New Kelly Towles Mural in Shaw

7th and P Street, NW

A new Kelly Towles original on 7th Street:

Word on the street is that the former variety store (closed last month) and the former wing house (closed for year) is slated for demo at some point.

  • Big changes are coming for the whole block. Per the ANC 6E newsletter:

Commissioner Kevin Chapple will host a Single Member District Community Meeting to discuss the transformation of the long-neglected east side of the 1500 block of 7th Street that is currently underway. The Laundromat has closed and will soon be occupied by a new business. The three small buildings at the south end of the block have been sold for new development. The Dollar Store and tax office will transition into new businesses, and a Mexican restaurant will be located at the corner of 7th and Q Streets. Representatives of Sandoval Restaurants, Compass Coffee, Ivy & Coney, Warrenton Group and Valor Development will present their plans and answer community questions regarding their businesses and new development. The meeting will be held on Thursday, October 16, 2014 at the Kennedy Recreation Center, 1401 7th Street, NW, at 7:00 PM.

  • I met the artist doing the mural in front of the market. He was a part of the controversial daily show redskins segment that made the news recently. The mural is part of an installation for this weekend’s art walk.

  • Oh lord that monstrosity can’t be painted over or covered with development fast enough!!

  • Ooh, DC Eater is reporting that Compass Coffee is open now! Can’t wait to try it!

    • Went in today – it’s a really great addition to the neighborhood. We now have two non-starbucks spaces with good coffee! Azi’s is still great for coffee and they have solid food too. Compass has more of that trendy vibe your average shawbro is in to, and their biscuit game is top-notch.

It’s a shame I still see the starbucks so packed in the mornings – hopefully people realize there’s better, local options around.
