Alexis Diao tweets us a situation we’ve touched on from time to time:
“The limb from an enormous tree next door in Columbia heights straight up fell across our yard and the next door yard. Thankfully no one was hurt. So crazy. my neighbor was standing right under it 20 seconds earlier. There’s damage to my car, flattened the recycling bins like a pancake, broke the fence. I feel really lucky actually bc it could’ve been much much worse. This tree is beautiful and big, but clearly has been dying for some time. We’ve actually had an arborist come out 3 times over 3 years bc we have been concerned about it. They said this tree is an accident waiting to happen. But the owner’s done nothing since we sent our reports. (more…)

James sends the frustrating photo: “Anyone else experienced stolen plants from their yards in Petworth-ish area? Someone dug up and stole my parents’ Japanese maple last night.”

On Monday we reported that Gingko tree spraying would begin overnight “to reduce the formation of mature ginkgo fruit, which emits an offensive smell when it falls on sidewalks and roadways.”
Pretty wild sight if you’re not expecting it: (more…)

From DDOT:
“The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will begin the annual spraying of the female ginkgo street trees on April 20, 2020. The spraying will occur overnight from 9:00 p.m. through 6:00 a.m., weather permitting.
The annual spraying serves to reduce the formation of mature ginkgo fruit, which emits an offensive smell when it falls on sidewalks and roadways. DDOT will use the same spray it has used for the past 20 years, Shield-3EC 24(C). (more…)

Ken writes yesterday: “they CUT DOWN ALL THE TREES at Pershing Park to “build” the National World War I memorial. It was once one of the prettiest monuments/parks in the city. Now it’s torn up to be “renovated” by WW1 Centennial.”
