Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks. I’ll open this thread every morning at 10am.

  • Rave – Annie’s Ace!!! so awesome to have that store.
Rave – Saw and heard a pileated woodpecker this morning

  • rant: the construction going on at 14th & constitution, ruining my running route! does anyone know what is going on there? There are signs for an museum going in by 2015, but they wouldn’t put that in the middle of the mall … would they?

    rave: the weather forecast!

    • National Museum of African American History and Culture. I believe the president et all are speaking today for the start of the building.

    • Yeah, its the National Museum of African American History. All that open space around the Washington Monument will be gone in another 30 years now that we have to build museums and monuments to anything and everything, including every war and armed conflict we’ve ever been in around the world.

      • anything to get rid of the softball players. enough of them don’t care about who they hit with their balls that they have given all of them a bad reputation.

        • Rave: pitchers and catchers reporting!
          Rave: possible Nationals season!
potential Rant: probably Nationals season! 😉

      • This is supposed to be the last museum built on the National Mall.

    • It’s the groundbreaking ceremony, with the Pres, tomorrow, so all the construction you see on the site is temporary. It’s pretty substantial; I wonder how much it all cost? But I suppose it’s all part of a building a major museum, and it’s good that they’re finall ygetting under way. This morning there were temporary no parking signs all around there – I think the time listed was 6AM – 3PM so probably wise to avoid that area all day if possible; traffic could be as bad as it gets aorund there during the National Christmas Tree lighting.

  • Rave – 3 day weekend!

Question – where can I find a paczki around here? 🙂

  • Rave: Feeling plain awesome today.
Rant: Except for the pain from having taken a nasty spill down a flight of stairs the other day. The bruises are colorful.
Rave: Annie’s Ace and four-day weekends.

  • Rant – the “first” rush hour at 3:00PM. I am just noticing how congested the roads, Starbucks, grocery stores, you name it, are getting. There is no “off” time in DC to get things done without a crush of humanity.

Rave – DC has other things going for it.

    • I’ve always considered DC rush hour to start at 3. If I can, I schedule things like dentist appointments in the eye of the hurricane, 9am – 230pm.

I like to imagine the 3pm commuters as people who have large homes way out there (maybe Fredneck or Fredericksville). They have flexible work schedule that allows them to punch in at 6, and they make a decent amount of money, given the cost of living in their locale. Geographic arbitrage. Only downside are the weird hours.

Rave: awesome 3-day weekend in NYC visiting the boyfriend

    Rant: long distance relationships

  • Rant: Doing other people’s busywork.

Rant/Rave: I’m so busy with everything else I do to enrich my life since work does not.

Rave: My 5 year old MacBook is again being resurrected from the grave.

  • Rant: No more paid 3 day weekends until the end of May.

  • anon. gardener

    Rant: having a sad day.
Rave: the early spring weather is mitigating the sadness somewhat. a host of golden daffodils can’t be far off.

    • I’m also having a sad day. It sucks and I’m sorry you’re dealing with it, too. I’m going to go look at some budding flowers and hope that helps.

      • anon. gardener

Thanks, back at you. sometimes you just gotta be sad. Seeing all the signs of spring around definitely helps put things in perspective. I read Robert Frost’s A Prayer in Spring this morning, and the line about “make us happy in the happy bees” made me smile. Looking forward to seeing some happy bees!

  • Rant: After 11 years of being a vegetarian, my body was having serious meat cravings for the past few months.

Revel: After this past weekend, I am no longer a vegetarian. I decided to just take the plunge.

Rave: Having a supportive boyfriend who went several different grocery stores with me while I decided what type of meat to buy. Then, he cooked me meat dishes for lunch and dinner. He’s my rock!

Rant (?): Even though my body is craving it, I have moments of repulsion while eating the meat. It’s a bizarre situation. Any other former vegetarians out there with advice for born-again meateater? 😉

    • Why not stick with seafood? It’s much healthier than any other animal protein. Just make sure it’s sustainable.

Also, why were you vegetarian in the first place? That might help you determine what kind of animals you should be eating?

      • Unfortunately, I never liked seafood. However, after not eating meat for so long, I’m willing to give it a shot. I just need a little bit of a buffer period before I jump into fish.

I became a vegetarian with a friend in high school. It was one of those “If you do it, I’ll do it” things. Yes, I became one of those moral vegetarians as time progressed. So I definitely want to buy lean, cage-free, hormone-free, etc.

    • This happened to my sister when she was pregnant and she never looked back.

