You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks and no need to correct people’s grammar. This is a place to vent and/or celebrate things about daily life in DC.

Rant: Realizing that all those years I thought I was never affected by seasonal allergies was because I had dogs and was taking Zyrtec, not thinking about the side benefit.
Rant: Major sinus cold for the past 2 days, barely slept at all last night.
Rave: Being able to work remotely any time I need to.
Reminder: PoPville HH next Wednesday at Dacha!

    • Jealous of your last rave. So how do PoPville HHs work? I want to go to one!

    • Re: allergies. Are you sure you’re not just getting sick? I have a lot of allergies but got allergy tested (after stopping zyrtec for a sufficient amount of time) and ruled out spring pollen allergies which was a surprise.

  • Rave: I took down an Ollie the dog sign this morning during my walk from the gym to the metro. It felt good to be able to do something so neighborly.
Rave: Matcha mint spinach avocado almond milk smoothie — so green and so good!
Rant: Matcha is not an adequate coffee substitute.
    Rave: Friday!

    • I took an Ollie sign down in Mt.P last night! Felt the same way!

    • emvee

I removed an Ollie sign in LeDroit Park. Three cheers for community!

    • I was going to remove one I saw in a coffee shop and then I felt like everyone around me would think I was being mean…

    • I took down a few Ollie signs along U Street yesterday! Felt good 🙂

    • Very kind of y’all. Three cheers for COMMUNITY indeed!

    • Where do you get your matcha, online? Thought I’d be able to find some at Whole Foods but no luck!

      • Amazon (where I probably do way too much of my shopping) — I ordered the Pure Matcha brand just be reading reviews. Honestly, I don’t know enough about tea/haven’t tried enough kinds to say how it rates, but I like it. And while costly, it isn’t as ungodly expensive as some other brands.

  • Rode the new Metro train last night. I like them, but…they pretty much remind me of the trains in New York, the only difference is there aren’t benches on these trains and DC trains in general are cleaner. Seats are somewhat uncomfortable, not a lot of cushion.

    • Yes, but I still think removing the rugs is a better idea. I’ve seen too much what happens to them on the late night trains.

I remember when some of the trains were updated in NYC in the early 1980s. The seats installed were miniscule, and they needed to retrofit them for the more ample American build. That’s the on benefit of bench seats.

  • Rant: Roomie is a Clydesdale! Never had anyone slam doors as much even after I mentioned it was an issue. I like the girl, but jesus! I’m going to have to try and make ear plugs work, but they always come out in the middle of the night even when they are way down in there. Any tips?
Unsure: Former ladyfriend hasn’t given me a day to meet, and I’d like to see her to talk and such, but my week is filling up quickly. This weekend will be the make it or break it.
Rant/rave: Invited to HH 5 mins before I stepped into the gym, but another one is planned for next week. Must not get drunk on a weeknight!
Rave: Chilly mornings are perfect for walking to work.
Rave: Really looking forward to buying another place in the near future. All the good investments for me.

ear plugs: my mother gave me some fancy silicon earplugs that have inserts so you can adjust the size. Not only are they super comfortable, but they are flat on the outside so don’t fall out. I’ll see if I can find out where she got them. They are awesome.

    • My sister is the smallest, but by far the loudest person in my family. I’ve realized over the years that she just is oblivious to that fact that she’s so much louder. It’s pretty late in life to change that.
My ear plug advice is to get the right size. I buy womens ear plugs, I know, I know, but the smaller size actually is more comfortable if you have to wear them for days on end. OSHA suggests using the hand on the same side to pull your ear back, use the opposite hand to roll up and insert the ear plug, then keep your finger on the ear plug until it finishes expanding.

      • I have bigger ears, but that is a thought.. I do exactly that, but I toss and turn which makes at least one fall out.
She is the bigger of the 2 of us. I’m going to try the plugs, but I may mention it again the next time it happens late night. She’s such a quiet person 99% of the time, but that last 1% is a doozy.

    • Red Panda

My roommate is the same way. A white noise machine has saved my life.

    • Have you tried a white noise machine (or app) instead of (or in addition to) earplugs? I’m addicted to my Homedics SoundSpa machine, and when I travel, I use the TMSoft.com app “White Noise.”
Some recommendations from a past discussion:

      • I have not. I’ll look into the app because I don’t know where I’d put the machine with my humidifier as well. My dog is an oaf, so I cannot leave it on the floor. Do you feel the app is as good as the machine?
I know we discussed this before. Thanks for the link.

