About that big DCFD Response at 13th and Clifton Last Night – It was Worse than I Thought

A few folks wrote in last night:

“any idea what’s happening on 13th and Clifton?”

Alan Henney tweets the bizarre/frightening situation:

PERSON TRAPPED IN TRASH CHUTE/COMPACTOR, 1312 Clifton St NW-DC. 2 rescue squads attempting rescue now.”

“u/d WOMAN DOWN TRASH CHUTE- Wardman Ct Apts @ 1312 Clifton St NW. 3sty fall to sub-basement-in compactor for 90mins.Conscious/going to Med*”

Updates when/if more is known.

Wow! How does something like that even happen?

    • textdoc

Hard to see how this could be accidental (at least if the trash chute doors are anything like the ones in my old building). I hope this wasn’t a case of someone pushing/shoving her in. :(

      • LittleBluePenguin

        holy shit that’s grim.

      • FridayGirl

I had the same thought, textdoc. My other thought was, isn’t that technically a low-income (or at least affordable) housing building? I do wonder about how well it is kept, as far as safety features go….

I used to live in a building east of the river that had a surprisingly unsecured/unsafe trash chute. Little kids used to be able to shove all kinds of things down there with relative ease, one time they allegedly managed to throw another kid’s bike down it. I could see this being some kind of drunken accident.

Friend of a friend drunkenly did this to herself in NYC and nearly died. Extensive breakage followed quickly by an addiction to pain medication. Do not imbibe while near trash chutes!

    • AG

Maybe they were trying to escape the flames?

      • ExWalbridgeGuy

        What flames?

      • AG

Ooops, I saw fire response and confused the red/yellow lights in the photo with fire, so I assumed there was a fire and someone trapped in the shoot. Clearly today is a more than one cup of coffee kind of day.

  • 7thStTechGuy

That is up there on my nightmare list.

  • Sleepy Resident

I thought it was a break-in at first because of all the banging that woke me up.

Waiting for the cops, I learned it was a girl leaving an afternoon/evening party….

As someone who tosses trash in this chute regularly, you’d need to actually hoist yourself up and climb in a fairly small space (aka oversized trash tosses require significant shoving to make it through the door). Management said last night that she said she wasn’t pushed, helped, or shoved.

As a 3.5 year resident, this is the first time I’ve ever had an issue with security here….and was momentarily heartbroken because most of the community is friendly, young families. I’d hate to have them and particularly their kids) feel unsafe in their homes. It is an affordable housing community that has been a wonderful place to call home!

Happy to find out that our complex was NOT getting broken into, sad to know some visiting girl was so upset/drunk that she thought throwing herself down out trash chute was an option, very glad that she is OK and didn’t die (our compactor comes on immediately most times), and hoping our wonderful maintenance team (who got called in at 1am and who were still working at 9am when I left) can easily fix the garage, the chute, and other damage from her rescue.

    • SWDC

This, “sad to know some visiting girl was so upset/drunk that she thought throwing herself down out trash chute was an option” will keep me amused for the rest of the day, thank you!

I hope the complex bills her for the repairs.

      • textdoc

Wow. Surprised at the schadenfreude here.

        • Mayim

Agreed, textdoc. That was a particularly callous remark, SWDC. Clearly someone’s not going to throw themselves down a trash chute for sh*ts and giggles. I hope this woman gets help.

          • Anon Spock

If she’s truly mentally unstable, I can’t imagine this is a first outburst. I blame whoever she was visiting for this scenario, and both parties should be charged for repairs.
I do hope she gets the help she needs, but it shouldn’t get her off the hook.

      • Reality

        grow up.

    • FridayGirl

      +1.
Also very happy to know this isn’t a security issue, since I considered trying to live in your complex at one point!

  • Mr. Brightwood

Maybe she was just cosplaying the first Star Wars movie.

  • CrankyNDupont

Maybe she heard they’re doing another “Charlie & the Chocolate Factory” reboot? I MUST LAND THE ROLE OF VERUCA!

  • When I was in college a kid died this way. As far as I know, they never found out how he got in there (ie, was shoved down as some sort of prank/hazing or drunkenly went for a trash ride). This woman is lucky she’s okay!!!
