“Dear PoPville,

There is metered parking outside my office (corner of 10th and G Streets, NW). It also falls in the variable rate parking zone that the city is experimenting with.

Two of the spaces (parkmobile zone 22651, spaces 0616 and 0617) are frequently given tickets (as in over 10 per day) and appear to be targeted by the parking enforcement employees.

The spaces have dual-zones: 2 hour parking and commercial zone parking within a subset of time. Difficult to quickly read the signs.

Basically, people think they can park there and when they go to the kiosk and enter the space number, it lets them pay for parking even though it is illegal for them to park there. Typically, the parkmobile app and kiosks will not allow you to pay for parking in a space when it is illegal to park there.

Just want to try to rectify it so folks don’t have their days ruined by getting a ticket!”

Ed. Note: A couple weeks ago we spoke about potential ATM fraud in Logan Circle.

“Dear PoPville,

Both my wife and I have had our Debit/Visa cards compromised in this week. The cards are linked to separate accounts, and the dodgy charges appeared on consecutive days.

My wife incurred two charges in Canada, and I incurred three: 2 in Canada (Mac’s Convenience Store, and Edinburgh Liquors) and one that I have not been able to trace successfully, but it is likely a Hookah store in Canada.

I have just been into our local branch of TD Bank (P street, NW) to get a new card and spoke with the Manager (who is consistently excellent). He told me that TD Bank has had no data breach, but said that he has had a number of customers from the area come into the Bank this week to dispute charges and obtain new cards. As a consequence he suspects there is a store, or stores, in the Columbia Heights/U Street area that has/have been skimming cards. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I’ve looked around the better known places (e.g., Lion’s, Calvert Woodley) for hard-to-find liqueurs. Turns out, the tiny corner store Irving Wine & Spirit in Mt. Pleasant has a much bigger selection than those other stores that are easily 5 times their size. They even have a website which I stumbled upon while searching for a terrific Amaro I tried at Maple. The staff has always been very friendly too. I’m hoping that more people start searching them out so as to encourage them to keep carrying such unique booze.”

“Dear PoPville,

Two weeks ago, I “ranted” about not getting my DC tax return despite having filed a month prior. A bunch of people replied saying they were having the same problem. Last week, I called the DC tax office and the customer service person told me that they needed a copy of my W-2. I asked him why I hadn’t received anything from the office indicating that they needed additional information from me, and he told me that DC doesn’t reach out to people unless the taxpayers owe DC money. In other words, if DC owes you a refund and needs additional documentation or information from you, they won’t reach out to you. You have to reach out to them. Glad I called and waited on hold for an hour to speak with this person because I sent him my W-2 and just received my return. Just wanted to pass on this FYI to anyone who hasn’t seen their tax return yet!”

Potential ATM fraud in Logan Circle

“Dear PoPville,

Thought your readers in the Logan Circle area may be interested in some apparent suspicious dealings involving the 7-Eleven ATM at 14 and Rhode Island NW.

I moved to DC a week or so ago AND have only used my debit card one place in DC – the ATM in 7-eleven at 14 and RI. Yesterday, someone used a cloned copy of my card at a td bank ATM in DC to steal $1100 from my account. Seems highly suspicious to say the least. If you use this ATM, I recommend being extra vigilant and maybe changing your PIN.”

It’s Time For a “friendly reminder to not leave ANYTHING of value exposed in your vehicle” even for a few minutes

Near the corner of Kansas Ave and Shepherd: My friend’s car was broken into Sunday night between 12:45-1:15 am as he was walking me to my door. Window smashed and contents stolen out of the car… Just a friendly neighbor reminder to not leave ANYTHING of value exposed in your vehicle, and make sure your car insurance covers such happenings.”
