Washington Pizza Reopens at 14th and Randolph – Indian Food Coming Soon

1353 Randolph Street, NW

“Dear PoPville,

I stopped by the Washington Pizza on Randolph and 14 last night. Its under new ownership and they have an incredible deal of $5 for a large one topping pizza and a soda. The new owners are a little depressed about how slow business is. The pizza was great. Also, they will be opening the other side of it in a couple of weeks and will be selling the Indian food.”

Looks like a typical carry-out joint to me. Is the pizza really that good?

  • I’m not a restaurateur by any means, but it occurred to me that perhaps you might serve some dishes from your native Pakistan? As opposed to franks and beans for example.

  • Hey put that place in DCUSA I bet you that place would be more packed than a Double Slice Place on 18th street.

Glad to see these guys back – they were always my secret delivery weapon. The pizza was surprisingly good, in a thicker-than-NY-but-not-deep-dish style. (Think unsucky Domino’s.)

  • Feel bad for Abdul Aziz, former owner. I used to live around the block from WashPizza and formed a good relationship with Abdul. He used to be a senior official in the afghan telecomms ministry and his family fled after the taliban uprising. He received his bachelors and masters degrees from universities in Germany and he was the father of 5 kids, all of whom (I think) went on to college in the states. He was always very friendly and provided free drinks to my wife and I, and he was always eager to see if any of his customers who worked for the federal government or any of the big contractor companies would look at his resume to see if he could get back into the international development field. While there is better pizza/carry out joints in the area Abdul really made this place feel warm and inviting (yes I understand he painted over the mural).
I hope he was able to retire and spend more time with his family.

  • it could be that not many people want to buy pizza from a place that also sells wings, gyros and indian food, unless that place happens to be a wegman’s.

  • Wait, people are happy about this but griping about Manny & Olga’s over on H Street? lol

  • I live around the corner and have been really looking forward to an Indian/Pakistani option within steps. I’ve popped in a bunch of times and they’ve kept telling me “next week, next week” when I ask when they’ll start serving Indian/Pakistani. I’m sure business will pick up if they get that ball rolling.

+1 I popped in a few weeks back hoping the Pakistani menu was up (it wasn’t, nor was there a soul around, including staff) but when it is, I’ll be there.

  • did this place spray paint over the mural in the background (see first photo)? kinda shitty to destroy a mural like that… a sign might have been the better way to go. -10 cool points

    • Yep. Pretty shitty if you ask me. Plus, I’m not even really sure that’s in any way a valid parking area. You have to take a sharp left from the alley on Randolph and basically drive on the sidewalk to get to it.

I like having Indian up there! Nice!

  • Live a half block away, and have spent many a night munching on Abdul’s pizza. While the place wasn’t much to look at, he had the recipe down–chewy, thick crust and lots of cheese. Hope the news guys make it the same way!
