(Former) Mayor Vincent Gray said DC Streetcar expected to be ready for passengers the week of January 19th

On Friday (then) Mayor Gray issued one of his final press release:

“Following a series of meetings between District Department of Transportation (DDOT) officials and State Safety Oversight, Mayor Vincent C. Gray said the DC Streetcar is expected to be ready for passenger use the week of January 19, 2015.

“DDOT and District safety inspectors continue to work together to open the DC Streetcar to passenger service. Safety continues to be our top priority. And while we know that the first day of service is going to be a great day for District residents, we don’t want to rush for the sake of rushing,” said Mayor Gray. “With that in mind, though, I am now delighted to report that the week of January 19, 2015 is the target for getting H Street up to full speed.”

  • Thanks be to heaven! Now I can pay money to ride 4 blocks to get me from kind-of-near where I was coming from to not-too-far from where I was going! Great spending DC!

    • It would have made more sense had the original phase Union Station to Benning Rd Metro

    • The fact that it stops so far away from the Union station metro still makes me sad/angry/annoyed.

Isn’t the first stop right behind Union Station? I usually walk to H Street from the bus bay in Union Station. The staging area for the Street car is a block away.

        • I think it’s still a long walk to the actual Metro entrance on the other side of the lot…not in terms of walks in general, but in terms of seamless-transportation. You have to get off at Union Station metro and walk like 12 minutes to the hopscotch bridge where the streetcar station is. And then wait there for it.

Not sure if they are still coming up with solutions to fix it, or if there is a shortcut?

          • I agree it is very unfortunate that it doesn’t stop closer to the metro (yet), but it really is only about a 5 minute walk from the metro platform. That being said, needing to walk through the jammed station and through the parking garage is REALLY not ideal. I hope they continue to work to fix it.

          • 12 minutes?
You just go through the garage. 5 minutes, more like. You can walk a mile in 12 minutes.

    • The people who live off of Benning Road will be more thankful for an additional transportation option than you are, oh entitled one.

      • We have the X2 and the X9, so this really doesn’t give us anything we didn’t have before. And at least the buses go somewhere instead of ending on an isolated bridge in the middle of nowhere.

      • Yep!

Only a f**kboi would call Benning to Union Station nowhere. Union Station is the busiest transit station in the whole region!

Why I do have the sudden urge to sing the lyrics to the Simpsons’ “O Streetcar!” episode?

New Or-le-ans! home of pirates, drunks and whores, New Or-le-ans, tacky overpriced souvenir stores…

  • Technically, Gray isn’t the “former” mayor until Bowser is sworn in. He still has some days left…
