“DC Water reports a water outage in the area of U St NW between 17th St and Florida St NW affecting 40 homes. Estimated time of restoration is 10-12 hours. Please take all needed precautions.”

I was wondering if folks could help me out with a question I have. I was looking at long-term trends on my PEPCO bill to see what my household could be doing better and found this interesting pie chart in my account info.
Besides the obvious takeaway that we should turn down the heat on our house’s water heater, I was wondering what the heck the pool charges might be referring to. We live in a Columbia Heights row house. Definitely no pool that we know of. Anyone have any ideas so we can do better by the environment and for our bill? Thanks!”

“Pepco turning off electricity for customers around the Sherman and Irving area. Shutting off my whole building at 3101 Sherman. Heard other neighbors shut off as well.”
“Dear Popville,
Our meter box came loose from the wall and PEPCO issued our 3-unit building a 15-day notice to fix the box or they would shut off the electricity. Of course, PEPCO claims that the box and meters are the owner’s responsibility, not theirs. Yet they are charging us $2,251 to turn off the power so that our electrician can reaffix the box to the wall. Not to mention the $200 city inspector permit (also required by PEPCO), the several thousand dollars owed to the electrician for time and materials for waiting in line at the permit office, calling PEPCO dozens of times to arrange and schedule the outage and repairs, and doing the actual rescrewing of the box to the wall.
Has this happened to anyone else? Do we have any recourse with PEPCO? These fees are obscene! The repair was originally quoted for $200 and, due to PEPCO, this project is going to cost us nearly $5,000!”

“Pepco reports scattered power outages throughout the District of Columbia impacting approximately 10000 customers, in conjunction with severe weather activity. Estimated time of restoration is unknown.”

“Pepco is monitoring the path of Tropical Storm Hermine and taking steps to prepare in case the anticipated heavy rain and strong winds cause service interruptions.
If the storm gains in strength, it could damage the electric system and cause power outages. If outages occur, Pepco will work around the clock to restore power, though as always restoration will not begin until it is safe for crews to perform work. When winds exceed 35 mph, work from bucket trucks is suspended until it is safe for crews to continue.
In addition to 150 internal linemen, Pepco has an additional 250 overhead line contractors and 180 tree crew personnel as well as crews from its sister utilities Atlantic City Electric and Delmarva Power available to assist in any restoration effort. Should Pepco need extra assistance, the merger with Exelon allows for shared resources from other nearby companies in the Exelon family, including Baltimore Gas & Electric and PECO in Philadelphia. FYI for renters with Pepco:
My roommate and I have had a problem with our Pepco bill being ridiculously high since we moved into our 2 bedroom 1,100 sq ft apartment in November. We moved from a 2,600 sq ft house with 5 people and 4 floors, and have been paying as much and sometimes more in our tiny place every single month. My roommate and I are rarely home on the weekends, turn off all our lights during the day, and sometimes are gone for weeks at a time, and our Pepco bill was continuing to rise. We even decided to turn our thermostat to “off” one month and sweated every night trying to lower the bill, and the bill went UP the next month. We also noticed we had an uncategorized amount charged on our bill each month called “Other” that didn’t fit into our energy usage categories. Three separate Pepco customer service agents were not able to tell us what this “other” category was and why we were paying $50+ a month for this uncategorized area. (more…)
