Thanks to AZ for sending us what has long been rumored but has finally been captured on film – the “U Street Hipster pheasant. Spotted outside of Velvet and El Rey.” The recent street chicken phenomena has reached a whole new level. Godspeed my sweet street birds!
Jacob reports this guy was spotted in the 700 block of Decatur St, NW Tuesday afternoon. Though a bit hard to tell in this photo, from the markings it appears this chicken runs with the same crew as the NPR Street Chicken. If you encounter a street chicken please email [email protected] immediately and whatever you do – do not lock eyes with the chicken.

“Yesterday [Sunday] in Tregaron Park, the grounds of the International School, along the fenced boarder of the back yards of the houses along Macomb St., the first block west of Connecticut Ave., a fox attacked my dogs as we were walking them along a trail. Then the fox turned on me! This is unusual behavior for a fox and indicates that it may be infected with rabies. I alerted animal control, and brought my dogs in for a rabies booster, but have not yet heard from them.”
Another reports:
“And I also saw a fox (there may be more than one) on Woodley Road and the corner of 36th about 10 days ago, plus our neighbor on Woodley (behind Tregaron) reported that her cats were bitten by a fox 2 days ago–which sounds like it might have been Saturday.”
and another:
“I saw the fox twice on Saturday, ranging in the backyards between Newark and Macomb Streets starting at the west end of Ross Place and going east about 6 houses. It was yipping and stood its ground rather than running when I appeared. This fox it isn’t just confined to Tregaron.”
Thanks to a friend of mine for sending from H Street, NE. She says there’s a dead pigeon and another dead big bird, guessing it might be an eagle since there are police involved and a crime scene.

My friend walked into Prego liquor store on 17th tonight and this happened….
She reports:
Nobody will ever believe this. I just went to the wine store and this critter was napping on the ATM. The owner was freaking out, totally scared and though it was a rat. The owner tried to hand me a pair of gloves and promised me a free bottle of wine if I’d chuck this thing out the front door. I couldn’t do it, but this other guy did. Funniest thing I have ever seen in my life. The owner of the store gave the Opossum Whisperer a six pack of Stella for his efforts!”
Far more terrifying than our new overlords in Shaw.

It is no secret that we at PoPville are quite fond of street chickens. So it was with great joy that I received the following email late yesterday afternoon:
“NPR found a chicken this morning. It is now sleeping quietly in the office of our former International Editor. It’s a hell of a story. If you’re interested, please follow up.”
Sweeter words were never read. So follow up I did. Following is the story of the NPR street chicken.

“I’m a science reporter here at NPR who runs a blog/youtube channel called Skunk Bear.
Yesterday, I glanced out the window and saw a decidedly fancy chicken strutting around on the grass in front of the DC Housing Department. It had attracted the attention of several NPR employees, including music librarian Robert Goldstein and the head of our health blog, Scott Hensley. I headed downstairs to get a closer look. A passerby (in pic 02, NY hat) was alternatively fascinated with and terrified of the bird. “What is that thing?” he asked repeatedly.
Foreign affairs correspondent Jackie Northam arrived on the scene expressing concern for the chicken’s safety. We bystanders resolved to catch the chicken and protect it from the morning North Capitol traffic. Ten embarrassing minutes later, I had grass stains on my knees and the chicken had given in to stereotypes and crossed the road.
Enter Jason Beaubien, chicken owner and neighborhood hero. Hardened by years of covering coup attempts in the Ivory Coast and Mexico’s drug war, Jason rallied us all to corner the chicken in a tuft of ornamental grass where he was finally able to grab it. The chicken sensed Jason’s quite power and calmed down immediately. It is now resting in the vacated office of our former international editor (now executive editor of news), Edith Chapin, inside a converted mail bin. (more…)