        • The machine is small — it’s about the same size as my alarm clock/radio, and I keep it on a lower shelf of my nighttable.
Good question on whether the app is as good as the machine. I haven’t stopped using the machine in favor of the app, so I don’t think the app is better. Probably about the same as the machine, maybe slightly inferior. But the app is free, so you could always try it out and see if you think it’s sufficient.

      • HaileUnlikely

I use this one and haile recommend it: http://www.amazon.com/Marpac-DOHM-DS-Natural-actual-Machine/dp/B000KUHFGM. It is basically a little fan in a box with little holes in it. You can modulate the pitch and volume over a pretty decent range. I find the mechanical noise to be much more relaxing than digitized noise, though I do use an app on my phone when I travel and it’s definitely better than nothing.

    • Ally

If it’s just an issue with the door slamming, can you either put weatherstripping on the doors or else install dampers (http://homeguides.sfgate.com/make-slamming-door-silent-49040.html)? Not sure if you’re renting or if you own, but seems like either might be an option to fix the noise issue. Or get a new roommate 😉

      • Given my bad luck with roomies (not paying rent on time, not showering, not locking doors) I’m trying to make my own modifications before asking her to shape up or ship out. I’m renting here, but I will look into those things. Thanks!

Rave: The sun is shining and birds are chirping!
Rave: This weekend! Tomorrow, I’m going to a conference on the Civil War at UVA, and Sunday my SIL will be in town. Looking forward to both.
Rave: Seriously y’all, this conference. The speakers are amazing: Ed Ayers! Fitz Brundage! Gary Gallagher! James McPherson! John Neff! And tons of other excellent historians!

  • Rant: Birthday really not off to the greatest start. I managed to get super sick last night when out with friends — I had to ask my kind Uber driver on the way home to let me barf on the side of the road, and I hadn’t even had any adult drinks. (No, peanut gallery, I’m not pregnant!) And when I got home, I found some shoes I had ordered and shipped to my house had been brazenly stolen off my front porch.
Rave: At least I got to spend QT with my husband this morning and got to play with my puppy, so today is looking up.
Rave: Friday birthday means that my birthday celebration last for several days. And I have several days of celebrations planned 🙂

  • Emmaleigh504

    Rant: don’t feel like working
Rave: because I have ideas for nieces graduation gift and want to shop

    • Rave: Your rant. Anybody know a good excuse to bale out of work early?

      • Your neighbor just called and said it looks like your basement is flooding. (On Monday: crisis averted! The spigot was broken, but the water didn’t get in.)
Your daycare just called and said your kid hit his head. (On Monday: crisis averted! Just a bump, he’s fine.)
The police just called and said they found your car. You didn’t know it had been stolen! (On Monday: it wasn’t your car, just your license plate.)

        • I love these all.

        • Emmaleigh504

if you’re a renter you can say the manager called and a pipe burst in the building and your apartment got flooded; on monday only your kitchen was flooded, so it was easy clean up and nothing was damaged. (this actually happened to me once and the management company had someone clean the water for me!)

        • emvee

As someone with Celiac’s disease, I once said I had been glutened and couldn’t come into work, and then went to a job interview. (Bonus: landed that job!)

      • Boss is off today so I made a haircut appointment for 3:30 pm. Not an excuse…just a fact and I’m doing it so THERE!

  • Rant: My lovely natural chicken that I roasted last night wasn’t as good as it should have been, and it was my fault. I draped strips of bacon over it, but all that did was give it a sort of fake-smoke flavor. Lesson: don’t mess with your winning recipes.
Query: Is there any way to get even a vague sense of the line-up at the concert tomorrow? My kid wants to see one of the bands, but we aren’t going to hang around the Mall for (potentially) 8+ hours just for one act.

    • GiantSquid

Now, I’m a big fan of bacon, but why on the roast chicken? Olive oil, kosher salt, and fresh pepper, you’re good to go.

      • What can I say, it seemed like a good idea at the time. Will henceforth be sticking with oil and salt on the skin, and stuffing the cavity with aromatics (onions, garlic, celery tops, thyme, rosemary, savory, lemon– whatever’s one hand.)

        • My mom wraps turkey breasts around stuffing, and then wraps bacon all around the turkey breast for Thanksgiving – it is delicious and keeps it nice and moist! 🙂

  • Emmaleigh504

Happy birthday to the birthday Popvillagers! Have a great year!

  • Additional Rave: Transman is handily beating other men for the cover of Men’s Health. Take that transphobes.

