Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks. I’ll open this thread every morning at 10am.

  • I am enjoying the cool weather without having to use my air conditioner.

Rant: It’s looks like Mayor Vincent Gray and Kwame Brown might be going down like former Ward 5 D.C. Councilmember Harry Thomas, Jr. This is the worse D.C. Council since the 1973 Home Rule Act.

    • I would put the Gray and Brown bit as a rave – can’t happen soon enough!

      • AteofDC, you are correct; that should have been a rave, not a rant. I was just waking up this morning, when I posted the first comment. LOL

  • Rave: My grandfather made it safely through the pacemaker surgery and goes home today, feeling much better!!

Rave: Buddy from high school making it big- just got the male lead in a HUGE Broadway musical. So psyched for him!

  • Rant: Talking to my friend last night, he told me two guys he knows were jumped by 4 guys who got out a SUV and proceeded to beat the crap out of them. What, is it open season or something?

  • Rave: Boyfriend and I submitted our first pre-approval request for a mortgage! Terrified and excited!!!!!

Rave: Looking forward to a 4.5 day weekend at the shore with my parents

Rave: Less than two weeks until Costa Rica!

Rant: Second 16th Street Heights on Mayor Gray rant. I was really hoping that recall effort was going to go somewhere…

I know you’re not asking for advice, but after going through the buying process twice, I do have a small word of advice, as it’s something I wish I had really tried to do. Try to hold on to that excited feeling. I’ll tell you right now- the entire process won’t be perfect. You’ll just miss out on a place you love. You’ll have an issue with paperwork that you will have to submit multiple times or trying to get mortgage people get back to you. Or the realtor will be kind of a jerk. All sorts of minor things. As long as you don’t let those things really get to you (which I struggled with), and know that it will all work out fantastically in the end, what you will be left with is a great and exciting experience to think about for years to come. 🙂 Good luck!

      • Thanks, me 🙂 Knowing that the DC buying market is pretty skimpy right now, I’m sure there will be bidding wars, lost opportunities, and compromises to make. I’m so sick of renting from an awful management company (Borger) that I can’t wait to buy something and take this next step with my guy!

  • Rant: This weather makes my hair look like a birds nest. Don’t want to spend money on expensive “humidity blocking” products that probably don’t work. I guess I will just wear my hair up until September.

    • If you’re referring to the Kerastase products, which are known to manage curly or unruly hair, especially in humid climates, I’m pretty sure that Suave has a product with Keratin at about 1/10th of the Kerastase product-line cost. A possibility if you want to try to manage your curly hair during the humid months. Good luck!

      • I was not referring to that line specifically, but I feel that pretty much every brand has their version of humidity controlling goop.

I’ve tried just about all of those “weather-proofing” shampoos, conditioners, and products out there. They either weigh hair down with silicone or just otherwise don’t work. (My hair is thick, too curly to have those nice, beachy waves, but not curly enough to actually be nice and curly- it is a disaster.) About a week and a half ago, I bought the Aveeno Shine shampoo and conditioner. I wash my hair every other day. After about 3 washes, I could really tell a difference, and I am actually having a good hair day today, even though I was spritzed with rain on my way in to work. While it’s more expensive than Suave, it’s not nearly as expensive as the salon brands. I highly suggest it!

  • Emmaleigh504

Rant: Attending a retirement party for a colleague today. This is only a rant because I am jealous.

Rave: Had a nice little chat with some guy from my hometown on metro this morning.

Rant: Grandpa may disown me because I enjoy the travesty that is Benedict Cumberbatch as a modern Sherlock Holmes.

Rave: Grandpa still loves me even if I’m disowned.

  • Rave: This NOW protest! Almost as big as the Million Man March!

    • Looks about as big as most of the Tea Party protests in DC over the past year. Of course, minus the cameras that usually outnumber the actual protesters 5 to 1.

    • Rant: My mom’s husband sits in his chair and listens to RL all day every day. It’s literally killing him while it destroys his mind at the same time.

  • Rant: Anxiety and emotions have again gotten the best of me, and I’m really pessimistic about the follow-up from the interview on Friday. There is no point in being optimistic because so many opportunities that I thought I blew out of the water ended up falling through, so why be optimistic about this one?

Rant: Did an absolutely awful job of trying to control spending. Highest credit card bill I’ve ever had, and it’s not looking too great for next month either. And this is AFTER I cut going out to eat and entertainment expenses almost entirely.

Rave: Going home to the beach for a break this weekend to visit my parents. Visiting home is always cathartic.

  • Rant: Allergies! I’m miserable, and since I don’t get an air conditioner until June, I’m forced to keep my windows open. I’ve been taking Zyrtec everyday since March, I use nasal spray, I take decongestants, and yet every day I wake up with crusted over eyes, a sore throat, and fluid literally dripping from my ears. I know exactly what my triggers are (had allergy test done a few years ago) and I know I’m going to be miserable until the grass pollen goes away. Really can’t wait to have health insurance again so I can get shots again!

  • rave: HUGE win for the nj devils last night. loved to seem them playing so well.
rave: testing out a lot of new healthy recipes and really enjoying them.

