“Homeboy, do you know what it means to be kicked out of your country and not be able to go back? That shit is serious, cuz, and sits with me every day.
“In Ethiopia, I was someone. I was a graduate in the school of agriculture. I went to go work as a coffee inspector and then got a job as a reporter for the Ethiopian Herald. I was one of the best writers in all of Ethiopia. I covered all of the important topics. I am telling you the truth, homie. But in Ethiopia, the government did not like that I was running my mouth and writing certain things, so I had to flee from my home and leave everything behind. That was 33 years ago.

“For me, the only way to eat corned beef is on rye bread with mustard. Maybe put coleslaw or Russian dressing, but that is already pushing it. Now, the shvartzes will walk in here and ask for corned beef with bacon, lettuce, tomato, swiss cheese, and mayonaise on white bread. It don’t make no sense to me, but I make it.
“I got my first job working in a Jewish deli 37 years ago. I was 16 when I moved to D.C. from Saint Mary’s County, Maryland. We were 21 kids and I am the oldest girl. My Mom was 15 when she had her first and 42 when she had her last. I moved out because my parents were alcoholics and I couldn’t live with my family anymore. I had an aunt in D.C. who let me stay with her while I tried to get on my feet.
“The first job I applied for was at the Baltimore Delicatessen on Bladensburg Road. There were two Jewish guys working there and I asked if they were hiring. It was 8:30 in the morning and they told me to start that minute. I came from the country and knew nothing about no Jewish or corned beef and gefilte fish. On my first day, I messed up everything. At the end of the day, they said, ‘You don’t know nothing from nothing, so we are going to have to teach you everything.’

“Dear PoP,
I’m sure you’ve heard by now about the hit and run accident that occurred on Friday night at 13th & Quincy, NW involving a motorcyclist. Well, that motorcyclist is a good friend of mine and he is in serious condition in the ICU and has been undergoing a series of intense surgeries to repair the damage caused by the accident.
Any information you can gather on the accident would be helpful. I noticed that there were a few posts on your article on hit & runs that mentioned this specific accident. Please encourage people to come forward and talk to the police. Todd, the motorcyclist, and his wife have lived in Columbia Heights since 2000, and this accident occurred two blocks from their home.”
If anyone has information please contact the police or you can email me directly at princeofpetworth(@)gmail.com
The HCB exhibit at MOMA in NYC ended on June 28th. Did you make it?

I’ve been following with interest and disgust a series of emails about incidents near the Eastern Market metro. Many of the emails recount stories like this:
“My family (4 and 2 year olds) also was closely followed and verbally assaulted by this guy last month when crossing the street in front of the EM metro. I was totally flustered by the encounter, even with my husband present. I felt awful about the incident, namely because in rushing to get away from him and across Penn Ave, I basically led my 4 year old into traffic. While the man seems mentally ill, he has his wits enough about him to repeatedly target/assault families with small children in tow.”
I also wanted to share the wise advice given by another poster:
“I was taught if someone is following you on foot or even in your car, DO NOT GO HOME, go to the closest business and call the police.”
