I was amazed to see so many new buildings on the 400 block of N Street, NW. What do you think of ’em? In the photo above do you prefer the one on the left or right – or neither?

A half block away you’ll find these:

Thumbs up or down?

It is quite a contrast to the buildings across the street. The building across the street take up a whole square block and seem to have come straight out of the late 60s or early 70s.

Wild contrast from the more modern ones being built, yeah?

Like many others I thought Casino Royale was phenomenal. So I am sad to say I was a bit disappointed in the Quantum of Solace. I didn’t find the story terribly compelling and some of the crazy camera angles during action scenes just made me dizzy. It was still good and certainly worth renting but I don’t necessarily think it’s worth seeing in theater. What did you guys think of the film?

This condo is located at 1457 Park Road, NW.

The flier says:

“LOCATION!!!!!This is a good opportunity to invest in DC, One and a half blocks from Columbia Heights metro station, DC USA Mall is on the corner, Stores: like Target, Best Buy, Banks, Tivoli Square, Restorants and many more. Building is under Capital improvements throughout common areas.”

You can find more info but no photos here.

There are actually two units going for the same price in this building #204 and #509. Both are studio apartments and both have been reduced $10k. Do you think $159,900 is a reasonable price?

Hi PoP,
I have an emergency question of the day: Do you know (or have you heard of) a good place to get authentic tamales in the Petworth/Columbia Heights/U St. area? I’m from Texas and they are traditional Chirstmas fare….and I’d love to serve them at a party I am having this weekend (I have a procrastination problem!) Mexican-style is my preference (masa filled with pork and wraped in a corn husk), but I know there are tons of declicious Latin American establishments in the area, so I wouldn’t be adverse to branching out.

Any suggestions are much appreciated!

Check Tina’s post on Pupuseria San Miguel. I’d also check with Taqueria Distrito Federal with locations in Columbia Heights on 14th Street and in Petworth on Kennedy Street.

Surely Odentex will have a few suggestions? Where do you guys get your tamales?

Well, we are all aware the economy is fracked. So what are you doing to cut back? Here are some suggestions from Raz.

In these times of the bad economy and economic distress, there are small things you can to do sock away your cash and stop spending so much.

Eating three square meals a day can be a black hole of spending, especially if you go out for all your meals. I am a believer in cooking for myself. It is cheaper, healthier and fresher. In the past five years, I have developed a science of sorts to buy the right amount of groceries and doing my cooking in bulk to make all of my meals for the week.

Here are some of my tips and tricks.

1. Make your own coffee in the morning. Brewing a fresh cup of coffee takes less than five minutes. I know everyone is busy and usually rushing to work, but taking another few minutes won’t make you late, and will save you hundreds of dollars a year, depending on what coffee you drink you prefer.

2. Make yourself a hearty breakfast that will hold you over until lunch. I am a big fan of oatmeal and egg sandwiches. For the oatmeal. I buy the huge silo of grains that is $2, and I add cranberries and pecans that I bought at Costco, along with Splenda, cinnamon and brown sugar. I think it’s delicious, and each bowl maybe costs me $0.50, if that. For the egg sandwich, I cook Egg Beaters in the microwave in a bowl. Sometimes I sprinkle some Feta cheese in it. I then put it on an English muffin. Lately I have been nixing the Feta and putting a bit of Avocado and Laughing Cow spreadable cheese on my English muffin. Again, maybe this sandwich costs me $1, if that. Buying a similar sandwich would probably be $3-$5, and that difference adds up over time. Continues after the jump. (more…)

Thanks to a reader for sending the photos. He’d also like to know if anyone has heard any updates?

Sadly in more crime news check a terrifying email from Council Member Jim Graham about an Adams Morgan/Columbia Heights shooting after the jump. (more…)

“So, PoP, what do you do when you see one of DC’s finest throw his trash out of his squad-car window?”

Yikes, I would be very angry. Obviously unacceptable, especially from one who should be leading by example. I suppose if the car was moving you wouldn’t be able to approach the officer to voice your dismay. Hmm. I may be crazy but if it were me and the car was stopped I would go talk to the officer in a very respectful manner explaining why I was upset. If that wasn’t possible, I guess I would take down their license plate or squad car number and then contact my Council member. You can also email me the information and I’d be happy to pursue the matter. I think cops happen to have a really difficult job but this behavior is unacceptable. I’m sorry to hear about this – that is for sure. What would you guys do in this situation?

Has anyone ever actually ordered food from a restaurant that has left a menu in your door? I’m seriously curious.

This spot just opened up a couple of months ago at 3413 Georgia Ave. NW. It’s seems like the type of place where you will get some seriously legit kabobs. I mean it is called The House of Kabob and all…

If anyone’s checked it out let me know what you thought of the food.
