This is making me sad, I’m working this weekend (Sat & Sun, 6am-6pm), and I have to show up physically. Sigh.

  • But will the gov close on Friday?!?!?!?!?!!

    • Farragut

OPM probably won’t officially say until 4am Friday morning, though with the “bigness” of this event, they might actually say earlier, like Thursday evening (I remember last year being surprised by like a 9pm or 10pm announcement).

      • Apparently this isn’t suppose to start until around noon. OPM is taking the huge risk of opening and then having people drive home under a blizzard watch. What year was it that people basically left their cars on the road b/c OPM decided to end the day at like 2 PM and people couldn’t get home? 2011? I’d say 95% chance they close, and if we’re getting 3 feet of snow, they’re probably going to close Monday.

That was January 26, 2011. I remember, because I had to stay at work an extra 3 hours before my relief was able to make it in. Also, part of the problem was that OPM didn’t coordinate with the city at all–the District was still getting their plows set up but the flood of traffic on the road screwed up what could’ve been a more orderly process.
          .
And I’d guess that OPM isn’t going to do an early dismissal… they’ll probably do telework and make people stay home, especially with how early the snow might start.

          • That particular storm wasn’t just a District issue; there were cars abandoned on 495, 95, the GW Parkway… it was an all-around clusterf*ck

Yep, as a contractor I had to wait until the client was dismissed. So I left just before 3pm and didn’t get home until 11pm. I’m so glad I’m no longer bound to a driving commute!

        • +1 completely agree with domrep. If we’re making bets I say OPM will call it Thursday night late (around 10 or 11pm like they did at one point last year) and will also at LEAST delay on Monday if not close completely (which seems like the safe bet).
          .
          Stay safe, all.

    • i bet we won’t close all day. perhaps early closing depending on snow. Friday is a ghost-town at my fed office anyway, and there will be even fewer this week.

We are, unfortunately, required to telework even when the federal gov’t is closed.

      • My office is like that, too, but it’s always pretty funny when *everyone* is teleworking on a snow day. 3-4 hours of high productivity and furious e-mail traffic, then after lunch it’s as quiet as Christmas Eve!

      • At least you get the option to telework though. Many do not and would gladly trade one or two snow-days for the ability to telework other days throughout the year.

      • yea my feb building will be a ghost town as well. luckily i worked it out with my contractor (fda) and my company that as long as i take home my laptop and have my phone on, i wont have to use vacation time to make up for the day as we had to in the past.

If we are not going to get a snow day, then why bother snowing?

  • What bars will be open? SNOWBEERS!

  • I can’t wait! Trudging through the snow, shoveling the walk with hot coffee at the ready, attempting to teach my 1-year-old how to build a snowman while he ignores me and tries to run into the street. This is going to be great.

I bought some winter gear for a trip to Iceland in a few weeks so what has two thumbs and will be wandering the streets of Capitol Hill this weekend doing full up winter gear testing? This guy! (this joke doesn’t work online. I realize that now and I’m sorry).

  • nightborn

Ugh. I hope this passes us by.

  • Yeah! I just bought snowshoes on Amazon Prime, had to pay for one day shipping because they are not shipping on Friday or Saturday. Hope OPM calls it on Friday. Thanks SNOWBAMA (in advance).

  • Yay! Here’s to being able to get some XC skiing in this weekend.

Maybe we should do a neighborhood happy hour too?

  • I remember in the early 1980s OPM waited until 10 am to shut down Feds after it snowed over night. It took me 5 hours to reach a supervisor to say I was not coming in. Then OPM dismissed. People in my office got home at midnight and later! Or the time in 1985, OPM dismissed Feds at 2 pm. This was the day Air Florida crashed into 14th St., bridge and Metro crashed at Gallery Pl. Now OPM will allow Feds to leave using a grid; the further you live from the office, you go first, the closer you live, leave last. Of course, I’m not sure OPM factored the delays on Metrorail but the Council of Govt , including OPM officials, do meet hours before storm, to determine early dismissal, no-go, or late arrival. I use my own judgment since I walk to work and ride Metro home.

  • I have a flat roofed rowhouse. Am I meant to shovel the roof too (presumably to prevent it from caving in from the weight)? Its a newish roof, and my inspector said it was in good condition (5-10 years old).

  • They make a big fuss like this every year. I wouldn’t be surprised if we got nothing-2 inches

  • I Dont Get It

Darn it…and I’m at the gate leaving for Florida! I love big snow storms here! It’s so quiet and magical here when the snow stops!

  • Chances that the roads will be clear enough to drive out of downtown early Sunday afternoon?