  • Rant: Pretty sure I have strep
Rant: I don’t have a primary care doc, so minute clinic it is
Rant: My MIL is insisting on visiting even though 2/3 of our house is sick. So when she gets her other grandchildren – whom she visits every other week even though it’s a 300 mile one way trip – sick, it’ll be my fault, I’m sure.
Rant: husband got waitlisted at his first choice for law school. So more uncertainty in our house. AWESOME.
Mega Rave: My (silly) dog was in yesterday’s animal fix!

    • I knew Lucy belonged to you. Baby gate+breed you mentioned as a preference
One Medical is awesome. 3 offices and even if you cannot find an appt online you can call in, and they’ll try to work it out for you. $200 annual fee but well worth it.

    • Ugh. I just pulled myself off waitlists and made a decision because I couldn’t handle the uncertainty (also realized I didn’t want to go to school in a city and I was only waitlisted at city schools). Sounds like he has fantastic choices regardless– but I hope you get some clarity soon on where you’ll be living in a few months.

      • yeah it stinks – but THANK YOU for taking yourself off wait lists – I hope people start telling schools they’re withdrawing from acceptance/waitlist. They said they have no time line, but hope to start pulling from the WL after 1 May. I just don’t know if we’ll be able to take a spot in AUGUST. I mean, I think the way they do all this is fine for a single person with easy means of just getting up and moving. But for us, it’s an ordeal. I WANT to move back home, which is best for us in the long run, but I’m not sure the uncertainty is OK for us for now, ya know?

        • Andie302

Sorry about the uncertainty. I got off of a waitlist (along with probably 15% of my first year class) within two weeks of classes starting. I literally drove to one school to return books and then hightailed it to the other one to look for housing.
You could always wait, and then undertake the ordeal after he started classes. He could get a temporary place alone while you take your time coordinating things. It sounds like you’re fed up with your housing anyway, so a move is a move, whether it’s here or there. Plus isn’t he waitlisted at literally one of the top three schools in the country? On top of you wanting to move home…that sounds like too much opportunity to ignore for a few months of uncertainly. I say this as the woman who wants to murder her contractor because of a renovation that’s running long…so I completely understand that it’s easier said than done, especially with a child and pet to consider. Good luck!

          • That’s a good point. Maybe he could even stay short-term with your parents if necessary, rather than a temporary place on his own?

          • Oh we will probably do just that. He can stay with one at our folks place and go from there. He got in to very good schools but they are night programs. Not ideal for our current situation/sanity!

    • Oh my goodness you’re Lucy’s people? That picture was hilarious! She looks like a loveable, goofy oaf 🙂

      • thanks! she’s a good girl. I’ve never sent in her picture, but this one was too good. Next I should send in a vine of her snoring and/or dreaming.

    • Re: your first rave, I was in exactly your situation about a month ago…went to the Medics USA in Columbia Heights, and was seen within 10 minutes by Dr. Africa. Ended up selecting him as my PCP since I didn’t have one. Great experience there, and went back when I had a subsequent sinus infection. No appointment, in within 10 minutes again.

  • Mug of Glop

Rave: Weather looks good this weekend.
Rant: Which means I have no excuse not to go for a long run.
Rave: Attending two different barbecue-ish parties this weekend. I might be meated out, especially after getting the Korean-style ribs at Drafting Table last night. (Those were pretty good, by the way. 4.5 stars.)
Rave: Excuse to make chili corn bread!
Rave-ish: Went to Maki Shop last night to try it out. It was pretty okay, but a bit over-priced. Maybe I should head back there either earlier in the day or when I’ve had more to drink. They close at 10 pm, but would make a killing (especially from me) if they were open late on Friday/Saturday. Need more snack options than just Amsterdam Felafel, which is great, but sometimes I’m not in the mood.
Rave: STAR WARS TRAILER! It doesn’t look too stupid, so I’m guardedly hopeful about it!
Rant: Not enough to rant about.

    • That was MY reaction to the Star Wars trailer, too! Also, ooooh music. That music, after all these years…

    • Anytime is a good time for chili and cornbread. Loved the Star Wars trailer!

    • I want to rewatch all of the Star Wars movies, I haven’t seen most of them since I was about 12 and am pretty sure I skipped the most recent one b/c it didn’t seem worth the risk that JarJar Binks might be in it.
I need some advice: should I watch them in the order they were released or in their order in the series?

