P & C Market is located at 1023 East Capitol St, SE. They even have a facebook page. I’m curious about this spot because a friend of mine said they have the absolute best bread/croissants in town. As you can tell I wandered around Capitol Hill this past weekend (thanks to Nichole’s desertion…) but if what I’m hearing is true, then this could be a great find to share. It’s easy to walk by this spot without noticing it as it’s in the basement of a corner rowhouse. Anyway, how’s the bread? The rest of the market?

Here’s what it looks like from the front, plus there is a flower shop behind it:

I got a ton of emails about this market opening up on Tuesday. If you recall this was the space that was gutted by fire in August ’08. It looks amazing now.

This is one of the nicest bodegas in town, well worth the wait. It’s not gonna replace a grocery store but if you need a few items and live nearby, you should be very happy.

It looks like the Longview Gallery, 1302 9th Street, NW, will be moving. Despite the sign, the gallery is currently still open. I ran into the owner who mentioned they were in the process of securing a new space. I’ll update that info as it becomes available.

And in bodega news it looks like the old Roosevelt Food Shoppe, 1418 12th Street, NW, is getting completely rehabbed. Looking in the window it seemed nearly completed. I’m not sure if it’s going to remain a bodega or turn into something else. As soon as it opens I’ll be sure to post photos of the new spot.

After yesterday’s post on the new Pho restaurant coming to Park Road I thought I’d stop by the Vietnamese market some folks referenced. Indeed they were super nice. And they said that the Pho restaurant will open up in 2 months. The market reminded me a bit of the new Japanese market that opened up at 17th and U. It’s a little gritty inside but it is has lots of interesting options. If anyone is interested in checking it out it’s just a few store fronts west of SimplySoles.

More photos after the jump. (more…)

Anyone who has taken a walk down Mount Pleasant Street will know that it is home to a number of bodegas, grocery stores and food marts. But, long before Mount Pleasant Street became the main thoroughfare of Samuel Brown’s Mount Pleasant Village a little market stood at the Corner of Brown and Newton Streets.

My knowledge of the history of this market is limited, but I do know that it’s been a mainstay in the neighborhood since 1906, and in the late 80s was taken over by its current owners, a local Korean family. Conveniently named, the Brown Street Market, and conveniently located for the residents of the northeast corner of the ‘hood it seems as this place is a local favorite.

It’s pretty tiny inside but they make good use of the space, packing every available shelf with groceries – mostly canned and dried goods, miscellaneous household supplies, and an impressive wine and beer selection for the space. I also spotted a random basket of potatoes and onions – but that’s about as far as the produce selection goes. Up front there are freezer cases of frozen meals and ice cream and an interesting selection of candy. And for a nice neighborhood-friendly touch, there are some photos of nearby residents displayed above the counter.

If you don’t live in Mount Pleasant I probably wouldn’t recommend leaving your own neighborhood to check this place out, but if you do live nearby it’s a good spot to pick up some necessities. I lived only a few blocks away for a whole year and only recently discovered this place. One more reason I love this neighborhood, there’s always a little gem hiding where you least expect it!

Thanks to a reader for sending:

“District of Columbia officials have identified their partners that will oversee a $5 million development project of vacant properties on Georgia Avenue in northwest Washington.

Mayor Adrian M. Fenty said Friday the city is working with Donatelli Development and Mosaic Urban Partners to create retail space and condominiums on the site of three properties, about a block north of the Georgia Avenue-Petworth Metro station.”

I think these are the vacant properties at 3813 and 3825 Georgia Avenue. So here’s some scuttlebutt that I heard. Now keep in mind these projects are not likely to be completed until 2010 but there are still some exciting possibilities that have already emerged.

There has already been interest expressed by the owners of Marvin’s as well as interest from a hardware store that will have a garden center and finally some interest from the owners of Jackie’s in Silver Spring. Pretty exciting possibilities but remember it’s still scuttlebutt at this point…

Now we don’t need to have a debate about more community centers here if you’d like you can re-read that debate. But as for the folks that have been mentioned, which would you rather see – a Marvin’s, Jackie’s or Hardware store with a garden center?
