methods.  While RAKO’s summer plans to open two cafes in the District were delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the brand launched a new online store featuring freshly roasted specialty coffee from Sumatra, Guatemala, Burundi and Ethiopia, available via free shipping in the DMV. The complimentary delivery service started April 6th and will continue indefinitely, with custom brew guides available for consumers to make the best possible coffee at home. (more…)

Sarah asks: “I thought I saw a post a while ago about Starbucks having walk up windows somewhere in dc. Is that the case? Can’t find it anywhere now.”

We has a long coffee talk on March 17th but that as we know, was a lifetime ago. So what do you guys do for coffee these days? Anyone going out to pick up a cup? If so where? If brewing at home, what are you brewing up? And where do you get it from? Grocery store? Retail shop? Delivered?

Thanks to Dennis for sending. To be honest I still haven’t figured out how to cover non coronavirus stuff. At first I was thinking humor, like that’s gonna be a lot of hand sanitizer. But then I remember all the folks who used to work there who are now out of work and it seemed flat. So I don’t really know what to say except I hope this is a sign of resilience. (more…)

Thanks to all who sent the sad word. Many who reached out to me are upset about the way the news was delivered: “Compass Coffee, a DC based company just laid off 180 of their 200 employees abruptly with no compensation or support. Here’s the insufficient letter from the owner. It was heartbreaking for employees having worked there for years.”

Sadly similar lay offs have and will continue to occur throughout the industry. Please see the virtual tip jar for service industry workers. Hopefully baristas can be included too. And hopefully the District Council will provide support to the workers laid off as well. (more…)

Thanks to Kari for sending: “I live down the street from Nina May and have seen my fair share of restaurants open and close (I am looking at you “The Bird ” and “Frenchy’s Naturel“) any way, looks like Nina May is now open for coffee, breakfast and lunch and I really want them to succeed. It is a tough corner with not too much foot traffic.”

From a press release:

“After a successful launch in the Fall, Shaw’s New American restaurant Nina May has introduced a daytime café within the restaurant. Open Monday – Friday, from 7 am – 2 pm, the café’s menu reflects the team’s continued dedication to locally sourced and sustainable food ingredients. (more…)

I’ll be curious to learn more about this space. The liquor license application for 9 Bars Street Art Café says:

“A new C Tavern. Seating Capacity of 40. Total Occupancy Load of 47. License will include an Entertainment Endorsement.”

Update: Thanks to Chad for passing on their website:

“We are DCs first street art cafe
An espresso bar with a sublime cup of coffee,
a waffle that you cant get anywhere else,
wrapped in a culture decades in the making”

We are thrilled you’ve found us! 9 Bars Street Art Cafe is the first of it’s kind in DC, an espresso bar serving the best daggone waffles you’ve ever tasted, owned and operated by a local street artist. We specialize in a sublime cortado paired with a delectable treat, a made to order waffle that you can’t find anywhere else. We will be displaying artworks from local artists, hosting exhibitions, and are available to add flavor to your next event as a kiosk.”

STAY TUNED.

14th and Irving St, NW on Irving Street.

A long history of “temporary closures” here.

Thanks to Amanda for sending:

“Pidzza in the DCUSA building in Columbia Heights was “closed for renovations,” but from the new help wanted sign, it looks like it is turning into The Ritual Cafe. Hopefully this business breaks the curse because there has been a lot of turnover in this little spot.” (more…)