      • Mug of Glop

If you really want to include the prequels in your viewing, as I infer, I think the order that most makes sense is IV, V, I, II, III, VI. That preserves some of plot points and twists and surprises and whatnot, if you’re coming to the series new and know literally nothing about the story. If you are already familiar with the storyline in general, just go chronologically by episode number. If you want an experience that won’t give you a migraine from all the gnashing of teeth, go out and get some LaserDisc copies from 1994 and forget the rest.

    • RANT: Star Wars. I worry Lucas/Ford will ruin this just like they ruined Indiana Jones. BTW, Chewbacca should be balding by now.

      • Mug of Glop

Eh, the supposed lack of involvement by Lucas gives me some hope that it won’t be completely stupid. And for all we know, Wookiees actually gain hair as they get older!

  • GiantSquid

    Revel: It’s gorgeous outside.
Rant: Didn’t get job I had been asked to apply for. Good reasons for not getting it, but still smarts. Back to hunting.
    Revel: New mattress tomorrow!!!
Revel: Brunch with girlfriends on Sunday, finally giving one of them a quilt I’ve owed her for three years.
Revel: The MPD officers in SUVs that pulled up next to each other in the street. One gave a holler to the other via the loudspeaker. I started cracking up, they looked over and realized they’d been seen so I waved. If I had a loudspeaker attached to my car, I’d be doing that all the time and it’s nice to see the police having some fun.

    • RE: rant- I had the same thing happen. They asked me to apply, I was the only applicant, and they waited for months until someone else applied then hired them. I lacked the necessary experience, but I was honest from day 1, so why even ask me? So frustrating because it was exactly what I’d like to do.

    • same job thing happened to my husband. They then ended up hiring 2 people, one with zero experience who they then had to let go and repost the job. They asked him to reapply and still nothing.

    • epric002

and same thing happened to my husband. he was really bummed about it until a couple months later when he discovered that the person they did hire was a direct relative of a big-wig in that field. ahhh, nepotism.

  • rave: made a sign yesterday to hang from my window for LAYC. i said “thanks! we <3 u! huck is the fat gray cat and gandy is the tiny tabby!" i can't wait to go home and see if they made a new sign for us!

happy birthday to popville’s birthday triplets!
    rave: friday!
    rave: nice weather!
    rave: mom coming to visit!
rave: lots of raves + friday + birthday = feeling pretty great!

  • Apologies for my prideful, shameless excitement below:

RAVE: Seeing something I worked on for three years of my life finally come to fruition. On the ground, real changes in the city I love.
Rant: It only took EIGHT freaking years. That’s governance for you.
Rant: The people implementing it are doing it in a way I think might not be successful…
Rave: BUT they are using most of my recommendations and building on the work I did. And come April 23rd, it’ll be real! Wish I could be there.

  • Question: My friend’s brother is giving up part of his liver to save a dying cousin. Any suggestions on what I should send? The family is, understandably, stressed out.

Rave: It is not my friend who is going under, thank god. She was also a match.

  • Becks

Rave: The plumber came and replaced the cracked pipe in the kitchen. No more leaks!
Rant: He arrived at 7AM. Blech!
Rave: I sprayed the yards for weeds this morning and should be able to play in the garden tomorrow.
Super rave: I planted Green Bell Pepper seeds and now have about 40 seedlings. I will wait until they get about 5 inches tall and transplant them to other pots.

  • emvee

Rave: Caught the last of the cherry blossoms around the tidal basin last night
Rant: Do not walk many miles in $15 H&M flats. I know it’s common sense but it didn’t occur to me until mile three of walking and my feet were swelling up like balloons.
Rave: A friend in Baltimore is a co-founder of a theater there, and they’ve just announced their spring gala date. Good times ahead in May with my favorite cover band, PBJamz.

  • JayKay

Rave: Red Wings!! Might not have been their best game but a win is a win.
Rave: Its Friday and beautiful outside.
Rant: Stuck inside. Stupid work. 🙂

  • Emmaleigh504

Rave: Just ordered swiss army knife with niece’s name engraved on it for graduation. #fancy
Rant: making myself so some work before I look for some jewelry for her.
Rave: looks like work will be pretty quiet.

  • Revel: A dear friend has offered to help us out in fulfilling a dream of ours.
Rant: But he’s dragging his feet on it.
Rant: Not sure how to proceed without either hurting his feelings or putting off our plans. I feel like this is one of those no-win situations.

  • Rave: Heading to NYC for six days! Some fun, some work. Mostly fun work.
    Rant: I way over packed.
Rant: While in the middle of picking up after my dog last night, some guy started telling me how I need a husband and then listing all the reasons why he should be my husband. He kept going for a whole block while walking backwards. Took a lot of restraint to not throw the dog sh*t at him. Blech.

