Major Fire Department Response at the Petworth Metro – Station without Power

Update:

“Power has been restored in the Metro stations which had been affected by a power outage. Yellow Line and Green Line service have now been fully restored.”

“GR/YL (1/2): Preliminary investigation: Problem appears to be related to a “remote terminal unit” that failed IAO Georgia Ave Sta. #wmata”

“GR/YL (2/2): RTUs allow ROCC to remotely control various systems, incl power. Personnel will remain on scene to ensure reliability #wmata”

“Green/Yellow: Train service has been fully restored following earlier power loss. Columbia Heights & Georgia Ave stations reopening.”

A reader reports:

“Huge fire presence at Petworth metro. Three or four fire trucks, at least one ambulance. Guys suiting up and going down into the metro entrance across from CVS. Anyone know what’s up?”

Metro Transit Police tweets:

“MTPD on scene at Georgia Ave working loss of power. Train service temp suspended btwn U St & Fort Totten. Use Red or take bus. #wmata”

Update from Metro Transit Police at 6:50pm:

“MTPD confirming there is one train just outside Georgia Ave station. MTPD & DCFD are on scene and will be addressing this as priority #wmata”

Update 7:28pm:

“MTPD can confirm that DCFD has begun an orderly evacuation of the affected train (no power). Distance is ~100 ft to Georgia Ave Sta #wmata”

Update 8:10pm:

Estimated 500-600 passengers were aboard incident train. No injuries during evacuation. Our thanks, again, to @dcfireems for their efforts.”

From WMATA:

“Currently no cause for power loss. Troubleshooting has begun. (Power Dept cannot troubleshoot during an evac, & that was priority.)”

“GR suspended btwn U St-Ft Totten. Shuttle buses continue in operation serving U St, Columbia Hgts, Georgia Av, Fort Totten. #wmata 9:25p”
