I had heard a rumor a while back that Manny and Olga’s was coming but I just received an official press release today. The press release says:

“Silver Spring, MD – January 8th 2008 – Manny & Olga’s Pizza Systems Inc. announced today the expansion of its newest unit in the Petworth neighborhood of Washington, DC. With construction getting ready to begin the opening of the store is scheduled for early Summer 2008.”

Oddly it doesn’t give a location. But I do think this is a good development. I have a buddy who lives near the 14th Street location and he swears by it as a great (drunken) late night snack . I can certainly appreciate having that option closer to home.

It says something like ‘Congregating in a group of two or more for the purpose, sale or use of drugs is an arrestable offense and you can be imprisoned for no more than 180 days and/or fined $300.’ What the hell is this? Isn’t selling or using drugs always an arrestable offense? Or are they saying that they can arrest you merely for being in a group of two or more? No, you have to be using or selling drugs right? So why don’t they just arrest for that? I’m so confused.

I love the fact that the thief stole only one shoe. I’d say it is the silver lining of this whole story. But seriously, probably not a good idea to leave anything in plain sight in your car overnight that may tempting to a thief (and never underestimate what is tempting to a thief). The reader writes:

“Just want to let your readers know who live in or around columbia heights and park their car on Hiatt place that there have been a string of incidences where cars have been broken into and random things have been taken from cars. My roommate’s car was a victim and they stole a dress, one shoe (not the other that was right next to it) and her toyota manual (out of the glove compartment). The individual who broke the window also left a great big blood stain on her passenger seat, I guess they failed to get a rock or metal tube from the nearby construction. Police were already there by the time she got to her car but she was not the only one.”

This is a bit of an awkward pop up. But it could be worse if the front were vinyl like the side is. It almost looks a cartoon character. Doesn’t it? Well, I don’t like to judge, I’m just saying…

I’ve featured this sculpture before but I didn’t have a proper camera at the time so now you can see the details in all its glory. Is this Zeus and Athena? Maybe it’s a little over the top? I can imagine being at the garden store going to pick up some mulch and seeing this sculpture, and thinking “holy cow, that is awesome, I have to have it” and then leaving with just the mulch. I respect the hell out of the folks who followed through with this purchase. I’d love to have heard the neighbors reaction when this was first displayed.

You know you are rolling in it when you have copper gutters. Right? Aside from looking cool, what is the functional benefit of a copper gutter? I tell you what, if I had copper gutters, I’d definitely have central air conditioning…

A reader has been a big fan of this Ethiopian Restaurant on 14th and Crittendon. By the by I think Crittendon is probably the weirdest name I’ve heard for a street. Crtittendon, say it a few times. Just like banana. Banana is very weird word as well if you say it a few times. And if you drink a lot beers. Sorry back to the Ethiopian Restaurant. Has anyone eaten here? The reader sent me this photo but I’m actually, also, quite intrigued by “Ana’s” next door. I dig the take out Pupusas sign.

Another nice paint job on this one. So what’s up with the turrets? Is that storage space or is just a high ceiling? I’ve noticed many row houses actually have faux turrents, you can see some of them are completely flat from behind.

I wonder if it was the inspiration for the Spy vs. Spy graphic or vice versa. But what I really wonder is do Neighborhood Watch Areas really exist in DC? I wonder what designates an area as such. While I think it is a very good idea, do you think the signs act as a deterrent to potential criminals?

This almost looks like Jerusalem stone. Pretty neat. When completed do you think it will fit in with the more traditional brick homes on the block?
