For over 10 years, the lot at 901 Monroe St NE in Brookland has sat vacant, even though it’s across the street from the Brookland Metro station, five blocks from a grocery store, and surrounded by local businesses. I wanted to draw your attention to a story in our neighborhood of a local father taken into ICE detention one week ago today.

We have started a GoFundMe and are focusing on media attention while we work to bring him home. His family is very brave and have been willing to go on camera to draw attention to this injustice.

On Monday, September 8th, Gerson López Funes, was stopped by MPD at 13th and Farragut for a supposed traffic infraction while traveling home with is family in Washington, DC. Within minutes of the traffic stop (more…)

“Attorney General Brian L. Schwalb today issued a Consumer Alert to help inform District residents about predatory practices in the home solar system sales and loan industry.

Because federal tax credits for residential solar systems are ending at the end of 2025, residents may see an uptick in high-pressure sales tactics by salespeople for the home solar system industry. (more…)


“Dear PoPville,

There is a local scam going around that has now appeared on several listserves I’ve been on. A person joins a listserve claiming to be a member of the group, e.g. “a 20-something who attends XXX congregation,” then claims that they have a “group rate” for HVAC cleanings of $150. There is indeed a company that shows up and does something if you sign up, but it is tantamount to doing nothing and they are misleading about what services they provide. The original poster then tries to pressure you into signing more people up for the pyramid scheme. More details below. (more…)
