I think I’ve shown this awesome house in the past but now that I have a proper camera I had to show you the incredible wrap around porch. Damn, that’s sweet.

A taste:

“This Northwest D.C. neighborhood’s increasing residential and retail projects are sparking renewed interest among home-buyers. Multi-story loft and condo buildings are being built within walking distance of the Georgia Avenue-Petworth Metro station, making the area much more enticing for young professionals.”

I once posted on this neat school garden in the past. But this past weekend I was fortunate enough to encounter a bike tour being lectured about the garden. What I witnessed was “a bike tour of vegetable and herb gardens at local schools! Come learn about home-grown goodness at our city’s schools from people involved with the projects.”

There was a suggested donation of $10 to benefit the Women’s Garden Cycles Tour, a documentary project traveling by bike from Washington, DC to Montreal collecting stories from community gardeners.

For more information about future tours contact Emily at [email protected].

Pretty, pretty cool! Who knew cool things like this existed in DC?

Dear PoP,

Since this will be my first Halloween in the neighborhood, I was wondering if you could provide some advice on providing candy to trick-or-treaters. Do kids trick-or-treat in Petworth/Columbia Heights?

Thanks!

First Timer

Dear First Timer,
Hell yes they do! Our cousin to the east, Frozen Tropics, wrote a pretty good post on this topic that is worth checking out.

I can assure you that the kids of Petworth/Columbia Heights trick or treat with gusto! Honest to God you will see some of the cutest kids on the face of the earth. It is true not all will be wearing costumes but who cares?! Buy plenty of candy and be especially prepared during the hours of 6-8pm. In the past I haven’t witnessed any destruction at all (knock wood). This is a great time to become a part of the community. Enjoy!

I have often lamented the loss of front yards but I think this house has it right, what do you think?

Where is the sanctity of Halloween? You can see this innocent pumpkin was violated by some sort of creature, probably a squirrel no doubt. Who’s the 4D Commander again?

Anyone been to the Rib Pit on upper 14th St. I’m encouraged by all the wood in the window…

Arguably the most anticipated new bar and restaurant, Marvin, has opened on 14th Street just north of U Street. This was the bar that had the soft opening last week. If you like Eighteenth Street Lounge and Local 16 you are going to love this place. It mirrors a similar exclusivity like ESL as you can only spot the place by a tiny sign (pictured) on its front door. But don’t be fooled by that subtlety. Despite the muted decor on the outside it is quite swank on the inside. You’ll find the restaurant on the first floor. The restaurant has a Belgian theme and offers Steak Frites ($24), Lobster Waterzooi ($25), lots of Moules Frites choices ($16), a Marvin Burger ($15) and a number of other choices. (more…)

Thanks to Susan for sending me this phenomenal photo. Sadly, the truck drove for the now defunct Wings n Things restaurant that was located on Kennedy and Georgia. Thankfully this truck will now be memorialized and God willing placed on a t-shirt one day. In case you can’t read it, it says:

“A Chicken Ain’t Nuthin’ But a Chickens Butt…But the Wings the Thing!”

I ran into some folks from the Sierra Club outside the Petworth metro on Sunday. They were all volunteers on a mission to fight global warming. To that end the Sierra Club took a two block radius around the metro and handed out free energy saving light bulbs. When asked how they chose Petworth, they explained to me that Georgia Avenue is one of the proposed locations for new energy efficient streetcars which they strongly support. With the lightbulbs they handed out postcards that residents could mail to Mayor Fenty in order to encourage him to “provide DC residents with convenient, energy efficient alternatives to driving by ending the delays in the citywide streetcar plan”. Certainly a worthy cause.

To further raise awareness the Sierra Club is hosting a Beer Night from 7-9pm Tuesday, Oct. 23 at Temperance Hall. According to the flier they gave me “Enjoy Free Beer. Meet New People. Protect the Planet.” You can visit their Web site here.

They had me at Free Beer.
