Say what you will about Councilmember Jim Graham, but when violent crime occurs in his Ward I usually receive an email very quickly thereafter. Sadly I can’t say the same for getting official reports for violent crime in Ward 4. I have emailed Councilmember Bowser so hopefully she can give me an update soon.

So, I have received numerous emails about a shooting(s) last night. It is not clear to me if there were multiple shootings or just one that people reported from different locations. Following are some of the emails I received:

“Lots of craziness going on Randolph and Quincy, between Georgia and Kansas. Came home just now to find whole streets entirely sectioned off. When tried to get around, found the surrounding area, around 10th also sectioned off. There is a police van with one of those giant stadium lights set up illuminating Randolph street, and parked police cars and crime scene tape blocking off the whole area. When I asked if there had been an accident, or a shooting, the policeman I spoke with paused a bit, then responded “both”.

and

“Wanted to let you know of a shooting at 10th and randolph/quincy nw about 7:15pm tonight. Local crew reports someone was hit, cops finally here with some tape. If you find any good details we would really appreciate a post. Local news probably wont cover.”

and

“Just wondering if you heard anything about the gun shots in the neighborhood behind Raymond Recreation Center. I heard four shots last night (Saturday) just before sundown and called the police (so did several other people they said). Response time was immediate, but I saw nothing in the news this morning.”

I myself saw police tape and a floodlight at New Hampshire and Shepherd around 1:30 am last night. There were multiple yellow numbers on the ground which I assume indicate shell casings or some other evidence. So if anyone has more info please add to the comments. If I hear back from Councilmember Bowser, her staff or MPD I will add an update here.

Update: From Councilmember Bowser and Cmdr Brown:

“At approximately 8pm, we received a call for shots fired in the 900 blk of Quincy St. NW. Preliminary investigation revealed a veh fired shots at another car and both cars fled the scene. As one vehicle was fleeing, the driver struck several parked cars and a pedestrian. The pedestrian is in stable condition at a local hospital. The driver of the vehicle exited his vehicle in the 1300 blk of Randolph ST NW and made good his escape. We are seeking any information in reference to this case. Please call 1-888-919-CRIM(E)”

This Friday, the National Press Club will put the FUN back into fundraiser with Commedia dell Media, an evening of comedy hosted by WTOP’s ‘Man About Town’ Bob Madigan and featuring performances by a roster of DC’s most respected journalists.

Pessimism and economic doom may dominate the headlines, but on April 3 these reporters will cast off that pall of gloom by voraciously scratching the comedic underbelly of their industry. McClatchy’s Nancy Youssef will tell the audience what it’s really like for an Arab woman to cover the Pentagon. Newsweek’s Mark Hosenball will sing an ode for the scoundrels of Wall Street. Anna Mulrine of US News will expose the humorous side of military embeds. Conde Nast’s Matt Cooper and David Corn of Mother Jones will exercise their notorious comedic chops as part of a line-up that also includes radio personality Jamila Bey, Bloomberg’s Scott Lanman, UPI’s Shaun Waterman, long-time WUSA anchor Mike Walter, and the Washington Post’s Delphine Schrank.

Proceeds from the event will help support the important work of Reporters Without Borders and the Eric Friedheim Memorial Library. Tickets are $15 in advance, or $20 at the door, and are available for purchase at http://www.press.org/comedy/. A pre-show reception will open the doors at 7 pm, with the comedy beginning at 8.

We looked at the cool angled one to the right back in February (located on 15th Street across from Meridian Hill/Malcolm X Park). But now the one featured here is really starting to take shape. I guess the real question is what will the surface be – brick (like below) or vinyl? If it’s red brick it should look pretty good especially since it’s on a slope. And I still think the angled one on the right is going to be pretty sweet as well. Do you think this one featured in the photo above is going to look good?

More info and a virtual tour found here.

I’ve always been curious about these condos because I walk by this building nearly everyday. I think the location is phenomenal. After checking out the virtual tour the condo itself is also top notch. Though, I’m curious to know what people think of open kitchens like this? The asking price is $529,555. I really dislike ridiculous prices like this but do you think the market can support this asking price? What do you think of the condo itself?

I’ll be sponsoring tonight’s show at Velvet Lounge (915 U Street, NW) with three great bands playing. I’ll be giving out some free PoP t-shirts and there is supposed to be a really good emcee for the show as well. So if you weren’t able to make the happy hour at Solly’s last Thursday, come say hello at the show this Friday.

Here are the bands:

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every Monday and Friday. Anything good happen this week?

Ed. Note: This is a slightly different take on Robyn’s “in defense of” series. I certainly don’t think homelessness is a trivial matter but I do believe that some of the characters in the neighborhood most definitely add to the beautiful life. When I lived in Woodley Park, there was a great guy named Stoney who would light up my day nearly every morning saying/singing some impromptu rap/poetry. There are characters and there are trouble makers. I hope we don’t mix the two together. Do you have any characters that add to the beautiful life in your neighborhood?

Meet L. She’s been on the block for 45 years, and she’ll tell you that within seconds of meeting you. Well actually…L doesn’t necessarily ‘meet’ people. She prefers to walk up to you uninvited, size you up, and if she deems you fit, proceeds to tell you some news, then asks for either a cigarette, change, or a job offer to clean your stairs. L spends most of her time occupying a neighbor’s front porch, fence, or stairs, and walking up and down my block gathering the day’s gossip. Then at night you can find her spreading the news and otherwise being an uncouth, slightly jarring staple of Monroe Street. While I don’t know her complete story, L’s weathered the years. Her voice sounds like she swallowed granite, and her sobriety is always in question. Once she crashed party I threw and started her own dance party (remember, Prince?). When I first met her, I must admit I was a little dismissive. I’d put my head down and pick up pace as soon as I heard her charismatic baritone. But L caught onto me. It started slow, with a simple “What’s up deeeeva?” whenever I would pass. I’d nod back (who doesn’t like being called a diva?) and move on, but this wasn’t enough for L . One day she parked herself in the middle of the sidewalk not leaving room for any awkward maneuvering. Then she proceeded to give me the most bizarre interaction I’ve had in a while (besides for any I’ve had at Charlestown Races and Slots).

L: “DIVA!”

Me: “Oh, hey L.”

L: “Can I get my face back?”

Me: “Ermm…I don’t think I have your face? Maybe you lent it to someone else? Also, it appears that you have your face on right now.”

L: “No. I got YOUR face.”

After a few seconds of confusion, it was clear I wasn’t allowed passage in this Monty Python-esque challenge. I decided the best response was to play L at her own game.

Me: “Well, then L, can I have my face back please?”

She smiled, winked and said, “When I let it go (snap)!”

I didn’t get it, but it made me laugh for a good day and a half. When I see her today, we exchange our metaphorical faces, wink, and go on our separate ways. Now and then I’ll see new neighbors in their first L encounter. Not realizing she’s harmless, they clutch their belongings and look for the nearest cop car. I’m defending L. Sure, she’s loud not entirely trustworthy, and can be a bit of a nuisance when in a hurry. But she’s a staple of the block, and even though the neighborhood’s changing, I hope she remains for a while. Because eventually I would actually like my face back.
