Previously a reader had asked if I had ever posted this building. Gosh, I’m so drunk tired, I can’t even remember the name of this building just north of the zoo on Connecticut Ave. Lord, I’m getting old. Anyway, after the jump see if you can distinguish which is the new wing and which is the old wing. Does anyone know why there was only one wing built for so long? Ed. note:  There is a possibility I’m so drunk tired I may not have posted the original wing…looks pretty good though, yeah?  Wings after the jump. (more…)

This Sunday, September 14, is the 30th Annual Adams Morgan Day Festival.

As always, the festival is centered on 18th Street, with live music stages at the intersections of 18th and Columbia Road and at Florida Avenue. The stages will feature Latin rock, salsa, jazz, soul, funk and American rock.

The opening acts begin around 11:15 am and the music goes until after 6:00 pm.

The festival is billed as the longest continuously running neighborhood Festival in DC and attracts around 25,000 people to the day-long event.

Official Highlights (Adapted from the excellent Adams Morgan Day website)

Dance Plaza – Located on the grounds of the Marie Reed Community Center, the Plaza also features Afro-Samba Reggae, Bolivian Folk dance, Cuban Salsa , Afro-Brazilian Capoeiras and Ghana Tribal Dancers

Jazz Oasis in the Park – Was a new venue in 2007 and is located in Kalorama Park. The Jazz Oasis is aimed at residents with children who may want a quieter, more contained area and features a few vendors in addition to the jazz.

Arts on Belmont – A huge range of glassware and metalwork, paintings, jewelry, sculpture & photography for sale on beautiful Belmont Street.

The Cultural Stage (located at Columbia Road and Euclid Street) also boasts a variety of acts, including poetry, theater, dance and music, even the Sitar Arts Center of Adams Morgan.

Kids’ Fair – Located off of 18th St. at the field of Marie Reed School. Families can sit on bleachers set into the hill near the tennis courts for a day of family entertainment, including a moon bounce, puppet show, face-painting, magicians and more.

Unofficial Highlights

The Peyote Café Karaoke – Experience the wonders of karaoke without actually having to hang out in a karaoke bar. The Peyote karaoke team brings the action to the streets allowing you to massacre your favorite tune in front of an adoring audience.

Meat-on-a-Stick – Just as people rarely eat Jumbo Slice pizza sober, has anyone ever eaten one of those teriyaki chicken-on-a-sticks other than at a neighborhood street festival? Corn dogs are also available.

The WeatherWithout trying to jinx the entire festival, Adams Morgan Day has historically been blessed with superb weather. Forecasts are calling for 89 degrees and sunny skies on Sunday so hopefully this tradition will continue. Future fairs throughout the city after the jump. (more…)

More details and photos can be found here.

This is a wild house because they are calling the third bedroom the basement. It didn’t seem like a proper bedroom to me. While there was a nice bedroom in the basement it seemed more like a communal living space to me. So at this location do you think $724,900 is a good deal?

Nichole Didn’t Venture Far From Home This Week: Lincoln Park

“I had this really great post in my head, where I’d spend the week wandering the Hill’s Places and Alleys, taking pictures of all the tiny houses and carriage houses and I was pretty excited to do get out and share some of my neighborhood’s quirkiness with all of you. And then a woman was sexually assaulted in the middle of the day a block from my house, during the course of which, the suspect tried to pull her into an alley. So, I decided to stay the hell out of the Alleys and Places for the time being. Instead, I’ll share with you a little bit about Lincoln Park.

I am very lucky to have this historic park a block from my house. Not only does it have an interesting history, it’s also a great neighborhood gathering place and is the largest park on Capitol Hill.

The spot was intended by L’Enfant to be the point from which all distances in North America were measured, and situated exactly one mile due East of the Capitol Building. But, for years after it was built, it was used as a dumping ground, and during the Civil War, it was the site of Lincoln Hospital ( after the President). In 1867, Congress proclaimed the Park the first site to bear Lincoln’s name. The park is home to Freedmen’s Memorial Monument to Abraham Lincoln AKA the Emancipation Memorial AKA the (Original) Lincoln Memorial. The funds for the Memorial were collected entirely from freed slaves and the base of the statue was paid for with an appropriation from Congress. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that there are some who believe the statue to perpetuate racist ideals, because of the positioning of the figures. Story continues after the jump. (more…)

I’m very interested in this question which comes from a reader:

“Can you give us an update on the street car initiative for Georgia Avenue? Even though there are two metros in close proximity, even on this very site have been complaining that the metros are too far away. So it’d be really great for the people and businesses of Georgia Avenue, columbia Heights, Parkview and/or Pleasant Plains to get some more public transpo options. Can you let us know how we can mobilize and push this through?”

On a related transit note a reader also writes:

Greater Greater Washington writes about an express circulator-type bus line that would center in Columbia Heights, branching west to its next stop in Adams Morgan, then again in Woodley Park, and branching south bound down 14th street, stopping at U St, then at Logan Circle, then finally at McPhearson Square. Jim Graham brought it up in a meeting last night for discussion.”

So does anyone know the status of the street car initiative? If a street were to come to Georgia Ave, would you be likely to use it or would you stick with metro/buses?

Oddly this was found in the window of a locksmith on Columbia Road. Right on, right on.

I ran into a friend walking around last weekend (on 16th Street) and she said she imagined this building on PoP. It is pretty cool. But my favorite detail is after the jump. (more…)
