Dear God was this good!!

From Manos de Maiz’s website:

“For us, corn is much more than just a commodity, for us it means family and tradition. At manos de maíz we source blue (conico) and white (bolita) heritage corn grown and harvested by Purepecha farmers. They have formed a network of 100 farmers whose families have worked the land for centuries and have passed their farming knowledge from one generation to another.

Taste tradition in a new way, try our maizope, a thick open faced tortilla made fresh by hand and served with our original recipes of seasonal toppings made with local ingredients. We have a rotating menu every week, please check our social media for updates.

BRISKET TINGA. Beef brisket, sweet chipotle, avocado, .
CHICKEN MOLE. Chicken breast, house almond mole, black beans, frisee.
BREAKFAST. Eggs, potato hash, green chili.
MUSHROOM. Wild mushrooms, charred poblano, crema.
CEVICHE. Tuna, lemon, habanero, corn, red onions.”

Their Facebook says:

“Making maizopes with Mexican heritage corn. Find us every Saturday at Mt Pleasant Farmers Market and Sunday at Eastern Market.

Ed. Note: I’m pretty sure I was at Eastern Market on a Saturday but I think they said they’ll be switching back to the regular Saturday in Mount Pleasant, Sunday in Eastern Market schedule soon. I plan on stalking them regularly so I’ll be sure to update.

From MPD:

“At approximately 8:45PM a citizen was operating a vehicle in the 900 block of G Street, NW, when several suspects approached the vehicle. The suspects pulled a handgun and demanded the vehicle. The suspects took the citizen’s vehicle and fled without harming the citizen. At approximately 9:10PM this same group attempted to carjack 2 other vehicles in the 900 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, SE. The suspects again displayed a weapon and attempted to take the vehicle however in both cases the citizens pulled away and fled without being harmed.

The four suspects involved in these robberies/carjackings were captured a short time later and placed under arrest.”

“Dear PoPville,

It is with great sadness that I received the news that the city plans to take over the Flea at Eastern Market that Mike Berman and Diverse Managements, LLC have spent years creating and running smoothly.

Mr. Berman and his team have put their hearts and souls into this weekly market. They’ve created an amazing weekly gathering of the city’s most vibrant, diverse, and talented vendors. They have survived many challenges in over 30 years to do this. All the while, Mr.Berman and his team have shown the utmost concern and fairness to all their vendors. Many years of honorable service and fairness are being ignored by the Department of General Services’ decision to terminate Mr.Berman’s contract.

In what way can the city justify suddenly seizing the creation and livelihood of Mr. Berman and the 15 people he currently employs?

They have been given notice that in two months, the City will be the running their section of the market. The members of Mr.Berman’s team have been involved with the market from the beginning. For many of them, it is their life’s work. For decades, the weekly market has been their livelihood. I’m sorry to overuse that word, but there is no other way to put it. These people have given so much to this market and now everything they have built is being taken from them. Imagine working somewhere for over 30 years and doing a great job at it and then suddenly being told that in two months, your position is being taken. Is this the way that the city wants to treat the people who have spent their lives creating the Flea at Eastern Market, an institution that does nothing but benefit the community (through incubating small businesses, bringing people together, supporting local farms and artists, outreach for the homeless, etc)?

Management of the 300 block of 7th Streetmay offer a slight revenue increase to the currently city run Eastern Market, but it is taking away an entire world for the hard-working people who have made this market what it is today.

The decision from the Department of General Services has come with no warning at all. Mr.Berman and his vendors have just survived an incredibly challenging displacement by the Hines School development project. Mr.Berman and his team were able to engineer the best layout and logistical strategy to protect and maintain the livelihood of the vendors that have been under his management for many years. This was not easy and now that the hard-work has been done, the city has announced its seizure.

At best, this is a very thoughtless and irresponsible move by the DGS. But to many, it feels much worse.

I do not believe that my city is this immoral.

Please help stop the DGS’s shortsighted action.”

From MPD:

“On today’s date (1-13-15) at around 4:55 PM, an individual riding his bike in the 700 block of 7th Street, Southeast, was approached by a suspect who stabbed him in the chest with an unknown object. The suspect then fled northbound on 8th Street, Southeast, with a group of juveniles.

The victim was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

This case is currently being investigated by the First District Detectives Unit.”

Thanks to a reader for sending the great new mural above:

“At the Eastern Market swimming pool. Looks AWESOME in person.”

From a press release:

“Mayor Vincent C. Gray kicked off the 2014 season of MuralsDC with a splash on Thursday, July 31, at the William Rumsey Aquatic Facility at 635 North Carolina Avenue, SE. The event featured a carnival-like atmosphere, made possible by Cirque du Soleil, which included acrobatic acts by the TSNY DC trapeze school, face painting, animal balloons, cotton candy, snow cones and music. More than 100 local children and adults attended the event to celebrate a new mural at the facility.

During the festivities, local artist Aniekan Udofia completed an original work of art on the entrance of the facility. The mural, which features a mermaid-like girl swimming in a sea of color, has already been received with great enthusiasm by the immediate community, say DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) officials.”
