LAYC Neighborhood Open House and Coat Drive:

“The Latin American Youth Center (LAYC) will host a #GivingTuesday Neighborhood Open House on Tuesday, December 3, 2013, from 5 to 8 p.m. at LAYC’s anchor site in Columbia Heights, 1419 Columbia Road, NW, Washington, DC, 20009.

#GivingTuesday, which follows the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, starts the holiday giving season with a global day dedicated to charitable giving, harnessing the power of social media and the generosity of people around the world to bring about real change in their communities.

#GivingTuesday celebrates and encourages people to give their time, resources, talents, and social media voice to a new kind of philanthropy that is about social purpose and collaboration for a better world.
LAYC’s #GivingTuesday Neighborhood Open House will kick off its annual Give Warmth Coat Drive and will feature live holiday music, festive refreshments, and games. LAYC programs will be on-hand to share volunteer opportunities throughout the year.

The event is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to donate new or gently used and laundered winter clothing, such as coats, scarves, and mittens. Tickets and more information are available at laycgivingtuesday.eventbrite.com.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