    • claire

I’ve always been a meat-eater, but I eat largely vegetarian these days, partly because I feel a bit of repulsion when eating meat that I know is low quality. If that’s the issue for you, there are a decent amount of farms in the area that you can get really high-quality meat from (Truck Patch Farms, for instance, is my source for bacon when the farmer’s markets are open), but it definitely comes at a price. Most Whole Foods meats also meet my standards for a bit cheaper (though still pricey).

  • Rave/Rant: Coming back from a business trip late last night and finding the entire family in my bed (wife and two small kids). The rave is because I love them and missed them. The rant is because I got a terrible night’s sleep.

    • Small kids usually sleep deeply. Give them a hello kiss, then carry them to their own bedroom(s).

Mine still squirm all over at night – i agree it’s hard to sleep when them in the bed.

      • Good call. Next time this happens self help eviction will be alive and well in DC.

      • This is why I give my kids crambien. It’s cranberry juice and ground up Ambien. Those idiots think they’re just drinking juice! I never hear a peep out of them.

  • This is similar to the paczki question – anyone know where I can get a faschnaut today?

  • Emmaleigh504

Rant: Conference call instead of parades.

Rave: My past job training people to use software makes me look way more tech savvy than everyone else in the conference call.

  • claire

Rave: Relaxing three day weekend! It’s always the third day when I really feel the best, get the most done, and feel like I have lots of time for luxurious relaxation.

Rave: Low-key Mardi Gras celebration with roommates tonight.

Rave: Updating my Mint account for the last month or so. I share most of my expenses with my boyfriend (our whole house has a spreadsheet for shared expenses which makes this a lot easier) so I have to manually update my Mint account to get an accurate sense of how much I’m spending on various things.
Rave: I feel like I’m doing pretty well with my spending.
Rant: DC is so expensive – I could be living exactly the same for half the price in so many other cities…

  • Gasoline prices continue to increase and this is causing food prices and other commodities to increase.

  • Rave: My first niece was born yesterday!
Rant: Just found out that she has an infection of some kind and is in the NICU. According to my aunt who is a NICU nurse, it’s not an uncommon thing, but I’m still feeling really nauseous thinking about it.

    • Awwe, I know how you feel. My niece was born 2 months early – it was terrifying! Thankfully everything turned out fine and she’s a smart, healthy 4 year-old. I’m sure your niece will be fine, like your aunt said.

  • Rant: Red light jumping, wrong way down one ways, no lights at night, head phones in, and wearing a helmet cyclist. I guess if you’re going to be stupid, you might as well protect your head.

  • Rant: Wanted to sign up to volunteer for the Cherry Blossom Festival again like I did last year, but they don’t seem to have the same position I did last year, and not many available on Friday. Kinda disappointed.

Rant: Watched all of my TiVo-ed House Hunters episodes from Monday, which all centered around D.C. Except every show was about a couple moving to NoVa or PG County — not actually inside the city!

    • I loathe those episodes.

It’s like the Cities Underground DC when they went to Baltimore and Greenbrier, VA. They could have done Dupont Circle, Congress/congressional buildings, or Georgetown slave quarters instead and have had a much more exciting show.

  • Rant: I noticed this morning that my glasses are broken. It’s such a pain to see the eye doctor and get new ones. At least they’re wearable until the new ones come. I wonder if I can lure @emmaleigh504 downtown on Thursday to help me pick out cute frames.

Rave: I solved a problem for someone at work today and feel really great about it.

Rave: My son’s birthday yesterday was great, and we still have tons of delicious cake left.

Rant: We have TONS of delicious cake left.

Rave: Shrove Tuesday pancake dinner at church tonight.

Rant: The pancake dinner, as delicious as it is, will not be as good as being at my parents’ house in New Orleans today. Bah.

Rant: The ridiculous price for eyeglasses at MyEyeDr. Just got new glasses at Thanksgiving…progressive, polycarbonate, anti-glare, Transitions all of $275 at Costco (plus the $40 co-pay for my eye exam). A friend talked me into going in on a $58 deal Living Social had for MyEyeDr (exam + $225 off glasses). Silly me was thinking I could get away with a similar pair of non-Transitions as a second pair for something like another $50. Nuh uh. *WITH* the discount they wanted $675! Tried haggling a bit but couldn’t do any better than $350 (and that was for what they said was a “basic grade” non-poly lens, whatever the heck that is).

Rave: Costco’s optical. Reasonable prices, great service.
