YAPPY HOUR: It’s like the Bachelorette – except with puppies. At Wunder Garten’s Bachelorettes & Brews Yappy Hour, the single will mingle over drinks and appetizers while Lucky Dog Animal Rescue shows off some of its cuddliest pups. All the dogs are available for adoption, and ticket proceeds go to the rescue shelter. (Wunder Garten, 6 – 9 p.m., $28)

THE IDIOT New Yorker staff writer Elif Batuman will be at Kramerbooks to discuss her book, The Idiot (not the Dostoyevsky one). It follows the story of Selin, the daughter of Turkish immigrants, as she starts at Harvard in the middle of the 90s. It’s a coming-of-age novel that examines young adulthood with wit and a sharp eye. (Kramerbooks & Afterwords Cafe, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m., FREE)

VINO DINNER: Philip Mazzei was a close friend of Thomas Jefferson’s, and helped plant the first vineyards at Monticello. Tonight, discuss Mazzei with one of his direct descendants, Giovanni Mazzei, at a multi-course dinner in Plume’s private wine cellar. The dishes will be created by the restaurant’s chef, and each will be paired with a wine from the Mazzei estate in Tuscany. (Plume, 6:30 p.m., $175)

MORE: Smooth Whisky, Strong Women (The Watergate Hotel, 7 – 10 p.m., FREE), Art You Can Eat (Colada Shop, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m., $75), Washington Capitals v. Tampa Bay Lightning (Capital One Arena, 7 p.m., $22 – $371)

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 21

CO-WORK IT OUT: Co-working space MakeOffices is opening in The Wharf, and to celebrate, the spot is hosting a day of events with Brightest Young Things. Stop by for juice and coffee from JRINK before settling in for panels on opening a physical retail location, making a living as a creative, and social media marketing. In between, network and refresh with a happy hour and food from CAVA. (MakeOffice at The Wharf, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m., FREE, registration required)

PAST IN ART: Check out local artist Lisa Noble’s installation at a reception tonight. Hosted by Monochrome Collective, the artist presents a series of spaces mirrored after interiors from her past. It’s a reflection on the power of memory and its reinterpretation through art. (The Lemon Collective, 5 – 7:30 p.m., FREE) Read More

Thanks to all who messaged me about The Root’s Washington, DC’s El Centro D.F. Restaurant Removes ‘No Sneaker’ Policy, Fires Racist Bouncer After Black Man Is Denied Entry:

“Days after a black man, Brian Gordon, was denied entry to Richard Sandoval’s El Centro D.F. restaurant in Washington, D.C., because he was wearing sneakers, even though white patrons wearing sneakers were allowed entry, Ayyaz Rashid, managing partner of the Sandoval Restaurant Group, informed The Root that the bouncer who denied Gordon entry has been fired. In addition to firing the racist bouncer, the restaurant has removed its “no sneaker” policy.”

Read the full report here.

Ed. Note: We previously spoke about a similar dress code policy at another Richard Sandoval restaurant, Masa 14, back in March 2015.

“Dear PoPville,

Kind of a surreal moment – Masa 14 I guess is now a night club. I guess it’s been headed there a while. Door guy would not let me in because I’m wearing a tank top and shorts on a 90 degree day. But i guess that’s their policy now.”

Ed. Note: You can see a previous Masa 14 dress code controversy (and subsequent apology.)

Some very specific scuttlebutt about The Manhattan development. In addition to the WeWork space a reader says:

“A bit of scuttlebutt: the part of the building on the other side of the alley with the brick facade is going to house a few new restaurants. One is a German style pub that is being opened by Richard Sandoval Restaurants (El Centro, Masa 14). Another is a pizzeria and a third is a cafe (most likely Philz Coffee of San Francisco).”

Update from Masa 14:

“We apologize for the confusion around the dress code requirement at Masa 14. There has never been a required dress code for any meal service at our restaurant. This includes brunch and dinner. We welcome our guests to dress comfortably and any dress code requirements may only be applicable to our late night hours of operations.

Most importantly, the language used within the sign does not represent or reflect upon the restaurant’s principles. Please know that the sign has been removed, and we apologize about any unintended harm that this has caused. We are upset about this misrepresentation and would like to reiterate that we are committed to our values of inclusiveness. We have taken corrective action and we hold ourselves to a higher standard than what was represented in this sign.

At Masa 14 we value every guest, and will see to it that we continue to be a welcomed member in the community.”
