“Dear PoPville,

Now that jobs are slowly requiring people to come back in, I really do not want to get back on the Metro. Do any Petworth residence have any thoughts advice or suggestions on taking one of the electric scooter Services downtown and home everyday? (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Was wondering if you’ve heard any sort of update on the slow street project? I know it was supposed to end “in May”, but June has come and all of the signs are still up on all of the streets.”

Readers reported: “Sounded like two jets flew extremely low above houses last night around 11:45. Heard in Woodridge, NE, and apparently out into Hyattsville. It was almost unbearably loud, and I’m not particularly noise sensitive.”

“So I woke up to an extremely loud noise – and my neighborhood listserv starts popping off a few minutes later. Apparently we had two fighter jets just fly over #Hyattsville?”

“It was crazy loud in Riverdale.”

“Anyone else in DC area hear an incredibly loud/close aircraft fly by (sounded almost like a missile) just now? What was that?? (NE in Hyattsville).”

From the Mayor’s Office:

“Mayor Muriel Bowser and the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announced plans for a new two-way cycle track on the east side of 9th Street NW, adding a 1.6 mile protected bike lane connecting Florida Avenue/U Street NW to the north and Pennsylvania Avenue to the south.

“This project will make our city safer and travel Downtown more accessible,” said Mayor Bowser. “With the 9th Street cycle track we are improving DC’s infrastructure to make it safer, more sustainable, and more efficient for everyone who travels through this corridor.”

A new 9th Street NW protected bike lane will significantly expand safe bicycling infrastructure on the eastern side of downtown. Ten percent of all trips originating in the Shaw neighborhood are by bicycle, more than double the average bike trips District-wide. The bike lane will provide a critical north-south connection for cyclists to downtown, in an area that does not currently have any designated bike lanes. (more…)

From the office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton:

“Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) sent a letter requesting that the National Park Service permanently close to motor vehicles the portion of Beach Drive NW in the District of Columbia that has been closed to motor vehicles during the coronavirus pandemic. The portion has been closed during the pandemic to provide more space for pedestrians, bicyclists and recreation. Thousands of people now use Beach Drive to walk, run, bike and play.

“As we shift to post-pandemic life, there is much we have learned about our values as a community,” Norton said. “One of those lessons is the benefit of spending time outdoors. We want to take advantage of the opportunity the temporary closure of Beach Drive provided to prioritize health, outdoor recreation and other forms of transportation by making the closure permanent.”

The letter follows. (more…)
