Another sick one from Logan Circle. And check out the stained glass up top.  You think they still sell these at home depot?

Pretty dope all around but you have to respect that they still have a window unit. Lately I’ve been feeling a real solidarity with those who don’t have central a/c…

Thanks to a reader for telling me about this work going on outside of Mama Ayesha’s. It looks like it is going to be phenomenal. I’ll be back when it’s fully completed. But consider this a sneak peek of sorts.

I don’t know how I missed this awesome article in the Times Magazine last week about a guerrilla gardening movement. Did anyone read it?

The article starts:

“Just after sunset on one of the first mild nights of spring, Richard Reynolds parked his hatchback near a traffic circle in the London neighborhood of Hoxton. Tied to his roof were a potted honeysuckle and a dozen box hedge plants, spilling out of garbage bags. Trays of bright white Paris daisies filled the trunk, and cartons of variegated ivy were wedged in the passenger seat. Hipsters drank indifferently outside a nearby pub.

The car was swiftly unstuffed. Soon Reynolds and five accomplices were over a short black fence and onto a small, squalid crescent of land at a bend in the sidewalk. They were ankle-deep in food wrappers and beer bottles and the spindly overgrowth of a bullying bush that Reynolds — bent over, wearing work gloves and high black rubber boots — started clipping fervidly.”

How awesome is the idea of guerrilla gardening? Too cool. Think it would be a good idea for DC?

I really enjoyed our discussion last week about whether Dukem was the best Ethiopian restaurant in the city. So I was alerted to a new mural going up at Mama Ayesha’s (will post later in the afternoon) and it got me thinking what is the best Middle Eastern sit down restaurant in DC? Mama Ayesha’s? Lebanese Taverna?

Located at 1534 U Street, Sweet Magnolia is not exactly the most hidden of neighborhood finds but it’s the first time I ever dropped in. It has been open for three years and bills itself as ‘Fine Gifts’ and ‘Home Accessories’. This store is absolutely jam packed. Like GoMamaGo, it too is very eclectic. It has posters, candles, baby clothes, candles, pictures, home decor items etc. It’s almost hard to walk around the place is so packed. I’d say this is another good spot to check out if you need to pick up a gift for someone. If you are looking for a gift for me, I’ll take the Bob Dylan poster please. Bob Dylan poster and other photos of the interior after the jump. (more…)

Dear PoP,

I have lived in Petworth for one week. So far, so good, and lots of what we read about the area from your blog, we are experiencing (friendly people, etc). However, in one week’s time, I have TWICE seen the same man (different days) walking around different areas of Petworth barely holding his pants up (meaning, holding them up just past his knee – full front and back nudity!!). This I was not expecting J. Does anyone ever call the police on this guy? It is very disturbing – there were children around the first time!

Disturbed

Dear Disturbed,

Welcome to the neighborhood. No, seriously, I didn’t mean that sarcastically. Sounds like quite an exciting first week. I’m happy to report that I don’t think this is a regular occurrence. I’ve lived in the neighborhood over five years and I’ve never encountered something like this. I think I can say without hesitation – yes call the police next time. However, I’d also ask a neighbor who’s been around a while and see if this is just a regular crazy character or if it is a new development. Not that a regular crazy character would make it more pleasant but at least you’d know he was harmless. I wonder, did he seem drunk or on drugs or mentally ill? If it’s possible to identify it might be easier to get him help. I’m afraid that even calling the police would be a temporary solution so it’d be nice if someone could get this guy some serious help. But honestly, like I said earlier, try and talk to some of your long time neighbors they may very well know about this guy or at the very least could offer some better advice than I.

Welcome to the neighborhood though. I promise you that’s not a common sight.

Cheers,
PoP

Has anyone else encountered the pantsless wonder? If so what did you do?

Ok, I’m changing the rules. You don’t have to write what you think I was thinking when I took the photo. I’ll simplify – funniest caption wins. Free PoP t-shirt if you don’t have one or a pint of beer if you do. I’ll pick the winner Friday.

One of the owners, Mike Wilkinson, tells me that Pete’s “is introducing a Happy Hour from 3:30 to 6:30, seven days a week. Slice of cheese or pepperoni pizza and a pint of beer for $5.” Holy cow that is awesome. Although it seems like people are just trying to torture me knowing that I work until 6pm. Ah, but it’s seven days a week, so you now know where you can catch me on Sundays. For those who haven’t been there yet Pete’s is located right above the Columbia Heights metro on the western exit.
