“Dear PoPville,

Was wondering if you know anything about the caravan of muscle cars (I think Dodge Chargers?) with very accentuated mufflers that rev their engines and tear down U Street? They’re basically trying to have mini drag races block by block, it seems, and just spend hours rolling around NW doing it.”

Unclear if related but another reader sends the following regarding the photo above:

“Monday we saw 30 sports cars revving their engines down 4th Street NW to the 395 tunnel probably to street race.

Saturday night there was a red sports car that did rubber burning donuts at the 4th and L street intersection then another at 4th and I street intersection, almost losing control and crashing into some bike racks with a pedestrian walking on the sidewalk. (more…)

Thanks to Marshall for sending: “I was biking the C&O Bike trail today and I noticed a car in the channel near Chain Bridge Rd & Canal Rd NW. I was wondering if anyone knew how a car got into the C&O Canal in a weird location as it looked like it drove down the bike path then drove into the water.”

DC Fire & EMS reported last night: “Update Canal water rescue. All searches were negative. #DCsBravest have removed all personnel from the water. Turning the incident over to law enforcement.” (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Has anyone else noticed the return of ice cream trucks to empty streets? Weirdly, I’ve heard one playing “Deck the Halls” and other Christmas music. Very post apocalyptic.”

Other curiosities that fit the current bill: “Does anyone know anything about a man driving around in a blue 90’s/early 2000’s suburban style suv with a large antenna and broadcasting on a CB radio? He drives up 15th past Meridian Hill Park every few days and the stereo speakers in my apartment pick up his voice. He seems to be describing what he is seeing. Very weird.”

and of course:

“Crazy dude in truck heading east on Massachusetts Avenue with a megaphone saying wicked people are being punished…”

Thanks to the many, many readers who requested we take a closer look at this gem in the rear of 210 10th Street, SE:

“Can you please find out the story behind this amazing (time capsule? Cowboy theme?) house? I’ll cry if this is bought and then turned into a luxury condos.”

The Bright MLS listing says:

MGM , Disney, Gaudi and Newton (and Nicholas Cage would stall and wail at the style. Designed and Built by Charles Gessford in 21-Aug-1893, the building is a fortress. Car wheel bearings hold the 270 pound entry door. Synchronized bike bearings open the upper kitchen dining area. I(metal eye) beams provide the base for the stone staircase to the second floor. Survivalists could feel secure from most of the SWAT vehicles immediately available, it is a solid fortress. (more…)

17th and Corcoran Street, NW

“Dear PoPville,

Do you know why there have been two soldiers and DC police outside Safeway on 17th Street NW past couple of days?”

Ed. Note: We’ve noted a National Guard presence at some NPS run parks but this is the first report we’ve gotten from outside a business. I’m guessing they are just helping police enforce the ‘you must wear a mask’ before entering a grocery store rule. Anyone else see the National Guard posted at spots besides parks?

“Dear PoPville,

but every night between 9:30-10pm for the past couple of weeks, there is a bright white light in the sky over upper NW DC (likely near / above the National Cathedral). But it’s high up!!! So I’m not sure if it’s a helicopter… and then after a while, it’s gone! It’s definitely bigger and brighter than a star. What is it?!? Who’s watching us?!? PS: It stays stationary in the exact same spot for at least half hour… and then it quickly disappears!!!”

Ed. Note: I thought it might be the oft reported imaging balloon but we’ve never had a night reporting before. Any ideas?
