7th Annual Holiday Card Drive for the Old Soldiers Home/ Armed Forces Retirement Home!!

“Dear PoPville,

Its that time of year again! We are collecting handmade holiday cards for the residents of the Old Soldiers Home/ Armed Forces Retirement home here in DC. If you know an adult, office, child, daycare, or school that would be interested in making holiday cards to bring some joy to these individuals who have spent years or a lifetime in service to all of us, please spread the word and help us hand out a card to every retired soldier we can this holiday season. Last year we handed out over 700 hugely appreciated holiday cards from all over the country. The cards are delivered along with some hugs, singing and lots of holiday cheer. (more…)

Individuals, local businesses with community service programs, and community service groups are encouraged to volunteer. Donate Your Grocery Bags to Thrive DC who “distribute approximately 350 bags of food to low income adults and families each month”

“Dear PoPville,

I’m not sure how many of your readers have a million grocery bags (paper, plastic or reusable) cluttering their homes but Thrive DC (1525 Newton Street NW, basement of St Stephens Church) could really put them to use. Thrive DC distributes approximately 350 bags of food to low income adults and families each month and bags are an expense for them. Donating bags would be an easy way for people to de-clutter and help Thrive!”

“Rock Creek Conservancy, in partnership with the National Park Service, and Montgomery County Parks, part of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), is celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with their annual MLK Weekend of Service, a weekend full of events at 12 sites throughout the Rock Creek watershed. This multi-day volunteer event will address local environmental problems related to litter and invasive plant species while supporting a nationwide effort to empower individuals, strengthen communities, bridge barriers, and move us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community.”

Volunteers will participate in a variety of events designed to bring together local communities to protect and enhance the public lands that surround Rock Creek. Last year, the event mobilized 722 people who removed English ivy from 450 trees to protect Rock Creek’s tree canopy; removed invasive plants such as porcelainberry and wisteria to help native plants thrive; and cleaned up 390 bags of litter that had accumulated in and around Rock Creek and its tributaries.

This will be the fifth year that the Conservancy will host the weekend of service, which leverages the strength of local citizens to help tackle local problems and advance Dr. King’s dream of opportunity for all. (more…)

“Several homeless shelters need volunteers on Christmas Day”

“Dear PoPville,

I was wondering if you could ask the masses about volunteer opportunities around the area during the holidays? I checked Bread for the City, DC Central Kitchen, and Food & Friends and there doesn’t seem to be much available on Xmas eve or Xmas day but my family is looking for something to go over those days this year.”

I just got the following today but for those familiar with other options please let us know in the comments:

“Several homeless shelters need more volunteers on Christmas Day. Many social service agencies are short-staffed on December 25th and cannot provide festivities for people celebrating Christmas – so the Edlavitch DCJCC’s volunteers make a critical difference.

These service projects are part of the Edlavitch DCJCC’s 31st annual December 25th Day of Service (D25). As one of the largest Christmas service projects in the district, community members will volunteer at more than 50 social service agencies around Greater Washington including homeless shelters, nursing homes, hospitals, and mental health facilities. The EDCJCC is hoping over 1,000 people volunteer.
