As part of DC govt/DDOT’s initiative to create more recreational space to socially distance and make neighborhood streets safer by reducing the speed limit, “slow streets” barriers were put up. I live at North Capitol and Van Buren Sts NW and can confirm that this isn’t changing how drivers behave or get to their destinations. (more…)

Saturday I was walking my dog down Rock Creek through the tunnel. There are signs to dismount your bike through the tunnel on both sides. Two guys were going full speed on the narrow sidewalk. When one of them passed me, I told him he’s supposed to get off his bike. The next guy stopped and let me pass and I told him the same. The first guy then got off his bike, threw it to the ground, and started walking toward me aggressively as though he was going to physically assault me. His friend had to hold him back. I wish I had taken a picture of the guy. I can’t believe anyone would get so angry that they would respond physically to someone pointing out the rules. It’s really dangerous for people to ride their bikes through that tunnel when it’s busy with people and responding with aggression is not appropriate.”

Metro is finalizing plans to restore most rail and bus service to pre-Covid levels across the region in the largest – and likely most complex – service change in the system’s 44-year history. To support the effort, thousands of frontline Metro employees will transition to new work schedules as the region continues its gradual recovery and more customers are expected.
“Thanks to our congressional delegation, CARES federal funding makes it possible for us to restore service in support of economic recovery for the national capital region,” said General Manager and CEO Paul J. Wiedefeld. “As they return, we want our customers to know that facial coverings are required everywhere on the system, and the more frequent trains and buses we are adding will help you ride socially distant.”

“Today, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announced that construction of Car Free Lanes on 7th Street NW and M Street SE will begin on August 17, weather permitting. The work is part of a year-long project to improve bus performance and safety throughout the District.
“We are advancing the Bowser Administration’s commitment to bolstering bus service in our city,” said DDOT Director Jeff Marootian. “These Car Free Lanes will not only increase bus travel speeds and reliability but will also help reinvigorate business and commuter activity in the downtown area.”
Car Free Lanes are part of DDOT’s Bus Priority Program, the Bowser Administration’s initiative to enhance bus service across all eight wards of the District.

DC Fire & EMS reported at 10:30am: “Crash with vehicle overturned Michigan Ave & N. Capitol St. #DCsBravest on scene with 2 vehicles involved. No entrapment. Any injuries appear minor.”
