“Several homeless shelters need volunteers on Christmas Day”

“Dear PoPville,

I was wondering if you could ask the masses about volunteer opportunities around the area during the holidays? I checked Bread for the City, DC Central Kitchen, and Food & Friends and there doesn’t seem to be much available on Xmas eve or Xmas day but my family is looking for something to go over those days this year.”

I just got the following today but for those familiar with other options please let us know in the comments:

“Several homeless shelters need more volunteers on Christmas Day. Many social service agencies are short-staffed on December 25th and cannot provide festivities for people celebrating Christmas – so the Edlavitch DCJCC’s volunteers make a critical difference.

These service projects are part of the Edlavitch DCJCC’s 31st annual December 25th Day of Service (D25). As one of the largest Christmas service projects in the district, community members will volunteer at more than 50 social service agencies around Greater Washington including homeless shelters, nursing homes, hospitals, and mental health facilities. The EDCJCC is hoping over 1,000 people volunteer.

See below for more information.

December 25th Day of Service is around the corner and we still need your help to bring companionship, gifts, and holiday cheer to dozens of people who are homeless around the metro-Washington area.

Access Housing, Inc. operates a 98-bed Transitional Living Center in Southeast DC for homeless male and female veterans of all wars and eras. Give back to those who have served our country. Volunteer at Access Housing, Inc. on December 25th.

Behrend Builders is working to clean and provide a fresh coat of paint at an emergency men’s shelter that offers men experiencing homelessness a hot dinner, access to case management staff, showers, and a bed on a nightly basis. Volunteer with Behrend Builders on December 25th.

Interfaith Works – Watkins Mill is a transitional housing program for eight homeless women with a mental health disability. The program provides case management, meals, transportation and referrals to permanent housing. Volunteer at Watkins Mill on December 25th.

Interested in a different project? Check out dozens of other volunteer opportunities available on Christmas Day!

We’re about a month out from summer. That means you’ve still got time for spring cleaning!

Lexi Grant, an operations manager at Well-Paid Maids, shared her go-to spring cleaning tips with WTOP News. Step one? Declutter. Get rid of items you don’t use, find space for items that need a home and organize those areas.

Then, it’s time to dust. Lexi starts with high-touch surface areas (think: refrigerator, dishwasher, counters, microwave). One area she sees often neglected is the bedroom — and it makes sense. Heavy furniture is difficult to move around, but it’s important to really get in there so dust doesn’t affect your sleep.
