From WMATA:

“Due to current weather and road conditions, Metrobus service is operating on a “moderate” snow service plan, meaning that many Metrobus routes are only operating on major roadways to keep buses off of hilly terrain, narrow side streets and other problem areas.

METROBUS MODERATE SNOW PLAN: CLICK FOR DETAILS AND MAPS

Bus service is experiencing delays due to weather road conditions. Please allow additional time and use extreme caution when traveling.  For your safety, never stand in the roadway while waiting for a bus.  For delay and detour information affecting individual routes, check the bus alerts page or sign up for MetroAlerts.”

Update 2:40pm:

“In the interest of safety given current road conditions, all Metrobus service will continue operating on a “moderate snow plan” for the remainder of the service day. Under the moderate snow plan, service is provided along most major arteries; however, some Metrobus routes do not operate and others are detoured to keep buses off of hilly terrain, narrow side streets and other problem areas.”

From Pentagon City

Thanks to a reader for sending:

“Transferring at Federal Center SW?? From atleast Crystal City and Pentagon City heading into the District, Metro DC printed and displayed huge incorrect station/transfer point maps for the Orange/Blue/silver line.”

Ed. Note: The proper transfer point from blue/orange to green/yellow is at L’Enfant Plaza. Fotten Totten remains my favorite metro signage error.

FRAMES

From WMATA:

“An accused “cell phone flasher” has been arrested by Metro Transit Police in connection with several recent incidents on the Metrorail system.

Metro Transit Police today announced new charges against Steven Andrew Slaughter, 22, of Washington, DC, for alleged lewd acts and an assault that occurred in January.

Starting in mid-January, Metro Transit Police detectives became aware of a series of incidents in which a male subject would approach female passengers on the Metrorail system and show them a lewd photograph of himself on his cell phone screen. In some cases, the suspect would approach victims claiming that he was raising money for a youth organization.

Slaughter was identified using Metro’s high-definition video surveillance footage, as well as witness statements and reports.”

“Dear PoPville,

I got on at Eastern Market, a few minutes after 11 am on Monday morning, 2/3/2014, at my usual door (last door, second to last car) to expedite my travels upon my arrival at my destination. The car was relatively empty and I locked eyes with a young, attractive, well-dressed man upon getting on the train. I noted the look in his eyes. I kept to myself, playing on my phone, until looking up to see what stop we were pulling into when I noticed him stroking himself out of his pants, with his d*ck pointed at me. I didn’t say anything, but I probably physically reacted. I got up and got off the metro since we’d just pulled into Federal Center SW. I tried to snap a photo of him through the window, but he never turned around.

I reported the incident to station manager who called ahead to get the train stopped at the next station. The station manager recommended I not sit in the back of the metro, but closer to the operator in the future, which I get is good advice, but I should be able to sit wherever on the metro and not be at risk. The Station Manager did call ahead to other stations to try to apprehend the perpetrator. I also made a statement to the police. I was disappointed to learn that there are no cameras on the metro cars. I saved Metro PD’s number [202-962-2121] in my phone for the future.

He was young (maybe 25ish), black, wearing a lumberjack, ear flap-style hat and a dark grey or blue wool jacket. He never said anything to me. He never reacted to my reaction to him. He never turned around to see what I was doing after I got off the metro.”

From WMATA:

“Starting Monday, November 4, Metro contractors will begin a five-month project to replace the two entrance escalators on the east side of Connecticut Ave NW.

The existing east-side escalators were installed when the station first opened in 1981, and their reliability has decreased dramatically over time. As such, Metro engineers have determined that a full replacement of the escalators is necessary because rehabilitating the aging units is neither practical nor cost effective in the long term.

The new escalators will be Metro’s tenth and eleventh new escalators installed as part of the massive Metro Forward capital-rebuilding program. Last year, Metro opened new escalators at Foggy Bottom (3) and Dupont Circle’s south entrance (3). And last week, Metro opened the system’s newest escalators at Pentagon Station (3).

The two escalators on the east side of Connecticut Ave will be barricaded for the duration of the project to allow for construction activity that is expected to last until Spring 2014. During this time, riders can enter or exit the station using the escalator, stairs or elevator on the west side of Connecticut Ave NW. The closure of the east entrance is necessary to ensure safety while heavy lifting of escalator segments takes place in a tight workspace. Additionally, by closing this side of the entrance and replacing both escalators at the same time, Metro will be able to complete the project in half the time with crews working two shifts per day.

The Van Ness project will be the first two under a $151 million contact with KONE Corporation to fully replace an additional 128 escalators by 2020, including 14 projects starting by next summer at Bethesda, Columbia Heights, Friendship Heights, Georgia Ave-Petworth, Glenmont, Mt Vernon Sq and Shady Grove.

Metro recently reported that more escalators are in service today than at any point in nearly five years. For the 2nd quarter of the year (April through June), Metro achieved an availability score of 91.9 percent — meaning that more than nine of every ten escalators were in service during operating hours.

In addition to the escalator replacement projects, Metro has already “rehabilitated” to “like new” condition 103 escalators across the system with 33 more to be completed by mid-2014. Rehabilitation projects result in the replacement of all critical parts, including the escalator’s steps, handrails, motors, controllers, chains, and other moving parts.”

Update from @wmata at 6:00pm:

“One of the two WMATA employees injured overnight has been released from hospital.”

From WMATA:

“The investigation into the cause of a fatal overnight construction accident on the Red Line is ongoing. The investigation team, led by Metro’s Chief Safety Officer, has authorized the release of the following facts and preliminary findings:

The incident occurred shortly after midnight, Sunday, October 6, 2013, in a work zone on the outbound (Glenmont direction) track between Union Station and Judiciary Square. The incident location is closer to Union Station, approximately 400 feet from the platform.

Contractors and WMATA employers were performing rail renewal, a process that involves removing old sections of rail, installing new sections of rail and related activity such as welding and grinding.

At approximately 12:03 a.m., there was a fire and loud noise that originated near heavy track equipment used to weld rail sections together into a continuous strip. Read More