    • epric002

i agree you should have thrown the (bagged) crap at him. 😛

    • I don’t we don’t engage with crazy, but… could have been fun to tell him that you’d had three husbands, but they all died. The police never proved anything, though.

    • emvee

I went running with my SO and BFF the other day and some guy called after us, “Yo man, which girl belongs to you? I’ll take the other!” and I yelled back, “I BELONG TO NO ONE” as my SO said, “THE THREE OF US ARE UNIT” Sigh. Yes, you should have a husband because obviously you’re incapable of living without a man.

  • Rave: It’s Friday, it’s beautiful out and I’m wearing a dress!
Rave: so far today, no crazy stomach pain!
Rave: celebrating a friend’s birthday tonight!
Rant-ish: Not sure if I should really eat or drink anything at the bar, don’t want to tempt fate
Rave: Found a recipe for something called “Knock You Naked” bars, and obviously will be making them this weekend!
Rave: Chai from baked and wired.

  • Has anyone who applied for the visitor parking permit (vpp) from ddot received a 2015 one? Remember earlier they sent out cards with the date “2014” to those who applied in 2015. A guest got a ticket for expired vpp.

  • Rant: Girl I was into dropped the hammer over text msg. Seriously?
Rave: Good weather and visitors for the weekend. Time for some serious tourist effort. Arboretum, with lunch on H st? Tidal Basin? Any ideas?

    • Anonynon

      @rant1 yikes…what happened

    • Hillwood House is probably gorgeous this week, if you like that sort of thing.

      • I’ve never been there and keep meaning to go — thanks for the suggestion/reminder!

      • Interesting. I was thinking a tour of the Brewmasters Castle and then a walk towards the monuments. Hillwood House could be an option though.

    • My guests always love the Library of Congress – it is stunning. Great Falls is another favorite, if you have a car. A walk and a meal at Anglers Inn is always nice.

Hillwood and Dumbarton Oaks in Georgetown have fabulous gardens – guests always like them. I like the gardens much better than touring the inside of the houses on a nice spring day.

Arboretum I find best for guests who don’t love to walk – you can drive around to see stuff. Went there with guests to see the cherries there earlier this week. Not as great for walking, because it is so spread out you don’t get the sense you’ve seen much of it on foot. With the exception of the hill trails with all the azaleas, which aren’t mostly in bloom until next month, and the Asian gardens trails, which are more like real hiking. Doing the Hillwood and Dumbarton Oaks gardens, you can walk around and see everything, which seems more satisfying.

Eastern Market visit and walk around lovely Capitol Hill is always a hit.

    • Bluebells should be at peak bloom this weekend, there are lots along Billy Goat trail parts B & C – also in Rock Creek park along the trail that goes north along the creek from picnic area #10 (once you cross the bridge look for the side trail to the left that runs right beside the creek. The main trail is also lovely, but the bluebells are by the creek.)

    • I always like to drink wine with my feet in the Sculpture Garden fountain.
National Geographic Museum, then assorted things in Dupont, maybe Woodrow Wilson’s house or drink at the Quill.
I don’t know if there are still tickets, but Lincoln’s Cottage seems like it would be pretty convenient to you.

      • I read “I always like to drink wine with my feet” and thought “WHAAAH??” before seeing the rest of the sentence. 🙂

      • I do want to get to the Lincoln cottage at some point. I’ll check into that. Trying to stay in the city, and keep it walkable between points (as much as possible), so the Wilson House seems like a good option as well.

  • Rant: I’ve missed popville now that spring break is over
Rant: crazy admin up my butt for stupid crap
Rave: one of my babies told me that one day I’ll be a great teacher one day
Question: are we doing popville karaoke again?

  • Pedicure season!
Every year, my toe nails are discolored and ugly at the end of the summer, from the nail polish. Is there a good base coat that I could bring with me to the salon, to protect my nails and keep them pretty, even after a summer of polish?

  • Rave: I met Pablo Raw in person last night! He’s so nice! AND he did me a huge favor too. I owe you one.
Rave: Meetup group success again. Hungout with two of the guys after the show, and we really bonded talking about music and dating.
Rant: Last guy I dated & who ghosted on me came up to me drunk after calling my name out loud multiple times and saying “you don’t have to ignore me!” Literally reached out and grabbed me to talk. We talked. You liked me. You didn’t like certain things about me. You still want me. You can’t find a better/prettier/cooler girl. Your loss. Build a bridge. Thanks for the free drink.
Rave/Rant: Pablo claims the guy was escorted out of the show. So sad.
Rave: I adopted a dog, and I pick her up from Wash Humane next week. Pug Pomeranian and something else mix. She’s a cutie.

