“Beginning Monday, September 24, the National Park Service will start work to improve the bicycle and pedestrian trail that connects the north end of the 14th Street Bridge with East Basin Drive near the Thomas Jefferson Memorial. The project will widen and improve the trail surface, correct a dangerous slope along the path and improve the crosswalks and crosswalk markings across East Basin Drive. At the same time, a two-way cycle track will be installed in one lane of East Basin Drive where it passes the Jefferson Memorial, providing a dedicated and protected route for cyclists. (more…)

“The City Stole my Bicycle — Update”

“Dear PoPville,

I got my bike back. The city (DPW) messed up and it appears they mistook it for an abandoned bike. A reader mentioned in the comments section that a similar bike to mine that does indeed look abandoned was on the same block where mine was locked up. I also lucked out (sort of) in that I had a witness who saw the city take it. Otherwise I would’ve had nothing to go on and would’ve assumed it was a typical bike theft. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Our family’s beloved Taga 2.0 bicycle that was used to transport our 2 year old twins was stolen from our garage in LeDroit Park/Bloomingdale over the weekend. We used this bike as our primary source of transportation for our family and we’re bummed that it’s gone now. It’s quite distinctive and there aren’t too many of these in DC. It is also irreplaceable since the company went out of business. We would love the community’s help to be on the lookout for it. For reference it has one blue and one orange seat and a rain cover over the seats as well. Contact [email protected] with any sightings. Thanks for the help!”

“Dear PoPville,

I was at the WSC gym this morning on lower Connecticut (1211 Conn) between 9-10am. When I left, my bicycle was gone. It was locked up to an actual bike rack with a heavy-duty U lock. Here’s where it gets interesting– Both the guy at the gym desk and the manager of Buredo next door saw a DC truck (one of the utility trucks with a butane tank in the bed) pull up to the curb, a crew jump out, cut the lock with a torch and take it. All this happened within the time span of a minute. And they only took my bike; there were others they didn’t take. Again, locked up to an actual bike rack. The truck had DC insignia on the side and the crew were in high-vis vests. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I was in a bike accident last Tuesday (August 7) around 6pm at 14th St NW and Monroe in Columbia Heights. I was cut off by a car, breaked really hard, my bike skid, and I took a pretty bad fall that ended with a bloody forehead, a bum knee, and an evening in the ER. I’m writing in because I finally got around to picking up the police report to realize that the officer did not collect information from the driver of the car and simply stated I fell of my bike, potentially “due to congestion on the road”. Ground Broken on Fort Totten Extension of the Metropolitan Branch Trail (MBT)

“Mayor Bowser today broke ground on the Fort Totten extension of the Metropolitan Branch Trail (MBT), which will connect the existing trail from John McCormack Drive in Brookland to the Fort Totten Metro Station. This is the next major milestone toward the completion of the Metropolitan Branch Trail.

“This extension is a tremendous example of how we are working together as a community to build a safer, stronger DC for pedestrians and cyclists,” said Mayor Bowser. “With this project, we’re closing key gaps in our network and providing a safe, off-street route for people traveling through the District.”
