A reader asks:

“I’m living out of the US at the moment, and was planning a trip back to Washington. I noticed on this Dulles Airport page with “Estimated Taxi Fares” (of course, pretty much locked in with Washington Flyer), that the estimated cost from Dulles Airport to Rosslyn is $28.00 for 25 Miles. However, cross the bridge into DC (26-28 Miles) and the cost for Dulles-DC is suddenly estimated at $60.00-$64.00. Same thing for Dulles to Pentagon City (26 Miles, estimated cost is suddenly $64.00).
See for yourself.

I was just a bit astounded by this…. It’s a bit over the top.

I’m a bit flummoxed… is there some sort of tax or surcharge to these places? Just a truly wild disparity.”

From WMATA:

“Metro is preparing for large crowds and extensive traffic detours during Pope Francis’ three-day visit to Washington, D.C. Tuesday, September 22, through Thursday, September 24.

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to attend events during the Papal visit, which will likely result in crowding and delays on trains and buses, and could produce near Inauguration ridership levels at selected stations.

While many regular commuters are expected—and encouraged—to adjust their work schedules or take advantage of telecommuting, Metro will take steps to provide additional train service during non-peak hours Wednesday and Thursday during the Papal visit. (Metro does not have the ability to add significant capacity during the traditional morning and evening rush hours.)

Riders should expect significant crowding aboard trains and at rail stations near Papal events. (more…)

parking cycle track

“Dear PoPville,

I dodged this amazing parking job this afternoon on 15th St just south of K St NW. More off-pissing than anything else was the fact that the legal parking on the correct side of the barriers, along the entire block, was completely unoccupied. When DC parking enforcement seems to issue no tickets on Sundays, I guess this is inevitable. Of note: this is the first time I’ve seen this particular move by a car that didn’t have Maryland plates, but that doesn’t really feel like cause for celebration.”

I agree it’s annoying as hell but is it possible they were confused by the parking meters? Why are there even parking meters next to the cycle track, a vestige before it went in?

trolley

Streetcars may not be carrying passengers (yet?) but its saga remains hilarious. Ed. Note: Living in the District we often encounter scenarios where we can either laugh or cry – your choice. Thanks to a reader for sending the photo above last night:

“They’re destroying this trolley stop at H and 5th. Not sure what that means but it didn’t look good.”