    • Anonynon

LOL I love these stories….you can’t make this stuff up. Good job standing your ground, being respectful but not giving into his games.

      • I’ll give it to this guy props for giving me stories to share. Not the first time he’s been escorted out of a venue or restaurant either. I know how to pick em.

    • Hooray on your new dog! Pictures? Encouraging stories about meetups – giving me courage to try them. Extra awesome that you put down boundaries with Ghost Guy and kept them!

      • Meetups can be hit or miss. I lucked out and found a good group of people. One guy has been in it for years and agrees that our group has good people. I’m no longer nervous meeting new people.

    • Congrats on adopting! Sounds like a cute pup. Please post photos on Animal Fix 🙂

    • epric002

yay adopted pup! tell us more please, and def do animal fix. congrats!

      • Once I get her settled, I’ll submit her for Animal Fix. She needs to get spayed and the works done at Wash Humane. I was the first person to see her, and I had to have her. She’s pants a lot when she’s excited so cute She’s fluffy too. Can’t believe she was found late at night wandering around DC alone.

    • Was that the Priests show? I thought I saw Pablo there.
Rant/Revel: It occurs to me this was at least the fifth Priests show in DC in the last six months and yet I still wish their schedules would allow them to play more often.

      • YES! It was the Priests show! I’ve seen Priests play 3 times this year, and I swear they get better every time.

    • Pablo Raw

Very nice to meet you too! sorry I had to leave early, looking forward to future concerts!

    • was it the guy in the blue hat?

  • Andie302

Rant: Popville has been giving me a hard time lately on my work computer!
Rave: Happy Birthday popville birthday triplets 🙂
    Rave: Friday
Rave: We are adopting a new puppy! One of Mocha’s puppies appeared to be blind. He’s not, but he’s visually impaired and my sister-in-law will not sell him. She offered him to us. I’m thrilled that Mocha will have some company after our move (because roommates dog has been great with her), the puppy will have his mother for guidance, and he will only have to get used to a pretty limited space.
Rave: My sister-in-law is also a boss at house training her puppies, so he’ll arrive 90% of the way there.
Rave: We are naming him Radar.
Rant: That ESPN reporter who went mean girl on the cashier. I’m pretty sure that cashier hates her job as much as you hate her for towing your car – but it only made her look bad to speak to someone like that. Yuck
Rant: Why is it not 5pm already? I am hoping the weather holds out to go to the Nats game tonight.
Rave: Making a delicious cheesecake for Accounterings brother’s birthday. I feel like I got high honors to be in charge of the birthday dessert! Now to not screw it up after being out and about tonight.

    • Prince Of Petworth

Can you email me what problems you are having? Maybe upgrade your browser if you’re using an old one? Sorry!

congrats on your puppy adoption, and kudos for taking one with special needs. also- animal fix!

    • I didn’t realize Mocha had been bred and had puppies — do you have cute photos we can see? 🙂
So you are keeping Mocha as well as her visually impaired pup? (Wasn’t she technically your brother’s dog?)

      • Andie302

Yes – it was always planned that after she’s done breeding my brother will get her fixed and give her to me. I think she has one more litter after this, but they’ll give her one heat as a break, so that’ll be in about a year. I will definitely put in a picture to the animal fix asap. We just agreed last night to take him, but we can’t pick him up until 5/1 (with Mocha).

    • She was so so soooo nasty!! I understand it sucks to have your car towed and people lose their temper, but sheesh did she have to go that low? Unfortunately I think she showed her true colors. You should check out her facebook and all the comments left under her profile photo.

    • OMG Radar what a perfect name 🙂

Rave: I’m not only attending the Nats game tomorrow, but I will be part of it!

Rave: Awesome time at Kaluha Cult Night party last night. Free drinks, snacks and they screened Point Break.

Rant: Kahlua is not a beverage one should drink multiple cocktails of. Good Lord I am feeling it this morning.

  • Rave: Friday – and a sunny weekend
Rave: Ready for a long run on Saturday and then a continued taper till second spring marathon.
Rant: Kind of worried that two in two weeks may have been a poor choice
Rave: Great show at Gypsy Sally’s last night – love Hackensaw Boys

  • Rave: Got my creeping phlox plants into the ground last night.
Rave: It looks like one of my azaleas is about to bloom. (The others don’t seem as far along, maybe because they’re in a slightly different location.)
Rave: I noticed last night that one of my irises looks like it’s going to flower! (I’d acquired a bunch of irises from the Craigslist free section about a year ago, and was disappointed because last year they had great-looking foliage but no flowers.)
Rant: No sign of daffodils from the bulbs I planted in containers and put on the back deck.
    Rave: No mosquitoes… yet.

