From a press release:

“Events DC, the official convention and sports authority for the District of Columbia, presented initial concepts for exterior streetscape plans at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center to the community on Thursday evening. The concepts will reactivate the exterior perimeter of the 2.3 million square foot Convention Center and better connect the building to the surrounding Shaw neighborhood. The Project Team is led by Design Architect OMA, working together with BBB (Executive Architect), OLIN (Landscape Architect) and Dharam (Cost Consultant).

Ed. Note: Is GCDC (Grilled Cheese) coming to the Convention Center?!?!

The streetscape plans will transform the façade of the Convention Center through lighting, signage, canopies and furniture, as well as activate and enrich the sidewalks and enhance the exterior streetscape along 9th, N and 7th Street. Not only will the proposed plans provide added value to Convention Center clients and their attendees, but the project will create a greater sense of place for the revitalized Shaw community. The jealousy I feel whenever I pass this deck is excruciating. I mean, I’m happy for the owners and all but there’s just so much envy. Then I feel bad about coveting it. Anyway, beautiful beautiful deck.

“Dear PoPville,

I thought your readers might find the BZA submission for the Ward 5 family homeless shelter to be of interest. They are requesting multiple zoning exceptions including height, loading zone, and parking. Not sure where the other shelters’ plans are in their process, but if the board approves this, it could set the tone for zoning leniency with the other shelters’ plans. Needless to say, several neighbors are very unhappy with the exceptions. Can’t we build a shelter that contributes to the character of a neighborhood instead of being a monstrous eyesore?”

From a press release:

“The American Geophysical Union (AGU) today announced formal approval from its Board of Directors to undertake a $41.7 million complete renovation of its 62,000-square-foot headquarters building, located in the Dupont Circle neighborhood. AGU is aspiring to be the first organization in the District of Columbia to renovate an existing commercial building to achieve net zero goals.

AGU is an organization dedicated to advancing science and ensuring a sustainable future. Recognizing that the aging building and infrastructure would require a major renovation after 20 years of service, AGU seized upon an opportunity to lead by example. In addition to creating a welcoming and collaborative space for its members and the D.C. community that would facilitate the understanding of Earth and space science, the organization chose to design and engineer the modernization of the building to meet net zero goals. In so doing, AGU will be able to showcase real-world scientific advancement through innovative sustainable technology. The project is expected to be a model for reducing the carbon and environmental impacts of business operations in a cost-effective and replicable way. (more…)
