Last year Celia (photographed above) was crowned champion with a narrow victory over Izzy (below). This year is going to be a little different. There will be three categories – Dog, Cat and other. We will vote on finalists in all three categories. If you entered last year you can enter again but please use a new photograph. I will accept entries until August 1st. Please email only one photograph per category to princeofpetworth (at) gmail (dot) com. In the subject line please say “coolest pet in PoPville contest”. I will make shirts up for the winners with the pet’s picture and coolest pet in PoPville written on the front and the PoP tree on the back.

Ed. Note:  I’ve gotten lots of emails from folks asking where they can donate their old computers, this seems like a great cause!

“Dear PoP,

I was hoping I could appeal to your readers and fellow DC’ers.
I teach middle school Language Arts at Sacred Heart School in Mt Pleasant.  We need your help!

I work with amazingly creative and determined kids who have the odds stacked against them.  We work together day in and day out to tackle reading and writing skills.  We are a bilingual school with most of our kids on scholarships.  I watch my kids grow every day as they take advantage of all the opportunities given to them.  However, our lack of funds for technology in the classroom is limiting our success.

We are hoping that maybe some of you have just bought new computers and are looking to get rid of your old ones.  We are not asking for brand new state of the art computers, but we will definitely take those as well ;)  Most of our students do not have personal computers in their homes and we do not have very many working ones in our school.  It is really hard for our kids to learn how to use computers and stay competitive in the growing trend of computer science when I don’t have a computer for them to use in the classroom.  If you have working computers or printers that you are trying to get rid of, we’ve got a home ready for them in my classroom!  We would appreciate it from the bottom of our hearts.

In the true spirit of an inner city teacher, I’m asking for another favor….!   If any of you are looking to donate Young Adult books, we would gladly accept those as well.  All books are welcome, but my kids do have a few requests:

The girls (and secretly some of the boys – shhh!) are asking for:

– The Twilight Series by Stephanie Meyer
The Friends by Rosa Guy
Lord of the Flies by William Golding
American Tall Tales by Mary Pope Osborne
My Life with the Chimpanzees by Jane Goodall

The boys and girls agree on asking for:

– Anything by Gary Soto – and other “Spanglish” books
Number the Stars by Lois Lowry
The Giver by Lois Lowry
Monster by Walter Dean Meyers
I, Robot by Isaac Asimov
Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster
– “We want to read funny books!  Ask for anything funny!”

Thank you so much to those of you who read this!  Your support is SO appreciated from the bottom of our hearts.

Much love,

Ms. Kullberg and the Sacred Heart Middle School Kids!

“Dear PoP,

Any word on what the new building is on 14th st NW (around Newton and Meridian)? Its still under construction, but a sign on the window says “the Social”, leading me to believe it’s a new bar or restaurant coming. I’ve googled, but haven’t come up with anything.”

I stopped in this weekend to get an update so I’m happy to say it’s still going to be the same spot. I spoke with one of the owners, AJ who showed me around the space. It’s starting to come together nicely. They are still waiting on some permits but they’ve got all the kitchen equipment and should open 10 days after all the permitting goes through. AJ says they should open in August at the latest. But as a commenter mentioned somewhere else, you never know how long those things take. Hey, at least the fence has been taken down. I’ve been monitoring this space closely and will update as soon as there is more progress.

Ojo Latino is a series by Néstor Sánchez Cordero. This week features great pictures from the 14th and Girard Park opening. Néstor says, “Images are around, the secret is to catch them at the right moment and with the right light…”

Two more after the jump. (more…)

The reader found this one on Capitol Hill. I kinda liked it because I just read a great short story about a tiger in an old New Yorker, dang can’t remember the author but I think it was in the summer fiction issue.

This a great wild one chock full of flowers over nearly every square inch of the yard.

I think I selected this house for door of the day once. The whole house is pretty sweet though. It’s located just off 18th Street on Florida (or is it U at that point…).

Wow, that was fast. Kiko’s had opened up in March at 3703 14th Street, NW. Thanks to an alert reader for sending the news:

“You know, those of us in North Columbia Heights had high hopes for Kiko’s Chicken at Spring and 14th. It was disappointing. Last night we noticed that it is closed and has a sign up that a new Peruvian chicken place will arrive in August.”

Hopefully the Peruvian spot will have more success.

This sweet shot is from scottahb. I really like the angle of this photo. I got to give it to Wonderland (11th and Kenyon, NW) they really have a good eye for details. Notice the ivy as well. I’m told a non damaging type of ivy has been planted which should grow all around the top for a pretty cool look.