    • Emmaleigh504

Gardens, such joy and heart break.
Rant: only my Bucks County Magenta violets have returned this year, but it has not bloomed. None of the other native violets have come up. And the 2 fancy sweet violets I had have not come up. I’m still crossing my fingers that some of my fancy sweet violet seeds will sprout, but I’m starting to get dejected.
Rave: zinnias and cosmos have sprouted, orange mint came back and some other stuff I don’t know the name of.

      • Are there perennials that grow from seeds, or are all seed-based flowers annuals?
(I don’t know anything about violets.)
I scored a box of zinnia seeds from the Dollar Tree not long ago. Not sure where to plant them, though. Sometimes my eyes are bigger than my stomach (well, my planting space) when it comes to gardening. 🙂

        • Emmaleigh504

violets are perennials, some of the other stuff that I forgot the name of came from seeds too. The cosmos and zinnias are annuals. If I had a yard I’d have a big section of meadow with all the wildflowers I love.

          • Emmaleigh504

oh and I just realized that I haven’t seen any of my soap wort emerge. It’s also a perennial from seed. tarnation.

    • Gardening-related rant I forgot: “Volunteer” seedlings from the golden raintree that’s a street/treebox tree next door. I HATE that godforsaken tree. Its volunteers aren’t weeds per se, but I don’t want them and they are sprouting EVERYWHERE. They don’t even need to get under the landscaping fabric; they are perfectly happy to sprout in the mulch.
I think next year I am going to get my 9-foot ladder out, put it on the sidewalk, and try to cut down the twigs that hold the seed pods before they have a chance to fall.

  • Rant: at the office on a Friday
Rave: it’s actually warm in here for once and my boss is buying us all lunch
Rave: new metallic gold Keds for regular use and outdoor dancing
Rant: it’s been so long since I sewed that I can’t remember the genius place I decided to store my sewing scissors and sewing gauge.

  • Rave: Birthday and amazing friends, coworkers, and family. 🙂
Rave: Such a gorgeous day! And the weekend looks to be great as well!
Rant: Absolutely CRAAAAZY day at work. @______@

  • Rant: My lousy next-door neighbors got a German Shepard puppy, now a year old, that they NEVER walk. They only let it out in the tiny row-house backyard. Yesterday they had a new fence installed (yeah, thanks for not giving me a heads-up on that!) that is like a prison wall so the poor dog can’t even see the world anymore.

Revel: Foster kittens! It is funny how loud the teeny tiny ones are – slurping their food, stomping around like little camels. I also have a Tuxedo with the most mesmerizing golden eyes (and great personality.) Check them out on Craigslist – “Kitten-Palooza” – if you don’t want to click the link. http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/doc/pet/4979235199.html

    • epric002

holy crap, how can you have a year old puppy that you never walk?! do they exercise it some other way, or do they just leave it outside all the time? an un-exercised year old dog would drive me NUTS!

Random: So on a scale of 1 to crazy…..let me know what you think
Rave: A girl showed up on a dating app I used (it is one where I am not sure if I see them they definitely see me). Basically this girl popped up and took my breath away….its kind of like someone read my mind exactly what my type is and thankfully i found her.
Rant: Still not sure if she saw me, or if she swiped ‘no’ already (since we haven’t been connected yet)
Rave: I did a little FB stalking about found her…I have been asked out by girls via FB and don’t think its creepy (but i know there are double standards that exist in society).
TLDR: Found the girl of my dreams on a dating app, not sure if we will get connected, should I message her on FB since I feel so strongly about there being a connection?

    • Are there any commonalities you can use as an in-road? If I had nothing in common with someone, and they asked me to on FB, I may be a bit leery. Why not message her through the app?

      • Anonynon

I can only message her on the app if she liked me also, but the thing is I am not sure exactly how the app works….if i see her does that mean she saw me also? And all i know is she likes dogs and has hipster glasses and the perfect hair bun. I am just really intrigued…although I do have ADD when it comes to falling for girls for little to no reason (hopeless romantic)

    • That sounds creepy AF, bro

      • Anonynon

I appreciate the feedback 🙂 I don’t know…not trying to be creepy just would like to meet her. Maybe its a bit of a stretch

    • Okay, but I am not the best person in this situation b/c 1. I am taken/haven’t dated in awhile 2. lesbian. However, I have been messaged by guys on FB in the past and maybe it’s because number 2, but I HATED IT, found it annoying, and made me think they were wusses. Now maybe I am confused, but why wouldn’t you just message her on the dating app? You can’t because you might not be a match? Lastly, I would not put a lot of eggs in the “girl of your dreams” basket based on a photo on a dating app, but hey that’s just me.

