The Bloomingdale Farmer’s Market is located at 1st and R Streets NW on Sundays from 10am to 2pm.

For the second year in a row, the Bloomingdale Farmer’s Market provided an awesome venue for Les Petits Chanteurs from Haiti. Usually my trips to the Sunday market are quick, but the singers and the accompanying pig roast provided good reason to hang around. This year, in addition to the choir, a group of drummers from Uruguay provided an energetic interlude.

Later in the evening, more roasted pig was consumed in honor of the belated one year anniversary celebration for the Big Bear Café, which is located adjacent to the Farmer’s Market.

Anyone else check them out?

There’s more than one Market in the East. On a recent Saturday afternoon, I ventured over to Florida Avenue to check out the Capital City Market. Roughly bounded by Florida Ave. NE on the South, 6th St. NE on the east, Penn St. NE on the north and the FL Ave. Metro on the west, the Market was originally located on the National Mall (somewhere near around Federal Triangle) and was relocated after World War I to make way for the Mall we’re all familiar with today. A few weeks ago I wrote about a couple of the grocery options in Mount Pleasant. I love that I live in a neighborhood that’s got some flavor and one where I have more options than Giant and Whole Foods. However, there has been more than one occasion when I was in need of some produce in a pinch and the selection at Bestway or International Progresso was looking a little less than fresh. That’s why I get a little giddy come spring when the Mount Pleasant Farmers’ Market opens up just a stone’s throw from home. May 3 was the first official day of the season and they’ll be open every Saturday right in the heart of Mount Pleasant (at 17th, Lamont and Mt. Pleasant Streets) from 9am -1pm until November 22.

I haven’t been to too many of the other area Farmers’ Markets, but I do like that this one is not only closer to home, but also that it seems to be a bit more intimate than the markets in Dupont Circle and Penn Quarter. It seems that the “neighborhood-y” vibe Mount Pleasant’s got going on spills over into the market as well. Everyone’s just happily milling about (sometimes to the sounds of live music), soaking up the sun, and checking out the goods. And goods there are!

The great thing about the Farmers’ Market is that it changes just a little each week. Through November there will be a revolving door of fresh seasonal items including apples, eggs, plants, organic meats, berries, squash, cider, baked goods, bread, honey, jams, tomatoes and much much more. This week I picked myself up a couple jars of preserves from Kathy Audia of Audia’s Farm in Howard County, MD. I’ve yet to tap into the Bumble-Berry, but the Persimmon-Peach was superb! Story continues after the jump with lots more photos. (more…)

A reader wants to know:

“How can we get a farmer’s market in Petworth?

Maybe it can be on Upshur St. near Domku. Any suggestions? Soon it will be Spring, and I would prefer not to trek to Dupont, U St. or Takoma for fresh vegetables. On a related matter, is there a group of folks in Petworth that grow vegetables and fruits in their yards? If so, it would be great to connect with everyone. I am just getting ready to get the soil tested and by the looks of it there is a lot of clay! It would be great to exchange tips of what grows well around here and learn from each other!”

Great news. I have been contacted by the woman behind the Bloomingdale, Mt. Pleasant and U Street farmers market. I’d like to plan on meeting with her sometime next week.

She wrote:

“I am the Director of the Mount Pleasant, 14 & U and
Bloomingdale Farmers’ Markets. I would be glad to come to a meeting
in Petworth and talk about how we started the farmers’ market in
Bloomingdale — and what it would take to start one in Petworth….”

So what do you think, do we want a Farmers Market in Petworth? Do we know why the efforts by the owner of Domku were unsuccessful? I remember signing a petition a while back. Should we involve Muriel Bowser in this effort? By the by, any opinion on how we think our Councilmember has represented so far? But most importantly are we going to make a real effort for a farmers market?

Holy cow is this awesome. I am so jealous. Yes it is small. But as a start, this market is fantastic. Why don’t we have one? Is Bloomingdale better than us? Better organized than us? Do we want our own farmers market or is the one on U Street close enough? I know the owner of Domku put out feelers a few months back about getting a Market in Petworth, so what ever happened with that? I am so jealous.
