For many of us, back-to-school time means shopping for school supplies for our children and enjoying the last days of summer. For scores of tutoring and mentoring organizations in the DMV, however, back to school means filling an urgent need to sign up and onboard hundreds of tutors and mentors to support underserved children and teenagers. With at least 2 out of 3 DC children reading below grade level, the need is great. The DC Tutoring & Mentoring Initiative (DCTMI) acts as a matchmaker, connecting volunteers with tutoring and mentoring organizations in DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia. (more…)

I’m a volunteer puppy raiser and the DC Group Leader for the Guide Dog Foundation and America’s VetDogs. GDF and AVD are the organizations behind Biscuit and Captain (the Capitals team dogs) and Sully (President George H.W. Bush’s service dog and the current Walter Reed facility dog). Our programs are currently facing an urgent need for volunteer puppy raisers in the coming months.
The Guide Dog Foundation and America’s VetDogs breed, raise, train, and place guide dogs for people who are blind or visually impaired and service dogs for veterans and first responders with disabilities, including PTSD. Volunteer puppy raisers are a vital part of each dog’s journey towards changing someone’s life, and we have an urgent need for more raisers in the next few months. (more…)

We did them late Monday night right before the box closed and got them just now!”

The Hill reported: “Biden, Harris, first lady Jill Biden and second gentleman Doug Emhoff visited D.C. Central Kitchen, which recycles food from local caterers, restaurants and hotels to provide meals for individuals who need them and for homeless shelters, after-school programs and rehabilitation clinics.”
