“Dear PoPville,

In light of all the closings in DC, I haven’t been able to find much out about DC farmers markets, and especially the compost drop-off sites run by the DC government. I understand packed farmers markets aren’t the best idea during this time, but I hope the compost sites wouldn’t have to close too. Does anyone know the status of these services?”

From Freshfarm: “FRESHFARM is closely monitoring the COVID-19 outbreak as it continues to develop. At this time, markets will remain open in accordance with their usual schedule. However, we urge you to stay home if you are sick. If you attend the market, please prioritize essential food purchasing and do not use the market as a place for social gathering for the time being.” (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I work in a dental office where we work only inches away from a person mouth putting us at highest risk. Yet there has been no instruction on what dental offices should do other than a statement from the american dental association saying it recommends we should only do elective procedures. This would still be up the dentist’s discretion and I am afraid they won’t follow through. We don’t have the proper PPE to treat patients and it seems as though we have been forgotten about. Just thought it might be worth bringing to the public’s attention. I would just like to add that most dental offices don’t provide sick leave and we can’t telework so we wouldn’t get paid which is also an added stress that impacts the decision to stay open. It’s a difficult situation all around.”

Thanks to Aaron for sending: “Happy St Patrick’s Day from Elsa, Adams-Morgan”

Tonight I shall let the gin rest and pour a cup of Powers and toast to the sick to heal quickly, to the medical staff for being on the front lines, to the emergency responders keeping us safe, to the sanitation workers who always work through it all, to the grocery store and other retail workers keeping us stocked despite our fears, to our friends who’ve lost their jobs – letting them know they will not be forgotten and letting the powers that be know that they must be taken care of until we get back to normal, and to our family and loved ones may we all be safe and celebrate properly next year at the pub. Sláinte and L’Chaim! (more…)

Thanks to Leo for sending last night: “MPD guarding a delivery of supplies to CVS in Upper NW DC. At least three cops – sad reflection on how people are behaving. Looked like some prescription medications but mostly your standard CVS supplies from Motrin to soap to razors. People were patiently and politely waiting for the supplies to be unloaded/stocked, but I heard the delivery guy telling the cops that last time, people were grabbing goods straight from the truck.”

Thanks to all who sent the sad word. Many who reached out to me are upset about the way the news was delivered: “Compass Coffee, a DC based company just laid off 180 of their 200 employees abruptly with no compensation or support. Here’s the insufficient letter from the owner. It was heartbreaking for employees having worked there for years.”

Sadly similar lay offs have and will continue to occur throughout the industry. Please see the virtual tip jar for service industry workers. Hopefully baristas can be included too. And hopefully the District Council will provide support to the workers laid off as well. (more…)

A lot of folks have been asking me about the status of gyms since we learned restaurants and bars would close (with many transitioning to pick up/take out only.) ABRA sends some more guidance:

“Effective immediately, per Mayor’s Order 2020-048: Prohibition on Mass Gatherings During Public Health Emergency Coronavirus (COVID-19), all “mass gatherings” in DC are prohibited.

A mass gathering is considered any event or convening bringing together 50 or more persons at the same time in a single room or other single confined or enclosed space.

Accordingly, restaurants and taverns must cease table seating effective tonight, Monday, March 16, 2020 at 10:00 p.m. until Wednesday, April 1, 2020 at 6:00 a.m. These establishments may only provide delivery and grab-and-go operations during this period.

Additionally, all venues doing business as nightclubs, multipurpose facilities, health clubs, health spas, massage establishments, and theaters must also suspend operations. (more…)