  • GiantSquid

Rant: Mr. Squid is really depressed; his work situation is bumming him out. My work isn’t all that great either but I’m trying to be there for him and cheer him up. It’s rough when he looks like a sad puppy when he has to leave for work in the morning and I’m pretty sure it’s messing with his tummy.

Rave: Going to plan an overnight at a B&B on the beach for us to get away, even if for just 24 hours.

Rave: Boss is away this week.

Rant: Have to work on Memorial Day.

  • I didn’t get the job I wanted, and desperately needed. The hiring manager said a million complimentary things when he called to tell me. If I’m so great, and if I would really be “an asset to the company” and if you’d really be “lucky to have me”, why am I not filling out an I-9 today?
For some reason, all the flattery depresses me more. He seemed to genuinely like me and consider me eminently qualified. Which means that I don’t have a prayer with anyone less impressed.
If you see me sitting by a metro station with a cup, please be generous. I’ve really tried to find work.

    • Ugh. I feel you. I have had interviewers tell me sooo many good things and yet I’m still sitting here with no offer. “We really like you!” “You and I will work so well together!” “We love your broad experience” “It is so great to work here!”

After a while I don’t trust anyone when they say crap like this. If you think I’m so great, show me an offer.

    • I know what you mean – I once got a rejection call that was so flattering I was wondering if the guy was going to ask me out on a date instead. He didn’t, so I ended up with no job and no date and just empty compliments worth zero.

      • Original anonymous job-seeker here, and that made me laugh out loud. I’d totally have gone on a date with this guy, he was so nice! But I’d much, much rather have the job.

  • Rave/Rant: My next online grad school class starts in a week.

  • Rant: I snapped at my boss this morning. Online. I think it’s time to hear whether or not I got that overseas job. So ready to go.

  • Rant and Rave: Here is something to make you all laugh. Gotta love DC. So screwed up.

  • Does anyone else on here watches NBC’s ‘Grimm’? I enjoy watching this series and I hate the series finale ended last Friday. What will I now do on Friday nights? I am too old to party and go to bars. LOL

    • I love Grimm! Really sad it’s over until next year. I still want to know who the Captain is, what Hitler was and wtf is up with his mom!? If you’re looking for something similar try the Canadian show ‘Lost Girls’. The first two seasons rock.

      • Anonymous, the Captain on NBC’s ‘Grimm’ is some sort of royality and I suspect he too might be a Grimm. If you notice, Nick, the Grimm doesn’t see him as a monster. Wow, the lady last week on ‘Grimm’ is Nick’s mother. I can’t wait until the fall get’s here. Television sucks during the summer months, including Cable premium channels.

        • Yea, I watch it (and LostGirl as well – definitely recommend).

The Hitler thing was about the Coins of Zakynthos – that the coins gave him the charismatic power he had over people.

The Captain is definitely roayalty – one of the 7 Royal houses… but no clue what that means yet. The reaper bowed to him, and the dude sent by the verrat acknowledged him as such.

          Looking forward to season 2.

          • I too watch the ‘Lost Girl’ and ‘Being Human’. I like Dyson on the ‘Lost Girl’ and I want him to get back with the suckabus.

    • If you have Netflix streaming, might I recommend the Peep Show. It’s genius comedy and there are several seasons to watch.

  • Rant: Had medical testing at 8 a.m. This meant waking up at 5:30 to make sure I got there on time. Thankfully, as part of the test they asked me to try and sleep. Umm, okay!

Rant: Stressful stuff at work and I’m not good at prioritizing.

Rant: Last night my roommates basically told me that I have to move out by September 1st. They all want to move out and think that if we all leave then our slumlord will let us break the lease. Granted, I’ve been thinking about moving…but mainly because of THEM. Oh, and they think that *I* should be the one to talk to the slumlord about this because he likes me the best.

Rave: While I definitely don’t love my physical job, I love the place and the people. This makes it worth getting up every day and makes the crappy job much better.

Rave: Watched the first two episodes of Dawson’s Creek last night. Awwe, teenage angst and romance! And it gave me a good dream.

Revel: Marriage license obtained – wedding in less than three weeks!

Revel: Got the engagement photo website today

Rant: Pictures were taken a month ago – we were supposed to have them in two weeks

Rant: We don’t have the digital copies of photos yet (they’ll mail in 3-5 days), so we’re still not able to finish up some of the projects for the wedding

Revel: The pictures turned out great

Additional revel: Bowling at EEOB tonight!

Additional rant: Said bowling is because awesome co-worker is leaving for the west coast.

  • Rant-began new medicine that is making being at work exceptionally difficult, and accomplishing anything virtually impossible.

Rant-roommate co-opted the iron this A.M. and am now feeling too wrinkley to walk out and get coffee.

Rant-am at that stage in a breakup when my certainty that he will resume contact is waning and there’s really no hope for a future.

Rave-running after work to my newly downloaded Rhythm Nation album

  • rant and revel: I got a job offer today!! Dreamjob! However, the new potential job would pay me 15k less than what I would earn if I stay put in the job that gives me no fulfillment. I want to leave but I am overly concerned about how I will possibly make ends meet (without parental assistance) in the future. The cost of living in DC is so high!!

    • ughh. congrats on the offer, but don’t you hate that?! why are dream jobs always the lowest paying. hmph.