    • Emmaleigh504

If she saw you and swiped no then she’s gonna think you are uber creepy. If she just hasn’t seen you on the dating app yet, there is still a strong likelihood that she will think you are creepy, but probably just creepy not uber creepy.

      • Anonynon

Hahah fair enough…this is why I should probably just delete these apps in the first place, its always just a little creepy. Who knows maybe she will see my profile and ‘like it’, I will hold off on the FB message.

        • It’s not creepy if you just message the people you match with.

        • Emmaleigh504

If you have to ask yourself “Is this creepy?” it is. Stick with the app and see what happens, maybe y’all will get matched up.

          • And since she likes dogs, maybe changing his pic to one with a cute puppy will increase his odds. 🙂

          • Agreed with Emilie.
IMO, it’s one thing to feel a “connection” with someone you’ve met in real life. But the OP is claiming a “connection” before any interaction has even taken place. That in itself is a little creepy-sounding… just step back and let it play out.

      • LOL, pretty much spot on description. It’s pretty creepy no matter how you slice it.

    • skj84

Do.Not.Messege.Her. Sorry, but unless you have interacted with her in person it’s creepy.

      • This. I had to deliver this message a couple times to a friend who is in the dating game. You don’t cyber-stalk strangers and then reach out to them on social media. It is creepy.

    • JayKay

I think patience is the name of the game here. If you liked her sooner or later you will show up on her feed and then she can decide. It may take time depending on how often she uses said app and there is always the possibility she swiped no. If she swiped no that’s that. Contacting her on another social site will not be well received if indeed she swiped no. Just my 2¢.

    • Sorry, no. That’s creepy. Message her through the app if she likes you back.

Also how can you have found the “girl of your dreams” that you have never seen or spoken to her real life? It seems a bit niave.

      • Anonynon

I exaggerated a bit…it was just a very strong feeling of attraction at first sight (through my phone). As i said before..i can’t message her on the app unless she likes me first. The app has her first and last initial i just searched it in fb and found it in about 10 seconds. I agree I am not going to message her, but we have to draw the line someone about being creepy. Everything is creepy if you really think about it….sure maybe I am naive. Life is about taking chances though right?

  • Pablo Raw

Rave: Concert last night was great and I got to meet LA
Rantish: I didn’t bring my camera
Rave: I am ok, I didn’t die or have any bad symptoms for not photographing the show, but in my mind I was composing shots all the time.
Rave: I need to take photos of that woman.

    • Take photos of Katie from Priests, you mean? You should check out her always-entertaining instagram feed too. She’s also just about the nicest person in the world.

    • Nice meeting you! You should follow Priests and see when they’re playing in DC.. I imagine Katie looks amazing in photos.

  • Rave: Friday! And a beautiful one to boot.
Rave: Tomorrow is supposed to be even better and I have a packed schedule: friend’s bday brunch, hopefully convincing them to brave the crowds for the Earth Day Concert, and then birthday party later that night.
Rant: Got dockblocked three times in the last two days at my closest CaBi station. Might be time to buy my own set of wheels.

  • Emmaleigh504

Garden question: can you bonsai something like a maple tree or a dogwood or cherry? I need a wee tiny deciduous something that gets no more than 2-3 feet tall.

    • Yes, and I’m sure there are volumes written on how to do it. Have you been to the arboretum? They have one of everything in their bonsai collection, seems like. Definitely maples and dogwoods. Wouldn’t swear to cherries, but I think so.

      • Emmaleigh504

excellent. I’ll have to take a trip out there for inspiration.

      • They even have a ginko! It’s adorable.

      • Emmaleigh504

ok now that I’ve done some poking around on the interent I have to decide if I’m going to start from scratch or buy an already bonsaied tree. Then I just have to pick the variety. Kind of love the idea of a ginko, but I don’t want the smell in my apartment. I did find a cherry tree for less than $100.

        • From what I hear, bonsai-ing a tree is HARD — and that includes maintaining a tree that someone has already started off as a bonsai.

    • GiantSquid

Why not get a dwarf Japanese Maple?
