The Old Bi-Rite building slated to house Meridian Pint seems to be picking up steam. Here’s what it looked like in June. I wonder if it’s still going to look like the original rendering? It’s nice to see it starting to take shape.

Bogotron has been submitting some phenomenal candid shots. I think this is a perfect one for a Monday, titled “Man, With Cup”.
Submit your photos via email or to the PoPville flickr pool here.

This home is located at 4121 Arkansas Ave, NW:
The flier says:
“This great home is located minutes to the Metro and buses, and is adjacent to the entrance of picturesque Rock Creek Park. The open floorplan ensures gracious entertaining w/ gleaming hardwood floors, and features a beautifully executed new kitchen with granite counters and S/S appliances. As an added bonus, the home has a sunroom, a large basement with full bath, and 2 parking spaces.”
More info found here and a virtual tour found here.
This is the home that is located across the street from today’s house of the day. The virtual tour looks pretty fantastic but the reader cautions that the some of the rooms are actual quite small. While the listing says it is located in Columbia Heights it actually falls in that border area between Crestwood and Petworth. It’s been on the market 205 days. Originally it was going for $515,000 but is now on the market for $459,900. Does that sound reasonable?
You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every Monday and Friday. So anything good happen to you this weekend?

Back in March I reported that a deli was going to open up in the old Carvel space on 14th Street just north of Park Road, NW. They officially opened their door on Friday. I took a peek inside and it looks really nice.

You can see their Web site here. This is their third location with two others at 2023 G Street, NW and 2400 M Street, NW. In addition to sandwiches there is also a separate section for coffee:

And what I saw as a great sign – they carry Dr. Brown’s soda:

Anyone check them out this weekend?
The Washington Post reports:
“In a strongly worded opinion, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit condemned the roadblocks, which police used last summer in the city’s Trinidad neighborhood in Northeast Washington. The checkpoints, which have not been used in about a year, were a response to a spate of shootings, including a triple homicide.”
Council Member Mendelson sent out a press release:
“I am pleased with the U.S. Court of Appeals decision reversing a lower court’s approval of the controversial roadblocks. It is unfortunate that the District’s Attorney General was so wrong to insist that the roadblocks were constitutional. However, today’s decision is no surprise given that the DC Court of Appeals came to the same conclusion regarding roadblocks – ironically, also in Trinidad – in 1991.
All of us want to reduce crime – there is too much of it despite the recent drop in numbers. But the District government should pursue strategies that are proven to work. Roadblocks sound good – they’re a “get tough” approach – but they are controversial and often illegal. There are much more effective strategies, as Police Chief Cathy Lanier has shown, that have the community’s support and reduce crime.
Today’s decision is a triumph over rhetoric.”
I’m curious to know how you guys feel about this issue.

There is a time for doubt and a time for hope. This is most definitely a time for hope. When we discussed the park on Friday, some folks were rather skeptical. As I said in the comments there, I believe now is the time to offer the benefit of the doubt and to celebrate and enjoy the nice new facilities. In fact the opening celebration on Saturday afternoon was filled with joy, music, and good vibes.

There was an initial vote also held on Sat. to rename the park. The choices were picked by the “friends of the park” group. Nominees were Jim Graham Park, Mack Thompson Park (a local activist), Obama Park, Capital City Park, or a write in choice. The “winner” will be announced Monday evening. I put winner in quotes because the City Council will still need to pass legislation to officially rename the park. The park is being renamed because folks often confuse this park with the Girard Street Park which, incidentally, was also recently renovated.

A resident familiar with the background tells me:
“With respect to the naming of the park, this ‘friends of’ group established a shortlist for the community. The ANC commissioner for the park is Rosemary Akinmboni, and she agreed that the opening celebration of the park would be a good opportunity to get input from the community regarding the name. The main impetus for the renaming of the park is that there is another park down Girard St. closer to 15th St., which is commonly known as Girard Park. Needless to say, it is obvious how this could be confused with the 14th and Girard Park.”

The Park Place apartments located at the intersection of New Hampshire and Georgia, above the Petworth Metro, will have a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wed. with Mayor Fenty, CM Bowser and CM Graham at 3:30 pm. There will be a reception following from 4:30-6:30. You can enter through the main entrance on Quincy. Some units will be available to tour. I’ll take photos and post the monthly rent when I get the info sheet. I’ll also be updating with more retail options as they become available.
Fence is down on the units in the back as well:

This was a great scene. There was a martial arts demonstration outside Eatonville at 14th and V Streets NW on Friday afternoon. I think they’re part of the martial arts studio on U Street around the corner. This kid couldn’t have been older than 4 or 5. He gathered quite the audience during his performance.

This is located near today’s House of the Day. It’s at 16th and Arkansas. We’ve seen this artist, Allen Uzikee Nelson, all over town. His pieces are quite recognizable and all equally striking.
