Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks and no need to correct people’s grammar. This is a place to vent and/or celebrate things about daily life in DC.

**WARNING!** A confirmed West Nile Virus vector was discovered at Ft. McNair Army Base. Please take precautions to protect yourselves against mosquitoes! If you live in Southwest, please let your neighbors know. We have a number of elderly residents in this neighborhood and at least one became seriously ill due to West Nile last year.

  • Rant: waiting to cross 16 th street two people decide to cross against the red don’t walk light. Not surprisingly, two cars come down the road with little time to stop. One of the two pedestrians grabs the other (who was walking moreslowly) and basically pushes her out of the way of one of the oncoming cars. She yells “STOP TOUCHING ME! STOP TOUCHING ME!” You know, instead of thank you for potentially saving my life.

Rant: really folks, I waited for the walk light and got to the other side about 15 seconds after you. Is your life really worth that?

Rave: the other ped was watching out and willing to slow down to push/pull the lady out of the way, instead of just running and leaving her there to get squashed

Rave: living in a walkable city

  • Any word on when/if the new cafe (as previously reported here) at 511 Florida Ave. NW is opening?

  • We need a new expression: “Give me the THREE-ONE-ONE”
It will refer to asking for details about the laziness and incompetence of DC government.
Had a bulk trash pick-up. Took an additional 2 phone calls, and 9 days after the originally scheduled collection date. Fun.

  • Rant: Wonder what happened on 8th/Taylor St today, helicopter, big police presence?

  • Any word on the status of culture coffee on Kennedy st?

  • Has anyone else had trouble with confusing parking signs or insane parking practices? I was ticketed for parking next to a pole that has four parking-related signs on it.

    1. No Standing or Parking 7am-9:30am or 4-6:30 pm Monday-Friday. OK. This would make me think that parking on Saturdays and Sundays is OK. But wait, there’s another sign right below that.
    2. No Parking (a P with a slash through it). Hmmm….well, that’s confusing.
    3. Right below the P with a slash through it, there’s another sign that says that Zone 1 sticker holders are exempted and street sweeping is on Tuesdays 7am-7pm.
    4. And below that, there’s yet another sign indicating that there’s no parking, except for on Sundays.

I took all of that to mean that I could park on Sundays with my Zone 1 sticker. Nope. I got a ticket.

Additionally, after parking on another street where “emergency no parking” signs were put up after I parked at 8pm (and my ticket was issued at 7am), I was towed to a new location. Fine. But the tow truck drivers dropped my car in one of those streets with the mess of confusing signs, and then I was ticketed AGAIN for parking illegally (e.g. the tow truck driver dropped me in a spot that appeared to be fine on Sundays, but was apparently a full-time no parking zone.).

    Anyone else having these problems?

Rave – Had the best weekend EVER in NYC with my daughter, her boyfriend and my partner. Life really does go on and it sure feels good to be a modern family!
Rant – Short weeks always suck – hope it goes quickly.
