You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every Monday and Friday. So anything good happen to you this weekend?

On Saturday I went to Anacostia (about 10 minute walk from the Anacostia metro) to take a tour of St. Elizabeth’s campus sponsored by the DC Preservation League. As many know, St. Elizabeth’s is slated to become the new DHS headquarters so it’s not clear how long these tours will be available. I believe the next one is scheduled for May but you can check the DC Preservation League’s calendar here.

The campus itself is huge. There are lots of cool buildings similar to the one above all with red boarded windows. We had two very knowledgeable guides but I most enjoyed wandering the grounds. You can read about the history of St. Elizabeth’s here. For those that follow this issue, are there any supporters of turning this property into DHS headquarters or do you think it should be used for something else?

Lots of photos after the jump. (more…)

Back in February we learned that the restaurant, Royal Blue, would not be coming to 3113 14th Street across the street from the DC USA mall.

Well, Chipotle has signed a letter of intent to take over the spot and details are being worked out with the lease. I’m not sure when they’ll be able to open but hopefully in a few months. I think this is great news. I seem to recall there are lots of Chipotle fans out there. I know the Chipotle in Woodley Park always seems to be crowded. So what do you guys think – do you like the addition of Chipotle to Columbia Heights? Man, I can’t hide it, I’m pretty psyched!

UPDATE: This location will be serving beer.

The winner with 39% of the vote is Petworth! Columbia Heights came in second with 27% of the vote and Mt. Pleasant squeaked by Park View for third place with 7% of the vote. I suggest we do the first cleaning from Grant Circle to the Petworth Metro (however, if large numbers turn out we can split up and send folks in other directions as well). To allow for planning purposes we’ll do the first cleaning Sat. April 25th. Please allow 2 hours for the cleanup – say 10am -12pm?

May’s cleanup will be in Columbia Heights and June’s will be in Mt. Pleasant. We will then re-vote to see where we’ll hit in July. So for those that volunteered to help with logistics – thanks! I’ll post a few reminders as the date approaches. Thanks to all who voted and hope lots of folks will be able to participate.

“Dear PoP,

The building at the corner of Sherman Ave and Park Road is a pop-up that needs to be judged, but, more importantly, from the dumpster that recently appeared out front, it looks like they recently restarted work on the building. Any ideas on what it’s going to be? Can any of your loyal readers help shed some light?”

A number of readers have recently inquired about this building. I believe someone said it is going to be a church. Can anyone confirm? As for judging the pop up, I think it looks awful. The material seems to be plywood and no windows have been cut yet. But if the external material matches that of the material below it may be decent. But sadly, I’m not very optimistic about this property. You guys?

It was truly amazing today. The water was a luminous blue/green. With Howard University in the background it was especially sweet. Now, if we could only go swimming in it…

Speaking of, does anyone know when the public pools open for the season?

This sculpture is from Howard University. It was really interesting to me because I hadn’t explored Howard’s campus before. I was only familiar with a few signs from Georgia Ave. and thought the campus looked rather bleak. But it is actually quite beautiful. I’m glad my initial impression couldn’t have been more wrong.
