“Dear PoPville,

Looking for your favorite carrot cakes in the DC area? Personally, I’m partial to the Parkway Deli’s carrot cake, but as this is for my grandmother’s 87th birthday party next weekend I want to explore the full array of available options to make sure I chose something especially delicious. Thanks for your help!”

Today’s question comes from MR:

“please do a call for best bartender in DC my vote is for Alex at the oyster bar at Old Ebbitt Grill. Most seem to agree…the service is top notch. Full disclosure I have spent enough time and money at that bar to have put a down payment on a home in Capitol Hill.”

For me this is like asking who’s my favorite child. Your favorites?

“Dear PoPville,

I’m reaching out the Popville community to crowdsource recommendations for a breakfast spot. Here’s the criteria:

Open by 8:30 on a Saturday morning,
Full breakfast menu (think eggs, omelettes, pancakes, et cetera); not just pastry’s, sandwiches, or avant garde foods,
Reasonably priced ($15 per person not including tip); yes, we can afford more, but we’re really looking for a hole in the wall with solid food.

Places that we’ve been and mostly meet the above criteria: (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Can the community recommend places to walk or hike to enjoy fog? The places where it collects the most and lingers the longest? Does not need to be within city limits. I just love the mystery and magic of fog, plus I want to remind a dear friend of mine of the monsoon season hikes he used to take in his country of origin. (more…)

Yesterday the band Guster asked: “Three days in DC. Please to send all weird and wonderful food/coffee/exhibits/record stores/walks/architecture/etc recs this way.

I know there’s layers here, gotta peel the onion…”

I suggested Som Records, obviously, and speaking of onions, the French Onion Soup at Chez Billy Sud is so good. Anyway tons more recs were given. And it’s another reminder of what an amazing place we are lucky to call home. And the people, the people replied to Guster with gusto: (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I am a new DC resident interested in signing up for a marathon. I’ve heard from a colleague that the Rock n’ Roll marathon is a fun course, but it looks like it is only a half marathon now – not a full course (am I wrong about that)? I also heard the Marine Corps marathon is great, but I just missed it, and am hoping to run a race sooner than next October.

Does anyone have any race suggestions? I’d love to run a course that is more scenic, if possible.”
