“Dear PoPville,

I am a cofounder of an organization called Fuel the People which raises money to feed protestors through partnerships with local Black & POC-owned restaurants. Our mission is to nourish protestors while also supporting and uplifting local businesses. Since we started in June, we’ve fed over 16,000 protestors in DC & NY. We’re currently raising money to support protests commemorating the March on Washington throughout the upcoming weekend in DC, and would greatly appreciate it if you could share our GoFundMe.”

The Post reports:

“A civil rights rally timed to the 57th anniversary of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s seminal “I Have a Dream” speech, delivered in 1963 from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, is expected to bring thousands to the same spot on Friday.

Headlined by the Rev. Al Sharpton, who will be joined by King’s eldest son, Martin Luther King III, and family members of several men and women who were killed by law enforcement officers, the demonstration will conclude a week of large-scale events in the nation’s capital, including days of protests and a fireworks display over the Washington Monument to mark the end of the Republican National Convention.”

From MPD:

“The Metropolitan Police Department would like to announce on Friday, August 28, 2020, the Commitment March: “Get Your Knee Off Our Necks,” along with other First Amendment demonstrations, will take place in the District of Columbia. “Dear PoPville,

Saturday I was walking my dog down Rock Creek through the tunnel. There are signs to dismount your bike through the tunnel on both sides. Two guys were going full speed on the narrow sidewalk. When one of them passed me, I told him he’s supposed to get off his bike. The next guy stopped and let me pass and I told him the same. The first guy then got off his bike, threw it to the ground, and started walking toward me aggressively as though he was going to physically assault me. His friend had to hold him back. I wish I had taken a picture of the guy. I can’t believe anyone would get so angry that they would respond physically to someone pointing out the rules. It’s really dangerous for people to ride their bikes through that tunnel when it’s busy with people and responding with aggression is not appropriate.”

From WMATA:

“More trains, more stations, more buses, more hours. Metro is finalizing plans to restore most rail and bus service to pre-Covid levels across the region in the largest – and likely most complex – service change in the system’s 44-year history. To support the effort, thousands of frontline Metro employees will transition to new work schedules as the region continues its gradual recovery and more customers are expected.

“Thanks to our congressional delegation, CARES federal funding makes it possible for us to restore service in support of economic recovery for the national capital region,” said General Manager and CEO Paul J. Wiedefeld. “As they return, we want our customers to know that facial coverings are required everywhere on the system, and the more frequent trains and buses we are adding will help you ride socially distant.”

Metrorail service changes take effect Sunday, August 16, (more…)

Car Free Lanes are part of DDOT’s Bus Priority Program, the Bowser Administration’s initiative to enhance bus service across all eight wards of the District.
