Today in Hawks around Town – Time for your Closeup

by Prince Of Petworth May 18, 2017 at 11:00 am 16 Comments

Well this is awesome. Thanks to Julie for sending yesterday: “This visitor to USDA HQ!”

If you spot a hawk or any other bird of prey or any interesting wildlife around town, lunching or otherwise, and get a good photo please send in an email where you spotted it to princeofpetworth@gmail.com and I’ll add it to the queue. Hawks around Town is made possible by a generous grant from the Ben and Sylvia Gardner foundation.

I am just looking a photo, on the Internet, taken earlier this week and I am suitably intimidated………

  • L.

I would be scared $#*+less if I looked up from my desk and saw that. Kudos to OP for having the presence of mind to snap a photo!

    • Julie

This is OP – no presence of mind required, he was hanging out there for a long time! I was flipping out and kept taking photos closer and closer through the plexiglass. Apparently he is a frequent visitor and pigeon-hunter at the building.

    Beautiful! A Cooper’s hawk?

    • PFlyer

Actually, its a red tail, and it looks to be an adult.

    Handsome smile!

Ha! It actually looks like someone just said “Say cheese!”

      • Ben

I was thinking more of a “Squaaakkk”

  • wpk_dc

Amazing bird! I love seeing these Hawks around Town posts.

Off-topic, but I was like “is that a real foundation?” and a quick Google search led me to an old post where you explain why PoP called some City Paper writer an idiot. Quite entertaining, but I think that means my lunch break is over… :D

Sadly the guy who filmed the PoPtrekkers removed them from his host and they’ve vanished forever :(

But in fairness some of the City Paper folks are idiots (at least since 2009):

“And we have to ask: Journalists are losing their jobs faster than they can say “twitterer” and a foundation is giving money to a blogger for this?”

Ed. Note: It’s not a real foundation.

“Excuse me kind sir, I heard I could pick up some grade A raw meat at this location?”

  • Vered

    “Whachoo lookin at?”

  • Ally

    Awesome photo!

I’m pretty sure this is half of a pair of red-tails nesting on the USDA building (north side west pediment). There are four nestlings, and they have just started fledging and hopping out of the nest.

As intimidating as this photo is, I think this may be the smaller male.
